Choose an AI coding assistant by checking what data it receives, what security checks it actually performs, what actions it can take, and whether your team can govern and audit its use. Then pilot it on representative repositories with your normal reviews and security tools still in place. An “AI security assistant” can mean a coding assistant used for security work—or one whose own use must be secured; this guide covers both. No assistant should be treated as a complete application-security product.
What should a development team evaluate?
Compare candidates against the same requirements rather than relying on a product’s security label or feature list. A useful evaluation covers six areas:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Data boundary: What content reaches the service or its model providers, and how is that content handled?
- Security coverage: Which specific checks does the product run, and what remains for other tools and reviewers?
- Agent permissions: Can it only suggest text, or can it read repositories, run commands, access networks, and change code?
- Administration and audit: Can your organization enforce policy, control access, and see what users and agents do?
- Workflow fit: Does it work reliably with your IDEs, repositories, languages, and review process?
- Pilot evidence: Does it help on your team’s real tasks without creating unacceptable defects, friction, or policy exceptions?
Set requirements against your own data classifications, regulatory obligations, threat model, and development stack. There is no single policy that fits every organization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat happens to company code and other data?
“Does it train on our code?” and “What data does it store?” do not have one product-wide yes-or-no answer. The answer can vary by provider, account type, contract, service tier, feature, model, and settings. Review the terms for the exact organization plan and features you intend to enable—not just a general marketing statement.

Inventory what the assistant could receive: source files and repository metadata, prompts, issue and pull-request text, terminal output, logs, and secrets that may accidentally enter context. For each feature, establish which service and model provider process that data, where it is processed or stored, whether it is used for training or other model improvement, how long it is retained, how deletion works, and which contract terms apply.
Vendor documentation illustrates why the details matter. Anthropic’s commercial data-retention policy, dated July 1, 2026, says API inputs and outputs are generally deleted within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. It separately says commercial products that let users save conversations retain chats and coding sessions to provide an ongoing product experience. Anthropic describes Zero Data Retention (ZDR) availability under specified arrangements; Claude Code qualifies when used with commercial-organization API keys or Claude Enterprise with ZDR enabled. The applicable API documentation also describes feature and metrics exceptions, so ZDR should not be read as a blanket promise covering every kind of data.
Cursor says AI requests send prompts and code context to model providers. Its Privacy Mode is described as preventing code from being used for training by Cursor or those providers, while Cloud Agents store encrypted repository copies temporarily while working. Cursor also identifies model-specific retention exceptions that may require administrator approval. Amazon Q Developer says it stores questions, responses, and additional context; its documentation describes regional treatment for some workforce users at the Pro tier, depending on feature. Confirm the current model, feature, tier, region, and settings for your intended configuration.

These are vendor descriptions of particular services and conditions, not a substitute for reviewing the contract and configuration your organization will actually use.
Can an AI coding assistant find vulnerabilities?
It may help explain a finding, suggest a fix, identify common flaws, or check generated code, but those capabilities are not equivalent to comprehensive security analysis. Ask which component performs each check, what it covers, whether it runs automatically, whether users or administrators can disable it, what reports or logs it produces, and what is outside its coverage.
GitHub documents that Copilot cloud agent checks generated code by default and describes CodeQL, secret scanning, dependency-advisory checks, session logs, and pull-request approval controls. Those are documented safeguards, not evidence that every flaw will be found or fixed. GitHub also cautions: “Copilot Chat can help detect and resolve common vulnerabilities in your code, but you shouldn’t rely on Copilot for comprehensive security analysis.” GitHub points to code scanning for more thorough coverage.

Keep the team’s existing secure-development process in place. Treat generated suggestions as third-party code: review them, test them, and run the organization’s usual security checks. Vendor filters and scans can reduce risk, but they do not guarantee secure output.

How much autonomy and access does the assistant need?
Classify each candidate by how it operates: inline suggestion, chat, IDE agent, repository agent, or another form of automation. A tool that can act on a repository has a larger security footprint than one that only offers inline completions.
OWASP’s living Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet describes coding agents that may execute shell commands, install packages, edit files, run tests, access networks, and push branches. GitHub’s cloud-agent documentation likewise discusses risks involving sensitive information, prompt injection, autonomous code changes, and review and branch controls. Map those capabilities to your threat model rather than assuming that an AI feature labelled “security” is safe by default.

- FIDO2 Certified Protection – Enjoy phishing-resistant security with FIDO2 certification, ensuring top-tier account safety across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS iOS, Android and more.
- Easy to use & Portable – Designed with a compact USB-C interface, Clife key fits easily on your keychain for secure access anywhere. Simply plug in and authenticate with ease.
- Universal Compatibility – Works seamlessly with hundreds of FIDO2/U2F compliant services, including popular cloud, email, and social platforms.
- Backup recommended – To ensure continuous access, register a backup Clife security key as a spare in case your primary key is lost.
For each candidate, document whether it can:
- Read repositories, issues, pull requests, logs, or other internal content.
- Run shell commands, install dependencies, or access the network.
- Modify files, create branches, open pull requests, or start workflows.
- Use credentials or reach systems beyond the repository it is meant to work on.
Then establish how permissions are scoped, which actions require human approval, whether network access can be restricted, who may invoke the agent, and how its activity is attributed and logged. Limit credentials and repository access to what the task requires.
Which administrative and organizational controls matter?
Check whether administrators can centrally manage identity, access, model and feature settings, sensitive-content exclusions, network allowlists, and audit or usage logs. Find out whether controls apply to every user and feature, are optional or delegated, or require a specific account tier or additional license. Review deployment options and how policy changes are rolled out.
GitHub’s enterprise rollout guidance identifies legal, compliance, cybersecurity, and IT as common stakeholders, and calls out data use, compliance, network configuration, access policies, audit logs, and sensitive-content exclusions. AWS describes a shared responsibility model for Amazon Q Developer: AWS protects its cloud infrastructure, while customers remain responsible for content control and service security configuration and management.

Use these areas as a review agenda, not as a claim that a particular vendor’s controls satisfy your organization’s policies. Confirm the controls and responsibilities for the exact product configuration under consideration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare current options?
The table summarizes what the vendors’ documentation describes; it is not a ranking or an independent comparison of security outcomes.
| Option | What vendor documentation describes | Questions to resolve for your team |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot and cloud agent | GitHub describes coding assistance and warns that generated suggestions can contain insecure patterns. Its cloud-agent documentation describes default security validation, including CodeQL, secret scanning, dependency checks, pull-request controls, and session logs. | Which plan and features will be enabled? Who may invoke the agent? Which controls can administrators disable? What content or repositories are excluded? What additional approvals and branch protections are needed? |
| Claude Code and Anthropic commercial services | Anthropic distinguishes commercial from consumer data handling. Its July 1, 2026 commercial policy describes general deletion of API inputs and outputs within 30 days, subject to exceptions; Claude Code ZDR eligibility depends on commercial API credentials or Claude Enterprise with ZDR enabled. | Which account and access route will developers use? Does the contract include ZDR? Which features, model classes, metrics, transcripts, or logs are outside the applicable retention arrangement? |
| Amazon Q Developer | AWS says the service stores questions, responses, and additional context, and documents tier- and feature-specific regional treatment. AWS assigns customers responsibility for content control and service configuration under its shared responsibility model. | What tier and AWS region will the team use? What context is stored for each feature? Which IAM restrictions and service configurations are required? |
| Cursor | Cursor says prompts and code context go to model providers; Privacy Mode addresses training use. Cloud Agents store encrypted repository copies temporarily during a run, and some models have retention exceptions. | Is Privacy Mode enabled for every relevant user? Which provider and model receive data? Will Cloud Agents be allowed? Which current model exceptions apply, and do they require administrator approval? |
Recheck vendor documentation and contractual terms during procurement: tiers, settings, model coverage, and agent capabilities can change. Feature descriptions alone do not establish which product delivers better security results.

Run a controlled pilot using a representative but bounded set of repositories and tasks. Define success and stop conditions before enabling a candidate so that the team can compare practical value and risk, not just the quality of a few impressive demonstrations.
- Choose representative work. Include common tasks from the team’s codebase and workflows, along with relevant languages and frameworks. Compare candidates on the same task set where practical.
- Set the boundary first. Specify approved repositories and data, configure privacy and administrative controls, scope credentials and agent permissions, and decide which actions require approval.
- Keep existing checks active. Continue normal code review, tests, dependency controls, and security scanning. Review generated changes before merging.
- Record both benefits and risks. Track task success, developer friction, corrections, review effort, introduced defects, policy exceptions, unexpected data flows, agent actions, and whether logs provide enough visibility.
- Make a conditional decision. Approve only the features, users, repositories, and permissions that met your requirements. Document unresolved risks and the owner responsible for accepting or addressing them.
Workflow fit includes IDE and source-control integrations, context retrieval, accessibility, latency, and the amount of correction developers need to do. Check performance on your own languages and frameworks rather than inferring it from broad availability; GitHub’s product material notes that some languages are more represented in public repositories than others. Vendor documentation can explain stated features and safeguards, but it does not establish comparative pilot results for your team.
