Choose an external SSD by matching its capacity to your files and games, its USB interface to the port you will use, and its compatibility to the computer or console you own. For important backups, plan on keeping another copy elsewhere: an SSD is useful storage, but it is not a complete backup strategy.
Start with what you will store
Estimate how much space your current files and game library use, then leave room for growth. There is no single capacity that suits every workload. For example, Samsung lists its T7, T7 Shield, and T9 in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, while its T5 EVO comes in 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB. SanDisk lists its Extreme Portable SSD in capacities from 500GB through 4TB.

Check the exact capacity of the model and region you are considering rather than assuming every drive in a product family has the same options. Manufacturer capacity listings are available in Samsung’s portable SSD buying guide and the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD product page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMatch the USB interface to your device
A faster SSD can only deliver its full interface benefit when the host device and connection support it. Samsung lists USB 3.2 Gen 2, with bandwidth of 10 Gbps, for the T7 and T7 Shield; it lists USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, at 20 Gbps, for the T9. Check the specification for the computer or console port you will actually use before paying more for a higher-bandwidth drive. Samsung’s portable SSD comparison lists these interfaces.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Interface bandwidth is not the same as a guaranteed file-copy rate. Advertised maximum read and write speeds are manufacturer specifications, not promises for every device or task. Backup software, file sizes, the host port, cable, and other conditions can affect actual transfers; the cited product pages do not establish independent real-world benchmark results.
Check compatibility for the specific computer or console
Before buying, verify the intended device’s supported connection, operating system or console rules, formatting requirements, and any cable requirements. Broad compatibility claims do not mean every game can run from an external SSD on every platform.

For computers and general storage
Samsung lists the T7 Shield as compatible with PCs, Macs, Android devices, and gaming consoles. SanDisk lists USB-C device and operating-system compatibility for the Extreme Portable SSD. Confirm the exact setup against the Samsung T7 Shield support page or the relevant SanDisk product listing, including whether you need a different cable or drive format.
For console game libraries
Samsung says the T7 Shield is compatible with gaming consoles, but that statement does not define which games each console can run from external storage. SanDisk’s PlayStation-licensed drive page gives more specific PS5 guidance: it can store PS5 games for later transfer to the console’s internal storage, and it describes direct play for PlayStation PC games from a PC. Those statements should not be generalized to other consoles or game types. Check the current rules for your platform and the specific games you want to use. See the Samsung compatibility information and SanDisk’s PlayStation SSD page.

Compare durability and warranty separately
A protective enclosure may suit a drive that travels, but ratings and warranty terms answer different questions. IP65 describes dust and water resistance under the rating’s test conditions; it does not make a drive indestructible or protect data from every accident. A warranty is subject to its terms and is not a substitute for keeping another copy of important files.
| Example drive | Manufacturer-stated protection | Warranty stated on cited page |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield | IP65 dust and water resistance | Limited three-year warranty on Samsung’s Canadian product page |
| SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD | IP65 dust and water resistance; up to three-meter drop protection | Five-year limited warranty on SanDisk’s product page |
These are manufacturer specifications, not independent durability tests. Warranty coverage can vary by model and region; read the terms for the drive sold where you live. Sources: Samsung T7 Shield support, Samsung’s Canadian T7 Shield product page, and the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD page.

Use a portable SSD as one part of a backup plan
An external SSD can hold backup copies, but the cited product specifications and warranty pages do not establish archival lifetime or a complete backup workflow. Keep another copy of files you cannot afford to lose, ideally on a separate device or in another location, and verify that your backup process can restore the files. Do not treat any portable SSD as a permanent archive.

A practical selection checklist
- List the workload: decide whether the drive is mainly for backup copies, moving large files, storing games, or a mix.
- Choose capacity: add up the data and games you expect to keep on it and allow room for growth.
- Check the host connection: look up the port’s USB generation and supported bandwidth; do not pay for an interface your device cannot use.
- Confirm platform behavior: check the computer or console maker’s current requirements, game storage rules, filesystem needs, and cable compatibility.
- Compare physical protection and warranty: consider whether the drive will travel, then check the exact regional warranty terms separately.
- Keep another copy: if the files matter, include a separate copy and a restore check in your backup routine.
Two models to use as comparison points
Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield
Samsung specifies the T7 Shield at up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write, with USB 3.2 Gen 2, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, IP65 resistance, and a limited three-year warranty on its Canadian product page. It is an example to compare if you want a rugged enclosure and broad device compatibility. Samsung announced the speed figures in 2022; they are maximum manufacturer claims, not independent test results.
