The best emergency roadside kit is the one that fits your vehicle, climate, route and passengers—not necessarily the largest prepacked bundle. Start with a phone and charger, visibility gear, first aid, a flashlight and basic roadside supplies; then check the kit against your owner’s manual and add what your conditions require. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) publishes a recommended contents list, not rankings or endorsements of commercial kits.
What should be in a basic car emergency kit?
NHTSA recommends carrying an emergency roadside kit even in a well-maintained vehicle. Its Summer Driving Tips list is a practical baseline. A prepacked kit may not include every item, so check its contents rather than relying on its label.

- Communication: a cell phone and charger.
- Visibility and light: a flashlight, flares and a white flag.
- First aid and personal needs: a first aid kit, including a tourniquet, medicines, a change of clothes and work gloves.
- Tire and repair supplies: jumper cables, a tire pressure gauge, a jack and ground mat for changing a tire, basic repair tools and duct tape.
- Supplies for waiting: drinking water, nonperishable food, paper towels, emergency blankets, towels and coats.
- Vehicle-specific items: extra windshield washer fluid and maps.
Use your vehicle’s owner’s manual for its tire-changing instructions and equipment requirements. Check that the spare is present and usable, and inflate tires to the pressure specified in the manual or on the driver-door placard. NHTSA does not provide universal jump-start instructions or a recommended cable or portable booster specification in this guidance; follow the manual for your vehicle rather than assuming one procedure fits all.

No universal best brand, bundle, price, durability rating or independent kit-performance comparison is established by the cited guidance. NHTSA’s checklist supports evaluating the category, not endorsing a particular product.
What should you add to a winter car emergency kit?
Snow and ice can leave a vehicle stuck or delay help. NHTSA’s Winter Weather Driving Tips recommends adding a snow shovel, broom, ice scraper and abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter. Keep warning devices, blankets, a phone and charger, food, water and necessary medicine with you as well.

If your vehicle is stopped or stalled in winter conditions, NHTSA advises: “Stay with your car and don’t overexert yourself.” Make the vehicle visible with bright markers and an interior light, and clear snow from the exhaust pipe. Run the engine only sporadically and briefly for warmth to reduce carbon monoxide danger. These steps are from NHTSA’s winter driving guidance.

For a child riding in a car seat in cold weather, NHTSA says to use thin warm layers so the harness can remain properly snug, then place a blanket or coat over the secured harness. Bulky coats under the harness can create slack. See NHTSA’s car-seat cold-weather guidance.
