If you must send password-reset messages through your own email API and cannot use webhooks, choose an authentication setup that exposes a reset credential to your backend without sending the email itself. These are separate decisions: who creates the credential, who controls the message, and who delivers it. Of the documented options below, Auth0’s password-change ticket is the clearest fit for external delivery; Supabase’s email hook is explicitly callback-based, while the cited Firebase and Clerk flows do not establish application-owned delivery.
What “custom password-reset email” can mean
Editing an email’s subject or body does not necessarily let your application send it. An authentication provider may own delivery even when it gives you template controls. For a no-webhook architecture, the key capability is different: your backend must be able to obtain a reset link, token, ticket, or code, then send it using your chosen email API without an auth-provider callback.

- Credential generation: the system that creates the reset credential.
- Template ownership: the system or application that defines the email content.
- Delivery ownership: the service that actually sends the message.
- Callback requirement: whether the auth provider calls your endpoint to hand off the message.
Which documented options fit a strict no-webhook requirement?
| Option | Template and delivery ownership | No-webhook assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Auth0 password-change ticket | Your application can send the generated ticket URL through its chosen communication channel. | Strongest documented fit among these options for application-owned delivery. See Auth0’s ticket-handling documentation. |
| Auth0 customized email template | Liquid-editable template; delivery uses a configured external SMTP provider. | Template customization is supported, but this is not evidence of direct email-API delivery. Auth0 says an external SMTP provider is required: customize email templates. |
| Supabase native auth templates | Configurable recovery template; Supabase’s auth email path delivers the message. | Supports template configuration, but the cited documentation does not establish arbitrary email-API delivery without a hook. See Supabase email templates. |
| Supabase Send Email Hook | Your hook handler can implement message content and call an external email provider. | Not suitable when hooks or webhook-style callbacks are prohibited: the hook replaces built-in sending. See Supabase Send Email Hook. |
| Firebase Auth reset email | Firebase sends the reset email; its template can be customized in the console. | The cited flow does not show the reset link being handed to an application-owned email API. See Firebase’s Manage Users documentation. |
| Clerk custom forgot-password flow | The documented flow sends a code by email or phone; it covers custom UI and code entry. | The cited page does not establish app-owned message delivery through an arbitrary email API without callbacks. See Clerk’s custom forgot-password flow. |
Why Auth0’s ticket approach is different
Auth0 documents a Management API endpoint that creates a password-change ticket URL for the organization to deliver. That separates ticket creation from the act of emailing it: your application can put the URL into a message sent through its own communication channel rather than relying on Auth0’s automated reset email. Read Auth0’s guidance on email and ticket handling for the documented flow.

Do not confuse this with Auth0’s template-customization feature. That path lets you edit the content, but the documentation requires an external SMTP provider and says the templates are unavailable with Auth0’s built-in email provider. SMTP support alone does not prove that a provider offers a direct API integration; confirm whether your chosen mail service supports the delivery method you need.

Where Supabase fits—and where it does not
Native templates
Supabase documents configurable authentication email templates, including recovery content and URL or token-hash variables. This is useful when you want to change the message while leaving delivery on Supabase’s auth email path. The cited template documentation does not establish that the native path can hand the message directly to any arbitrary email API without a hook.
Send Email Hook
The hook replaces Supabase’s built-in email sending and lets a handler send through an external provider. Supabase also publishes a React Email and Resend example. But the mechanism is still an HTTP hook. It offers delivery flexibility only if callbacks are acceptable, so it fails a strict no-webhook acceptance test.

How to validate a provider before committing
- Prove credential generation is separable from delivery. Find endpoint-level documentation showing that your backend can request a reset credential without the provider automatically sending the email.
- Confirm the handoff format. Determine whether the application receives a link, ticket, token, or code, and whether it can place that value in its own email.
- Check the complete reset flow. Verify credential expiry, single-use behavior, permitted audience or redirect destinations, and how the final password change is validated. The cited sources do not establish these details consistently across providers.
- Confirm your delivery integration is genuinely API-based. If documentation specifies SMTP, do not assume that means a direct email API is supported; verify the mail provider’s available integration and configuration.
- Review operational controls. Check tenant or plan availability, redirect restrictions, abuse prevention, and rate limits in the provider’s current documentation. The cited material does not supply a consistent comparison of these limits.
Choose by the architecture you need
- Need your backend to send the message through its own API with no callback: Auth0’s ticket-generation flow is the clearest documented pattern here, subject to validating endpoint behavior and tenant setup.
- Want to edit the message but are comfortable with provider delivery: Supabase native templates or Firebase’s console-configurable reset email may suit that requirement; neither cited source demonstrates direct application-owned sending through an arbitrary email API.
- Can accept an HTTP callback: Supabase’s Send Email Hook supports external-provider delivery and has an official Resend example.
- Considering Clerk: the cited custom flow documents code-based reset interaction, not application-owned email delivery. Seek explicit documentation for exposing a reset credential to your backend before treating it as a fit.
This comparison reflects the cited product documentation, not hands-on testing. Provider features, tenant availability, and integrations can change; verify the current endpoint and configuration requirements before implementation.
