Start with a contractor’s Manual J load calculation, check the matched system’s certified efficiency figures, then confirm how much heat it can deliver at the outdoor temperatures you actually face. A high SEER2 number alone cannot establish that a system will heat your home comfortably or lower your bills.
What a heat-pump mini-split does
A mini-split is a ductless heat-pump system that provides heating and cooling. It typically pairs an outdoor unit with one or more indoor units, allowing conditioned air to be delivered without conventional ductwork. ENERGY STAR treats these as professionally installed systems and recommends using certified product listings and qualified installers. ENERGY STAR’s ductless heating and cooling guidance explains the category and buyer considerations.

Start with three decisions that determine fit
1. Size the system for the home
Ask a qualified contractor to calculate the home’s heating and cooling loads using Manual J rather than selecting equipment by square footage alone. ENERGY STAR says properly sized HVAC equipment is essential to performance and comfort. The result should inform the system’s capacity and, for multi-zone designs, the number and placement of indoor units.
Room layout matters as much as the total floor area. A wall-mounted indoor unit primarily conditions the space where it is installed; doors, partitions, distance and limited air movement can prevent it from adequately serving other rooms. Ask how the proposed layout will move air to each space it is intended to cover.

2. Verify the exact matched system and ratings
Efficiency belongs to a specific indoor/outdoor combination, not simply a brand or product-family name. Ask the installer to identify the exact matched configuration in the applicable certified listing and provide its ratings. ENERGY STAR’s current criteria for split systems require at least 7.8 HSPF2 for heating, 15.2 SEER2 for seasonal cooling efficiency and 11.0 EER2 for cooling efficiency under specified conditions. These are certification thresholds, not promises about a particular home’s energy bills. See ENERGY STAR’s heat-pump equipment criteria.
3. Check heating performance at local winter temperatures
For a cold winter, look beyond a headline seasonal rating. ENERGY STAR’s cold-climate criteria for non-ducted split systems require at least 8.5 HSPF2 and 15.2 SEER2, along with low-temperature performance testing. That testing includes a coefficient of performance (COP) of at least 1.75 at 5°F and heating capacity at 5°F of at least 70% of the system’s capacity at 47°F; controls are also verified. Those measures provide more useful cold-weather evidence than a high SEER2 figure by itself.
Compare the system’s low-temperature capacity with the home’s calculated heating load. A unit that operates in very cold weather is not necessarily able to deliver enough heat to carry the home at that temperature. Ask the contractor to show the expected capacity at relevant outdoor temperatures and explain whether supplemental heat will be needed.

How to compare mini-split options
Use these questions to compare complete proposals, not just model-family marketing pages:
| What to compare | What to ask for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Climate fit | Cold-climate certification, plus heating capacity and efficiency at low outdoor temperatures relevant to your location | Operating-temperature claims do not by themselves show how much useful heat the system can deliver in the cold. |
| Seasonal efficiency | HSPF2 for heating and SEER2 and EER2 for cooling for the exact matched configuration | Ratings enable comparisons under defined conditions, but do not predict a household’s bill. |
| Load and zoning | Manual J results, proposed capacities, number and placement of indoor units, and the plan for air circulation | Correct sizing and air distribution affect comfort across rooms. |
| Installation and service | Installer experience with ductless equipment, maintenance access, warranty conditions and available local support | Equipment selection is only part of a successful installation and ownership plan. |
| Total economics | Installed price, local electricity and fuel costs, expected use, and confirmed utility or local incentives | Operating costs and incentives depend on the home, location and program rules. |
U.S. DOE FEMP publishes lifecycle-cost examples for specific regional assumptions. Its guidance updated in December 2024 describes a modeled Northern-region case in which $707 in 2023 dollars was the maximum upfront premium for the example ENERGY STAR-qualified model to still save over the less-efficient comparison model. The example used specified usage and cost assumptions, and its best-available model was based on December 2024 product data; it is not a savings prediction for an individual home. See DOE FEMP’s residential air-source heat-pump purchasing guidance.
What a product specification can—and cannot—tell you
Lennox describes its MWLD as a single-zone cold-climate mini-split family with up to 25 SEER2, up to 11 HSPF2 and operation at outdoor temperatures as low as -22°F. These are manufacturer-published maximum and operating claims for the product family, not independent head-to-head results or guarantees for every matched configuration. Ask for the ratings and low-temperature performance of the particular system proposed. See Lennox’s MWLD product information.

Will a mini-split be “300% efficient” or cut your bills?
A heat pump can move more heat energy than the electrical energy it consumes under particular operating conditions, which is why efficiency claims may be expressed as a ratio above 100%. That shorthand does not mean a specific home will get three units of heat for every unit of electricity across an entire season. Performance varies with outdoor temperature, equipment, installation and operating conditions. HSPF2, SEER2 and EER2 provide standardized seasonal or cooling-efficiency comparisons; none guarantees a household’s energy use or bill savings.
For a useful cost estimate, compare the proposed system with the heating equipment it would replace, using your local energy prices, likely usage and a realistic climate profile. DOE’s lifecycle examples are illustrative calculations based on stated assumptions, not household-specific payback estimates.
Check incentives using current rules for your location
For federal Section 25C advice in 2026, follow the IRS rather than older incentive language still appearing on some pages. The IRS states that the credit is not allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Its Fact Sheet 2025-05 was published in 2025. ENERGY STAR’s separate air-source heat-pump tax-credit page still presents older eligibility language extending through 2032; that information conflicts with the later IRS guidance and should not be treated as current 2026 advice.
Utility, state and municipal rebates can have different rules and availability by address. Confirm current eligibility, equipment requirements and deadlines with the program administrator before including any incentive in a project budget.
