For a screen that stays in one room and keeps Alexa visible and hands-free, look at the Echo Show family instead. The choice is mainly about where the screen will live and what you want it to do—not just its size.
Start with the kind of screen you want
Choose an Alexa Tablet for portable use
An Alexa Tablet is the more natural fit if you want a touchscreen you can pick up and move around the home, as well as use for general tablet tasks. Amazon’s 2026 lineup includes the Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 12 Pro. Their published specifications distinguish screen size, resolution, memory, and storage; they do not establish battery life, comparative speed, or value for money.

Choose an Echo Show for a room-based display
Echo Show is Amazon’s smart-display family. Amazon says its screen devices add visual responses to Alexa and can show video, security-camera feeds, and photos. Echo Show models are intended as room displays rather than portable tablets. The lineup cited by Amazon includes Echo Show 5 and 8, Echo Show 11 (2025 release), and Echo Show 15 and 21.

Can a Fire tablet act as an Alexa display?
Some Fire tablets support Show Mode, which turns a compatible tablet into a visual display for Alexa. Compatibility depends on the exact generation and software version; it does not apply to every Fire tablet. If you are considering an older Fire tablet for this purpose, use Amazon’s Show Mode compatibility list before buying.

Choose by how you will use the screen
For a tablet you will carry
The Tablet 8 has the smallest listed screen and lowest resolution of the three, making it the compact option. The Tablet 11 increases screen area and resolution, while the Tablet 12 Pro is slightly larger still and has the highest listed resolution. For reading or video, compare the actual pixel dimensions as well as the diagonal size: “larger” alone does not tell you how sharp a screen is.
For a shared, always-visible household screen
Consider an Echo Show when the screen will live in one place and people need to see it from around a room. Amazon lists Echo Show widgets for calendar, reminders, smart home, shopping list, music, notifications, games, sounds, news, and weather. The number, size, and arrangement of widgets vary by device. See Amazon’s Echo Show widgets guide for device and feature details.

For a large shared display, the Echo Show 15 offers a 15.6-inch 1080p screen, while the Echo Show 21 offers a 21.4-inch 1080p panel and built-in Fire TV. Their fixed-room format is the key distinction from a tablet you can carry; the published figures do not establish which is easier to use or better value.
For an interface that adapts to viewing distance
Amazon’s Adaptive Content setting is model-specific. Amazon lists support for Echo Show 8 (2nd generation and newer), Echo Show 10 (2nd generation), Echo Show 11 (2025 release), both Echo Show 15 generations, and Echo Show 21. If this feature matters, verify that the exact generation you are considering is on Amazon’s Adaptive Content model list.

Check Show Mode carefully on a Fire tablet
Amazon lists Show Mode support for these Fire tablet combinations:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Fire HD 8 (7th generation): software 5.6.1.0 or later.
- Fire HD 8 (8th generation): software 6.3.0.1 or later.
- Fire HD 8 (10th generation): software 7.3.1.4 or later.
- Fire HD 10 (7th generation): software 5.5.0.0 or later.
- Fire HD 10 (9th generation): software 7.3.1.1 or later.
- Fire HD 10 (11th generation): software 7.3.1.8 or later.
Amazon explicitly lists these as incompatible: Fire 7 (7th, 9th, and 12th generations), Fire HD 8 (12th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation), and Fire HD 10 (13th generation). Model and software eligibility matter, so a tablet’s being a Fire device does not by itself mean Show Mode will work.

On a compatible model, Amazon says you can switch modes using the home-screen toggle, the Alexa app, or the voice command “Alexa, switch to Show Mode.” Its support page describes the feature as a way to “turn your compatible tablet into a visual display to engage with Alexa from across the room.”
A practical decision checklist
- Pick an Alexa Tablet if you want a portable touchscreen for general tablet use as well as Alexa.
- Pick an Echo Show if the screen will stay in one room for visible Alexa responses, widgets, video, photos, or security-camera feeds.
- Compare screen resolution as well as diagonal size, especially if you will read or share the screen.
- Confirm the exact generation before relying on Adaptive Content or Fire tablet Show Mode.
- Check current local listings for price, availability, and regional model details; the published specifications cited here do not establish those changing retail facts.
Amazon’s published model pages and support information establish the listed specifications and feature eligibility, not battery life, independent performance, long-term reliability, or comparative ease of use.
