Choose an AI threat detection platform by first defining which systems and security domains it must cover, then testing how well it detects threats in your environment, how much work its alerts leave for analysts, and what it costs to operate. Treat “AI” as a feature to evaluate—not proof of accuracy—and validate finalists with representative attack and ordinary business activity before buying.
Define what you need the platform to do
“AI threat detection platform” is not a single product category. The label may refer to endpoint detection and response (EDR), security information and event management (SIEM), extended detection and response (XDR), or a combination. These categories can overlap, so check the telemetry a product actually ingests and the actions it can take rather than assuming its label guarantees coverage.

Start with the systems and risks that matter to your organization. List the sources you need monitored—such as endpoints, identity systems, cloud environments, network devices, email, and business applications—and identify which teams will investigate and respond to alerts. That scope helps you distinguish a genuine coverage gap from a feature you do not need.
Match the product category to your coverage needs
| Category | What to verify |
|---|---|
| EDR | Which endpoint operating systems and devices it supports, what endpoint events it collects, and whether it can isolate or remediate a device. |
| SIEM | Whether it can ingest, normalize, search, retain, and correlate the logs and events your investigations require. |
| XDR | Which security domains it connects and whether its detections and response workflows span those sources in practice. |
| Combined approach | How data and cases move between products, where analysts work, and which system is authoritative for investigation and response. |
These are practical distinctions, not guarantees that every vendor uses the terms identically. Confirm coverage using your own required sources and workflows.

Compare platforms on evidence, not AI claims
Ask vendors to show how detections are produced, what evidence appears in an alert, how related events are grouped, and what the system misses or treats as benign. A useful detection is not merely an alert: it gives an analyst enough context to decide what happened and what to do next.
| Evaluation area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Coverage and telemetry | Can the platform ingest the required endpoint, cloud, identity, email, network, and application events? Are they complete, timely, and usable in investigations? |
| Detection quality | Which threats and techniques were tested? What was detected, missed, or classified as benign? What evidence and context accompany each alert? |
| Noise and analyst effort | How are related events grouped? What false positives arise during ordinary IT and business activity? How much investigation remains for staff? |
| Response | Which containment and remediation actions are available? Which can run automatically, and which require analyst approval? |
| AI oversight | Can staff understand, audit, and challenge AI-assisted recommendations? Are limitations and data handling documented? |
| Operational fit | Does the deployment model fit your technology stack, skills, retention needs, and regulatory constraints? |
| Total cost | What will ingestion, storage, licenses, implementation, integrations, tuning, and staffing cost at expected scale? |
Do not treat a vendor’s connector count as evidence that your important sources work well. Verify that each required integration delivers the right events, at the needed latency and quality, and understand any costs or retention limits attached to that data.

Use independent evaluations carefully
MITRE ATT&CK Evaluations can help structure questions about detection coverage, precision, speed, and false positives. They are an evaluation resource, not a product recommendation or a guarantee of results in your environment. Compare the scenarios and configurations tested, not just a headline result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAs of October 7, 2026, MITRE describes its Enterprise 2025 evaluation as focused on cloud-based attacks and abuse of legitimate tools and processes. Its Enterprise 2026 information is a call for participation, not published results. Before using any evaluation in a purchasing decision, confirm the product version, configuration, licenses, integrations, and services involved.

Validate finalists with a proof of value
A controlled pilot is the best way to test whether a platform fits your actual telemetry and operating conditions. Include both adversarial activity and normal work: approved administration scripts, common IT tools, and representative business workflows. Testing only attack simulations can conceal the daily alert noise that determines whether a team can operate the product.
- Agree on scope. Select the data sources, scenarios, success measures, and response actions to test. Use scenarios relevant to your threat model and the systems in scope.
- Confirm the setup. Record the product version, license, enabled integrations, configuration, and any vendor or partner services used. Make sure the pilot receives representative data rather than a specially curated feed.
- Run attack and benign activity. Test the agreed scenarios alongside ordinary administration and business operations. Include cases where activity should be recognized as authorized or benign.
- Record outcomes. Track true detections, misses, time to alert, alert context, case grouping, analyst effort, false positives, and response behavior.
- Review the evidence. Ask analysts to work the resulting cases and document whether they can establish what happened and take the intended action. Separate observed pilot results from vendor claims or public evaluation results.
MITRE’s measurement dimensions can inform the test plan, but your organization’s own scenarios are necessary to assess local fit. Agree on pass criteria before the pilot so teams do not redefine success after seeing the results.

Proof of ownership of a valid device is required to participate. This program ensures that businesses move to stronger next-generation protection while maintaining service continuity and access to SonicWall’s latest security innovations.
Check governance and human control
AI-assisted recommendations and automated actions need an accountable operating owner. Establish who can approve changes to detections, who can authorize containment, how actions are logged, and how staff can review or reverse an action. Test those controls during the pilot rather than relying only on product descriptions.
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) offers voluntary guidance for governing, mapping, measuring, and managing AI risks. NIST’s AI RMF Core includes evaluation, monitoring, and human-oversight outcomes. The framework is not a product certification and does not prove that a vendor meets your requirements. NIST notes that AI RMF 1.0 is under revision in its current framework resource. Microsoft’s responsible-AI guidance for its security AI capabilities likewise says humans remain responsible for critical decisions and actions in the documented Sentinel context.

NIST SP 800-37 Rev. 2 provides a broader risk-management framework for information systems and organizations. It can support a risk-based selection and monitoring process, but it does not rank security products. Together, these frameworks can help structure governance questions; neither substitutes for testing the platform against your requirements.
Estimate the cost of operating the platform
Model the cost at expected data volume and operating scale, not just the quoted license price. Include the effort required to implement, integrate, tune, and investigate the system, as well as any storage and retention needs.
- Data: Estimate ingestion and storage for the sources you intend to onboard, and ask how volume, retention, and data-tier choices affect charges.
- Licensing and services: Confirm which capabilities are included and which require additional licenses, implementation work, or support.
- Operations: Account for integration maintenance, detection tuning, alert review, incident handling, and staff training.
- Scale changes: Ask how costs change when data sources, event volume, retention, or the number of operators increase.
Microsoft describes Sentinel pricing in terms of analytics and data-lake tiers and ingested data volume. That describes one vendor’s pricing approach, not a universal cross-vendor total-cost model. Build the same cost categories for each finalist and request estimates based on your expected usage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Microsoft describes Sentinel as a cloud-native SIEM with AI-assisted investigation, data ingestion and storage tiers, and integration with XDR capabilities. Its current product page states that Sentinel has more than 350 native connectors and supports no-code custom integrations. Those are vendor-stated product claims, not independent measures of detection effectiveness or proof that your required integrations will work as needed. Verify the specific sources, data quality, and costs in your own evaluation.
There is no universal winner established by public evaluations or framework guidance. A strong choice is the platform—or combination of platforms—that covers the data you need, produces useful results in your pilot, fits your response and oversight requirements, and can be operated within your budget and staffing capacity.
