How to Choose an Edge Security Provider for Atlassian Cloud

Choose an Atlassian Cloud edge security provider by first defining whether you need to control user traffic, Atlassian connections to your systems, identity, or isolation.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an edge security provider for Atlassian Cloud only after identifying which connection you need to control: users connecting to Atlassian, Atlassian connecting to your systems, or users authenticating through your identity provider. Those are different security jobs, and an external edge service is not automatically necessary. Map your existing controls and traffic first, then assess whether a provider supports the required Atlassian domains and changing IP ranges, fits your identity and logging processes, and meets your operational and data-handling requirements.

First, identify the traffic path you need to secure

“Edge security provider” can describe different services. A provider that inspects employee web traffic is not necessarily the tool that manages inbound connections from Atlassian Cloud, and neither is a substitute for an identity provider. Define the path and risk before comparing vendors.

Users connecting to Atlassian Cloud

If your goal is to apply web access policies to employees, assess secure web gateways, proxies, or related access services. Check how the service handles Atlassian domains, DNS, and network changes, and whether its inspection or access policies interfere with Atlassian Cloud. Atlassian notes that customers using third-party security tools such as Zscaler should allowlist *.atlassian.com to avoid disruption in its April 13–20, 2026 change guidance. That is a compatibility example, not an endorsement or a recommendation that every customer buy a third-party service: Atlassian Cloud changes Apr 13 to Apr 20, 2026.

Atlassian Cloud connecting to your systems

If Atlassian Cloud must reach customer-managed systems—for example, for webhooks or application links—focus on the published egress ranges and the firewall or allowlisting process on your side. This is distinct from controlling employees’ outbound web traffic. Identify every integration and destination that depends on these connections, and establish who will update your rules as Atlassian’s published requirements change.

Users authenticating to Atlassian

If the requirement is single sign-on, multifactor authentication, or access policy tied to user identity, evaluate your identity provider and federation configuration. Identity controls can complement network controls, but they do not perform the same job. Atlassian describes SAML SSO integration among its security measures; for Isolated Cloud, its documented login flow supports federation through SAML or OIDC.

Check Atlassian’s network requirements and change process

Atlassian does not use fixed individual app IP addresses for Cloud. It publishes address ranges and domains for customers who need restrictive network configurations. Atlassian also says that network optimization and the addition of edge regions can lead customers to encounter new addresses. Its documentation advises against limiting allowlists to region-specific ingress or egress networks. Review the live requirements rather than assuming an IP range identifies a permanent geographic boundary: Atlassian IP addresses and domains for Cloud apps.

When evaluating a provider, determine whether it can accommodate the relevant published domains and address ranges, including applicable IPv4 and IPv6 paths, and how it handles changes. Ask who monitors changes, who approves and applies policy updates, how exceptions are controlled, and how a broken integration or blocked user is diagnosed. Build those responsibilities into the operating plan instead of treating an initial allowlist as a set-and-forget configuration.

Compare providers against the actual requirement

These are buyer evaluation criteria based on Atlassian’s documented architecture and requirements, not an Atlassian vendor scorecard.

Evaluation area Questions to ask
Traffic path and purpose Does the service secure user-to-Atlassian traffic, Atlassian-to-customer connections, or both? Which specific requirement does it address?
Compatibility and change handling Can it support the required Atlassian domains, changing published ranges, DNS behavior, and relevant IPv4/IPv6 paths? Who maintains changes?
Identity and access How does it work with your SSO, MFA, and access policies? Is the proposed control actually a network-edge service, an identity control, or both?
Logging and response Which events can be logged, exported, and retained? Can the logs support your audit and incident-response workflows?
Residency and processing What data does the provider inspect or store, and where is it processed? Does that match the specific residency obligation?
Isolation and architecture Does the requirement call for an external control, Atlassian Isolated Cloud, or both? Which integrations and Marketplace apps must continue to work?
Operations and failure behavior Who owns exceptions, policy updates, outage triage, and decisions about fail-open or fail-closed behavior?

Map existing Atlassian controls before adding another layer

Atlassian’s Security Practices page describes encryption at rest, SAML 2.0 SSO integration, and minimum security requirements for Marketplace apps. Its Security Measures, effective October 7, 2025, also describe centralized logging, monitoring audit events for unusual activity, firewall maintenance, network and host defenses, and logical customer data segregation.

Map these controls against your organization’s requirements and responsibilities before paying for overlapping services. Atlassian’s controls do not, by themselves, establish that your organization has no remaining work around identity, network configuration, Marketplace apps, integrations, or operational policy.

Distinguish data residency from isolation

Data residency is scoped to in-scope app data

Atlassian describes data residency as pinning in-scope app data to a selected location, configured at the app level. It does not mean every category of account data, logs, or integration data is pinned there: globally distributed user account information and some logs, integrations, and other data may be out of scope. Inventory the data and processing activity covered by your actual obligation, including what an external provider inspects or stores. See Atlassian’s data residency explanation.

Isolated Cloud is an architectural option for strict isolation needs

Atlassian describes Isolated Cloud as a dedicated, single-tenant environment for organizations with strict security, compliance, or data-isolation requirements. Its documented login path still brings requests to Atlassian Global Edge before forwarding them into the isolated environment; identity can be federated using SAML or OIDC. Assess it against the isolation requirement, app dependencies, and integration needs rather than assuming an external edge provider supplies the same architecture. See Learn about Atlassian Isolated Cloud and Login flow and federated identity in Atlassian Isolated Cloud.

Make the decision in a practical sequence

  1. Write down the requirement. Specify whether you need user web-traffic inspection, control of Atlassian-to-customer connections, identity federation, or a combination.
  2. Map the current architecture. List Atlassian products, connected systems, Marketplace apps, identity services, existing network controls, and owners.
  3. Check documented compatibility. Compare the proposed service’s domain, IP-range, DNS, and address-family handling with Atlassian’s current network documentation. Plan how changes will be applied.
  4. Review data and operations. Establish what the provider processes or retains, where processing occurs, what it logs, and who handles updates, exceptions, failures, and incident investigation.
  5. Compare the control to the need. If the requirement is SSO or MFA, assess identity controls; if it is isolation, assess the architecture; if it is traffic inspection or network allowlisting, evaluate the corresponding network service. Avoid purchasing a layer that does not solve the identified problem.
