A suite may open and save these formats yet still alter a layout, formula, chart, embedded object, or macro-dependent workflow. If your work relies on Microsoft Office-specific features, start with the relevant Microsoft desktop app; if browser access or a different desktop suite matters more, test representative files through the exact workflow you plan to use.
What DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX support does—and does not—tell you
DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX belong to Microsoft’s Office Open XML format family. Microsoft identifies these as the default formats for supported Office versions and recommends them unless there is a specific reason to use another format. That makes them a sensible interchange choice when collaborators expect Microsoft Office files. Microsoft’s file-format guidance explains the recommendation.

But the extension is not a promise that every application will preserve every feature. Microsoft notes that an application may read only part of a file and that converting or saving in another format can change formatting, data, or features. A document that opens successfully can still have altered page breaks; a workbook can render differently or lose behavior; a presentation can shift media or slide elements.
LibreOffice’s format documentation says Writer, Calc, and Impress open and save Microsoft Office formats, including DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. Treat that as support for working with those file types, not as evidence that every file will render identically in every application.

Compare suites against your actual workflow
There is no single compatibility label that answers whether a suite is right for your files. Compare the options on four practical dimensions: how faithfully your important files round-trip, whether you depend on features such as VBA macros, whether you need desktop or browser work, and whether the available license fits your needs. The official documentation establishes format support and some feature limits, but it is not a controlled head-to-head test of every suite against every file.
| Option | Consider it when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Office desktop apps | Your collaborators use Office files or your work depends on Office-specific behavior. | Check that the particular desktop product and license you plan to use include the features your files require. Open XML is Microsoft’s recommended default format, but that alone does not prove every file or feature will behave as expected. |
| LibreOffice desktop | You want a desktop alternative that can open and save DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files. | Test formatting, formulas, charts, embedded content, and any macro-dependent workflow. LibreOffice documents macro differences and says its applications and Microsoft Office generally cannot run the same macro code. |
| Office for the web | You need to view or edit Office files in a browser. | Confirm the specific file type, account, and license support the view or edit action you need. Microsoft says macros cannot be run or changed in Office for the web. |
| Google Workspace | Cloud collaboration is a priority and you are prepared to test your Office files in the intended workflow. | Verify your own files rather than assuming detailed DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX compatibility. The available evidence here does not establish file-specific compatibility behavior for Google Workspace. |

How to test a suite before switching
Use files that represent the work you need to do, including the most complex examples. This is a practical way to uncover the format changes Microsoft warns may occur; it is a recommended test process, not a claim that a comparative test has been conducted.
- Inventory your work. Note how many files are documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Mark any that use macros, complex formatting, charts, embedded media or objects, or external links. Identify which applications your recipients use.
- Choose representative files and keep originals. Select a small sample that includes ordinary files and the hardest cases. Make copies so the originals remain untouched.
- Open and edit the copies in the candidate suite. Use the actual features you rely on rather than stopping at a successful open.
- Save in the format your collaborators use. Save as DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX where appropriate, then reopen the saved copy in the recipient’s application.
- Inspect the result closely. Check document page breaks, fonts, and layout; spreadsheet formulas and charts; presentation slide positioning and media; and any macro-dependent process.
- Repeat in the intended edition and account. Test the actual desktop app or browser service and the account or license you expect to use. A browser workflow may not offer the same features as a desktop one.
- Choose the least-friction option that passes. Balance the file test with collaboration and licensing needs. If a feature is essential, treat failure on that feature as a reason not to switch until you find a workable alternative.
How to make the decision
Choose Microsoft Office desktop when compatibility risk is costly
If a workflow depends on Office-specific functions, complex files, or VBA macros, Microsoft’s desktop apps are the most sensible starting point. That is a risk-management choice, not a guarantee that every file will be flawless or that every Office license includes identical features; check the actual product and test the files.

- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.

Choose LibreOffice when desktop flexibility matters and testing passes
LibreOffice can open and save the three formats, and its help describes how to configure Microsoft-format saving. It may suit straightforward documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, but macro code should be treated as a separate compatibility problem rather than assumed to transfer as executable behavior.
Choose a browser-first workflow when access and collaboration lead
Office for the web is worth considering when browser-based viewing or editing fits the job, subject to its file and license conditions. Google Workspace may also be a candidate when cloud collaboration is the priority, but test your own Office files before relying on it for faithful round-tripping.

Common compatibility questions to settle before committing
- Will a suite open these extensions? LibreOffice documents that Writer, Calc, and Impress open and save DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. That answers basic format support, not whether your most complex files will survive editing unchanged.
- Will my formatting change? It can. Compare the saved file in the recipient’s application, especially if page layout, fonts, charts, or slide positions matter.
- Can I use Excel macros in another suite? Do not assume so. LibreOffice says Microsoft Office and LibreOffice generally cannot run the same macro code. Office for the web cannot run or change macros.
- Is browser editing equivalent to desktop editing? Not necessarily. Confirm view/edit availability for the intended file, account, and license, and test the required features in that browser workflow.
