Riot Games says on its official MMO recruiting page that it is working on an MMORPG based in the League universe. The official material checked for this guide does not give a release date. Riot’s January 22, 2024 update said the project’s direction was being reset and warned that it would not be coming soon. That is useful context for why the wait could be long, but it is a dated statement—not a current launch estimate.

Compare the full cost, not just the entry price
A free download does not necessarily mean every activity is free or that the game has no optional spending. Compare the starting access, required recurring charges, paid expansions or upgrades, and optional in-game purchases as separate parts of the payment model.

Guild Wars 2 Support says the core game is free and that players can buy upgrades and expansions as they progress. Check whether the commitment fits your life
For a game you may play while waiting, the best fit may be one you can pause and return to rather than one that demands a fixed schedule. Consider how long your usual sessions are, whether progression remains satisfying in short visits, and whether group activities require regular coordination. Also decide whether you want a temporary change of genre or specifically want another game set in the League universe; an MMO in a different setting is not automatically a substitute for League lore.
