Start with your child’s needs and everyday experience, not with a label such as mainstream, special, private or alternative. Identify what helps them learn and participate, then compare what local options can actually provide. The guidance linked here includes examples from England and Northern Ireland; admissions, placement rights and education systems differ elsewhere, so check the rules with your local education authority.
Start by describing what your child needs
Before comparing settings, write down what you know about your child’s learning, wellbeing and daily routine. Include what enables them to take part, what makes learning or transitions harder, and what support or adjustments help. Note the practical factors that matter to your family, such as friendships, travel, schedules and cost where relevant.

For a child with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), include the support already in place, what is working, and what remains difficult. If the child is moving from one setting to another, ask the current setting to explain existing targets and support so you can discuss continuity with prospective schools.
Compare the actual offer, not the label
Use the same questions for each option. These comparison areas are a practical way to organise your decision, not an official scoring system.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Needs and support: What needs have been identified, and which specific adjustments, specialist expertise or provisions will be available to your child?
- Learning and curriculum: What is taught? How can teaching and participation be adapted? How will staff monitor progress?
- Belonging and wellbeing: How are pastoral care, behaviour, peer relationships and transitions handled?
- Access: Can your child use the buildings, facilities, lessons, activities and assessment arrangements?
- Practical fit: What are the admissions steps, location, travel time, transport arrangements, schedule and cost implications?
- Evidence and communication: What do the school’s published policies and inspection information tell you, and who will keep your family informed?
Review the curriculum, admissions arrangements, behaviour policy, SEND information, inspection reports and performance information. In England, GOV.UK advises families to contact their local council for state-funded school information and admission criteria; processes differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. GOV.UK’s school admissions guidance is a starting point for England. School visits and conversations with other parents can add context.
Inspection and attainment information can help you assess a school, but neither tells you exactly what your child’s day will be like. Ask whether a provision that sounds promising is available to your child specifically, rather than simply offered somewhere in the school.

Visit and ask how support will work day to day
Arrange visits to more than one option where possible. For SEND, ask to meet the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) or inclusion lead. Kent County Council recommends visiting, reading the school’s SEND policy and information report, asking questions, checking accessibility and considering travel and transport eligibility. Kent County Council’s SEND school-choice guidance offers a visit checklist.

- What would a typical day look like for my child, including lessons, breaks and transitions?
- How can teaching be made flexible enough for my child to access the curriculum?
- Which staff have relevant experience or training, and what support can they provide?
- How do pastoral care and communication with parents work?
- What exam access arrangements might be available, and how are these considered?
- Can my child take part in extracurricular activities, and what support might be needed?
- How will induction work? How does the school measure progress and involve parents?
- What support from outside agencies is available or coordinated?
- How will travel work, and is any transport support available or subject to eligibility rules?
If your child is changing schools, ask how the current and new SENCOs will coordinate the move and how existing targets or support will continue. Share relevant information about your child’s needs and, where appropriate, involve your child in visits and questions. The local-authority resources from Worcestershire SENDIASS and Hertfordshire County Council provide further prompts.
Make questions specific enough to test whether an arrangement is real and usable. Instead of asking only whether the school supports children with similar needs, ask who would deliver each part of the support, when and where it would happen, how staff would know whether it is working, and whom you should contact if it is not. Record answers so you can compare options consistently.

Understand school types without treating them as a quality ranking
In England, school types differ in governance, funding and freedom over how they operate. GOV.UK says community schools follow the national curriculum, while academies and free schools have more freedom and may follow a different curriculum. Academies receive government funding and are run by academy trusts. They do not charge fees and must follow the same admissions, SEND and exclusion rules as other state schools. See GOV.UK’s overview of school types and its guidance on academies.

Check local admissions and placement rules
Admissions processes, placement routes, transport eligibility, appeal procedures and home-education requirements depend on where you live. Confirm current requirements and dates with the relevant education authority before relying on a general guide.
For example, in England, GOV.UK states that a child with an education, health and care (EHC) plan may have a school named in the plan, and a school named in it must give the child a place. This is an England-specific statement, not a rule to assume applies everywhere. Check the current GOV.UK admissions guidance and seek advice from your local authority for an individual case.
Northern Ireland has a different framework. Its guidance says the Education Authority considers whether a chosen grant-aided school is suitable and whether other specified placement conditions are met. Read nidirect’s guidance on choosing a school for a child with special educational needs and contact the Education Authority about a particular placement.

There is no evidence here that one education setting is generally better for every child. A useful choice is the option whose actual provision, curriculum, access, wellbeing support and practical arrangements best match your child and family, under the rules that apply in your area. If you cannot establish whether a key support will be available, ask the school and relevant authority to clarify it before treating that option as a confirmed fit.
