How to Choose an Android Tablet Refresh Rate for Smoothness and Battery Life

Adaptive refresh rate is a sensible starting point when available. Compare it with a lower setting on your own tablet to weigh smoother motion against battery runtime.

For a practical balance, start with adaptive refresh rate if your tablet offers it: the display can use a higher rate when motion benefits and a lower one when it does not. Choose a standard or lower rate when battery runtime matters more than maximum smoothness. The best setting depends on the tablet, apps, and what you do on it; there is no universal battery-savings figure.

What refresh rate changes

Refresh rate is how many times a display updates per second, measured in hertz (Hz). A higher supported rate can make scrolling, animations, pen input, and compatible games look or feel smoother. The benefit depends on the panel and the content being shown.

An app asking for a particular frame rate does not force the display to use it. Android considers the display modes supported by the device, settings, system conditions, app requests, and active content when deciding what rate to use. Android’s refresh-rate documentation describes these platform mechanisms; manufacturers determine which display modes and user controls their tablets expose.

Should you use 60Hz or 120Hz on your tablet?

If your tablet provides both modes, the choice is a trade-off rather than a rule that applies to every model. A 120Hz option can make supported motion look smoother than 60Hz, while a lower fixed rate may suit reading or other mostly static use. The effect on battery runtime varies with the device and workload; choosing 120Hz does not mean battery life will be cut in half.

Setting When it may suit you What to expect
Adaptive or automatic You want the display to respond to changing content without choosing a fixed rate. The system may raise or lower refresh according to device support and current conditions. The exact behavior varies by tablet.
Higher fixed rate, such as 120Hz where supported You prioritize smooth scrolling, animations, pen interaction, or compatible games. Motion may look smoother when the panel and content support it. Battery impact is device- and workload-dependent.
Standard or lower fixed rate, such as 60Hz where offered You prioritize runtime, especially during reading or mostly static use. Motion may look less smooth than at a higher rate. Any runtime improvement varies and is not guaranteed.

These examples apply only when the tablet actually supports the relevant modes. Not every Android tablet has a high-refresh panel or a manual 60Hz/120Hz switch.

Should you turn on adaptive refresh rate?

Adaptive is a sensible first setting when available and when you want both responsive motion and reasonable power use. Android 15 adds a platform feature called Adaptive Refresh Rate that can let supported displays adapt to content cadence using discrete VSync steps. Android says this can reduce power use and jank, but device makers must implement it and choose the device’s power trade-offs. Android’s Adaptive Refresh Rate documentation does not mean every Android 15 tablet includes the feature.

Manufacturers may also offer their own adaptive behavior. For example, Samsung said the Galaxy Tab S9 series dynamically calibrates from 60Hz to 120Hz to balance responsiveness and battery efficiency. That is Samsung’s model-specific description, not a guarantee about other Samsung tablets or an independent battery comparison. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 announcement gives the product-specific detail.

Find the refresh-rate setting on your tablet

  1. Open Settings and start at Display.
  2. Look for a control named Refresh rate, Motion smoothness, Adaptive, or something similar. Labels and locations vary by manufacturer and model.
  3. If the setting offers adaptive, standard, or high options, select one and use the tablet normally. If there is no refresh-rate control, the device may not expose a choice; it may also lack a high-refresh display.

There is no single Android-wide menu path or set of choices. A Pixel Tablet specification, for example, identifies its screen size and panel type but does not identify a high-refresh mode in the cited specification excerpt. Do not assume that a particular rate is available unless your device’s settings or manufacturer specifications say so.

How to compare smoothness and battery use on your own tablet

To decide whether changing the setting helps in your routine, compare modes during similar use rather than drawing a conclusion from a brief battery-percentage change.

  1. Choose two settings your tablet actually offers, such as adaptive and standard.
  2. Use each for comparable activities over a meaningful period—for example, reading and scrolling—at similar brightness and with the same power mode.
  3. Check whether motion feels noticeably different and review battery use over those comparable periods.
  4. Keep the setting that best fits your priorities. If the difference is not useful to you, there is no need to favor a higher rate just because it is available.

This is a practical comparison for your own use, not a manufacturer-validated test protocol. Battery life also depends on factors beyond refresh rate, including brightness, apps, connectivity, and other device settings.

What Battery Saver and apps can change

Android’s platform documentation says Battery Saver restricts refresh rate to 60Hz or lower when the device is in low-power mode. The behavior of a specific tablet still depends on its implementation. Android’s multiple-refresh-rate documentation describes this policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apps may request a rate, but Android’s display scheduler weighs that request against other conditions. A game or app therefore cannot guarantee that the screen will run at its requested rate on every device or in every power state.

Why a single battery-savings number would mislead

The available official examples do not establish a universal percentage or number of hours saved by lowering an Android tablet’s refresh rate. Google’s Pixel Tablet specification lists up to 12 hours of video streaming, but that figure comes from a specific test on pre-production hardware and software in California in early 2023: YouTube over Wi-Fi at 1080p, with brightness at 82% and Adaptive Brightness and Ambient EQ off. Google cautions that actual battery life may be lower. The figure is not a comparison of refresh-rate settings and should not be used to estimate savings from changing them. Google’s Pixel Tablet specifications describe the test conditions.
