How to Choose an Electricity Tariff If You Use a Gaming PC

A gaming PC does not determine the cheapest tariff. Compare whole-house costs and estimate the computer’s contribution from realistic power draw and hours of use.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A gaming PC does not, by itself, tell you which electricity tariff will be cheapest. Compare tariffs using your household’s expected annual electricity use, then estimate how much your PC adds based on its actual average power draw and hours of use. Include the unit rate, standing charge, time bands, contract terms and any meter requirements in the comparison.

Compare the whole household bill, not just the PC’s power use

Electricity tariffs include a unit rate, charged for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) used, and a daily standing charge. The standing charge applies even on days when you use no electricity. Two offers with similar unit rates can therefore produce different totals, and the lowest unit rate is not necessarily the cheapest tariff for your household. Ofgem explains how unit rates and standing charges are calculated.

Compare offers using the same estimate of your household’s annual consumption. Check the live offer for your region and payment method: rates vary by region, payment arrangement and meter type. A national average is useful context, but it is not a quote for your home. For each tariff, consider:

  • Estimated annual cost at your household’s expected consumption, including the standing charge.
  • Whether the tariff has one unit rate or multiple rates, and the actual time bands and peak rates.
  • Whether the rate is fixed or variable, how long the offer lasts and what exit conditions apply.
  • Any eligibility rules or meter requirements, including whether a smart meter is needed.

Use the prices and conditions shown for your address and circumstances rather than assuming a tariff’s advertised headline rate applies to every customer.

Estimate how much electricity your gaming PC uses

The power-supply unit’s rated wattage is not the PC’s constant electricity draw. To estimate your gaming-related use, use a reasonable average draw during representative sessions—or measure the PC at the wall—and multiply it by the hours you use it. Include the monitor or other equipment only if you want their consumption counted too.

  1. Find or measure the average power draw in watts during the kind of use you want to estimate. A plug-in energy monitor can measure consumption at the socket; it is an aid, not a requirement. GPUsed describes practical ways to estimate gaming-PC running costs, but it is a commercial informational guide, not an independent test.
  2. Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000.
  3. Multiply kilowatts by hours of use to get kWh. For example, an assumed average draw of 400 W for 3 hours is 0.4 kW × 3 = 1.2 kWh. This is an illustration, not a claim about typical gaming-PC consumption.
  4. Multiply the resulting kWh by the tariff’s unit rate to estimate the usage cost for that session. Repeat for a representative week or year if you want a longer-term estimate.

Add the PC’s estimated usage to the household’s overall consumption profile when comparing offers. Do not assign the household’s entire daily standing charge to the PC: it is a tariff charge, not a charge based on the computer’s use.

Check whether a time-of-use tariff fits your gaming hours

A multi-rate tariff charges different unit rates at different times. It may be worthwhile if a substantial share of your household’s use—including gaming, heating or appliances where relevant—can take place in cheaper periods. If you mostly game during expensive peak hours, the higher rate could offset savings elsewhere.

Read the tariff’s actual schedule and compare the complete estimated household cost against single-rate alternatives. Check whether the offer requires a particular meter or has eligibility conditions. The tariff’s time bands and your household’s full pattern of use matter more than the fact that you own a gaming PC. Ofgem sets out current price-cap rates and explains single-rate and multi-rate tariffs.

Use price-cap figures as dated context, not a bill forecast

For Direct Debit customers in England, Scotland and Wales, Ofgem’s average default-tariff electricity figures for 1 October to 31 December 2026 are 26.32 pence per kWh and a 54.83 pence daily standing charge. These are averages, not guaranteed rates for an individual household; actual rates vary by region and payment arrangement. Ofgem also notes that electricity VAT treatment changes from 1 October 2026, so costs cannot be compared directly with the previous period. See Ofgem’s regional price-cap rates for the relevant period and tariff details.

Ofgem gives £1,723 per year as the average price-cap level for a typical household using electricity and gas and paying by Direct Debit for that same quarter. It is a typical-use illustration, not a gaming-PC household forecast. The price cap limits unit rates and standing charges on qualifying default tariffs; it does not cap the total bill, which rises with consumption. Fixed tariffs are outside the cap. Details are in Ofgem’s explanation of the price cap and standing charges.
