How to Choose an Indoor Security Camera for Your Home

Compare an indoor camera’s purpose, recording options, ongoing costs, room fit, and privacy protections before choosing a model.

Choose an indoor security camera by deciding what you need to monitor, where recordings should be stored, and how much privacy and ongoing cost you are willing to accept. Then check the exact model’s room fit, alert features, storage compatibility, and security controls before buying.

Start with what you want the camera to do

A camera for checking whether a pet is on the sofa has different priorities from one meant to watch a room or an entry point. List the tasks you expect it to handle, then compare models against those needs rather than counting features.

  • Live viewing: Useful when you mainly want to check a room from your phone. Confirm that the app supports remote viewing and that you can disable remote access if you do not need it.
  • Saved recordings: Necessary if you want to review what happened while you were away. Check where recordings are stored, how long they remain available, and whether saving them requires a paid plan.
  • Motion alerts: Find out what triggers an alert and whether the camera distinguishes people, pets, or other motion. Some intelligent alerts may depend on cloud processing or a subscription; availability varies by model and plan.
  • Two-way audio: Consider it if you want to speak through the camera, for example to reassure a pet. Check whether the feature is available in the app and whether it depends on a plan.
  • Smart-home integration: Verify compatibility with the specific platform and devices you already use. Do not assume a camera works with a particular assistant or automation just because it has an app.

Choose where recordings will be stored

Storage affects both recurring cost and control over footage. Local storage, such as a microSD card or a hub in your home, can avoid a cloud-recording fee. Cloud storage keeps recordings with a provider and can preserve them away from the camera, but adds a recurring cost and means footage is handled by that provider. Compare the exact model’s storage options and current plan terms before deciding.

Storage option Potential advantage Trade-off to check
Camera microSD card Recordings stay on a card in the home, and a separate cloud-storage plan may not be needed. The card can be lost if the camera is taken. Confirm supported card type and capacity; some camera features or recording modes may have additional requirements.
Local hub or recorder Footage can be stored on a separate device in the home rather than in a provider’s cloud. Check whether the camera requires a particular hub, what it costs, and whether the hub’s location and capacity suit your setup.
Provider cloud Footage is stored away from the camera and may remain available if the camera is damaged or removed. Check recurring fees, recording limits, retention periods, and whether the features you want require a subscription.

For a concrete example, Consumer Reports says the Reolink E1 Pro supports microSD cards up to 512 GB and that the card is not included. That is a model-specific specification, not a general recommendation for card capacity; verify the manufacturer’s current compatibility details before purchasing a card. Consumer Reports’ no-subscription camera guide was updated August 10, 2026.

Tapo 1080P Indoor Security Camera, Baby Monitor, Dog Camera, Wired, C100 | Motion Detection, 2-Way Audio, Siren, Night Vision, Cloud & SD Card Storage, Works w/Alexa & Google Home
  • ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
  • EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
  • PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
  • VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
  • FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.

Calculate the total cost, not just the camera price

Compare the purchase price with any required card or hub and the cost of plans over the time you expect to use the camera. A camera advertised with motion detection or smart alerts may not include every alert type or recording feature without a subscription. Check the current terms for the exact model and region; features and plan rules can change.

Consumer Reports’ buying guide discusses local and cloud storage, subscriptions, and detection features, but prices and plan details are not fixed across models or time. Review the manufacturer’s current product and plan pages before purchase. Consumer Reports’ home security camera buying guide was updated February 17, 2026.

Make privacy and account security part of the choice

An indoor camera may capture private spaces, so assess how its account, live stream, and stored footage are protected. The Federal Trade Commission recommends researching whether a camera encrypts account information, livestreams, and archived video. Also check for available two-factor authentication, remote-viewing controls, software updates, and clear information about how the provider handles footage. The FTC’s camera security guidance was published in February 2023.

The FTC advises: “Consider putting your cameras on a separate network from other devices, like your computer or printer.” A separate network can help isolate cameras from other home devices. The FTC also recommends strong, unique passwords, available two-factor authentication, current camera and app software, and attention to router security. Its guidance on connected devices also notes the value of reviewing IP-camera access logs when available. See the FTC’s guidance on securing internet-connected devices at home, published in August 2022.

Think carefully about camera placement, especially in bedrooms or other private areas. Choose a model and account setup that let you limit who can view footage, and disable remote viewing if you do not need it.

Use this checklist before buying

  1. Write down whether you need live viewing, saved clips, motion alerts, two-way audio, or smart-home integration.
  2. Decide whether you prefer local recording, cloud recording, or a combination, and check the consequences of each for access and footage retention.
  3. Confirm which desired features are included without a subscription and read the current plan terms for the exact model.
  4. Check room-specific fit: field of view, night visibility, mounting, power, privacy controls, and app compatibility.
  5. If using a microSD card, verify the supported card type and maximum capacity for that camera. Do not infer compatibility from another model’s specifications.
  6. Review encryption, two-factor authentication, remote-access controls, update support, and the provider’s footage-handling information.
  7. Secure the account and home network with a unique password, available two-factor authentication, up-to-date software, and a well-secured router.
