How to Choose an Amplifier for the FiiO FT15 Headphones

The FiiO FT15 does not call for a high-power amp by default. Start with a suitable headphone output, then check connector fit and your listening needs.

You do not need to start with a high-power desktop amplifier for the FiiO FT15. FiiO lists the headphones at 24 Ω impedance and 95 dB/mW sensitivity, and says they are “easily driven by a USB dongle.” Start with a suitable headphone output you already own; add a separate amp only if it cannot provide the volume or connections you need.

What the FT15’s specifications mean for amplifier choice

FiiO’s official launch article describes the FT15 as “Easy to drive: 95dB/mW high sensitivity and 24Ω low impedance—easily driven by a USB dongle.” FiiO’s FT15 launch article is the source for these specifications and its recommendation; the inspected page does not display a publication year, and these are manufacturer statements rather than independent measurements.

Together, those figures and FiiO’s guidance do not indicate a need for a high-power desktop amplifier. They also do not establish a precise minimum output, guarantee that every phone or computer will be sufficient, or show that more power will improve sound. FiiO’s CLASS A output specifications describe that amplifier across loads and gain modes, but do not establish that it is required for the FT15.

Start with the headphone output you already have

Try the headphone output on a suitable phone, computer, USB dongle, or other source before buying a separate amplifier. This follows from FiiO’s guidance that the FT15 can be driven by a USB dongle; FiiO does not specify compatible devices, dongle models, listening levels, or a minimum power target.

FiiO BTR13 Bluetooth Headphone Amplifier with LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, AAC (Dual CS43131 3.5mm Unbalanced & 4.4mm Balanced Output) (Black)
  • The BTR13 features a PC/BT/PHONE three-position switch, allowing you to quickly switch between computer sound card, Bluetooth decoding, and mobile phone modes. This not only eliminates the hassle of switching between different devices but also meets your multi-device, multi-scenario needs with just one unit.
  • The BTR13 uses the Qualcomm QCC5125 Bluetooth chip, supporting Bluetooth formats such as LDAC, aptX, aptX LL, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, AAC, and SBC. Whether via Bluetooth or USB DAC, it can achieve up to 96kHz sampling rate for high-definition audio transmission, ensuring you enjoy Hi-Fi sound across multiple devices.
  • The BTR13 features a high-end Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC for each channel, with one DAC dedicated to processing each stereo channel. This setup effectively reduces crosstalk and faithfully reproduces audio, allowing you to enjoy a purer sound experience.
  • No need to worry about using PEQ settings! The BTR13 comes with various preset sound effects and allows for online sharing. You can also finely adjust EQ frequencies, gain, and bandwidth through FiiO’s proprietary algorithms and app or web interface. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced user, the BTR13 meets your personalized tuning needs.
  • Weighing just 28.6g, the BTR13 perfectly blends portability with high performance. Its independent power supply system for the built-in headphone amplifier maximizes output, boosting the balanced output power to 220mW+220mW—an impressive 282% increase compared to the BTR3K, making it a top performer among similar products with the same chip.

If your current source cannot reach a comfortable listening level, lacks a headphone output, or does not provide a connection you can use, consider a separate USB DAC/headphone-amplifier dongle or another headphone amp that suits your setup. Treat that as a practical compatibility choice, not as an upgrade guaranteed to improve sound. No specific dongle or amplifier model has been established as a tested match.

Match the amplifier output to the FT15 cable

FiiO lists a 4.4 mm balanced cable and 6.35 mm and XLR-4 adapters among the FT15 package contents. Check the purchased unit’s contents—especially if it is used or from a different regional package—and match the amplifier’s headphone output with the cable or an appropriate adapter. The package list is from FiiO’s FT15 launch article.

  • 【Works with Your Existing Audio Sources】 Add powerful amplification to DACs, DAPs, smartphones, computers, CD players, and other analog audio sources through the RCA and 3.5mm inputs. Dual gain modes help match the output to sensitive IEMs as well as power-hungry headphones.
  • 【5V or 12V PD Power for Flexible Use】 GIGAS 1 supports standard 5V USB power for everyday listening and USB-C PD 12V power for higher output capability, greater dynamics, and more headroom. An optional 3.5mm-to-USB-C cable bundle makes it easier to connect compatible phones and computers to your desktop setup.

The included balanced cable does not mean balanced amplification is necessary. Choose an output and cable combination that works with your equipment; do not assume a connector will fit simply because it is included in the headphone package.

When a desktop amplifier makes sense

A desktop unit can be a reasonable choice if its features, available inputs, controls, or output connections suit how you listen. Its size or power rating alone is not a reason to choose it for the FT15: FiiO’s statement supports starting with a USB dongle, and the available manufacturer information gives no FT15-specific desktop-power requirement or evidence that extra amplifier power improves its sound.
