Compare an AI search service’s regular search logs, AI prompts, account links, model-improvement use, and deletion rules separately. A provider’s privacy policy describes its stated practices; it is not an independent audit, and a privacy control may cover one feature but not another.
What “private” means for AI search
Privacy is not a single setting. A service might avoid attaching ordinary search records to a person while retaining AI conversation state, or let users opt out of model improvement without changing how long account records remain. Compare each practice on its own rather than relying on a general “private” label.

- Collection: What query text, prompts, feedback, and technical details does the service collect?
- Linkability: Can records be associated with an account, device, IP address, or another identifier?
- Use: Can activity improve products or train generative AI models?
- Retention and deletion: How long are account records and conversation state kept, and what happens when you delete them?
- Controls: Which setting changes which use, and does it apply to both conventional search and AI features?
The distinctions matter because a conventional search query and a prompt sent to an AI answer feature may travel through different systems and follow different retention rules.

What each policy tells you—and what it does not
Brave separates search records from Ask Brave conversations
Brave describes de-identified data collection for Search and a separate short inactivity-based retention rule for Ask Brave. Its privacy notice says: “To ensure that Brave Search is relevant, useful, and secure, we collect and store de-identified search query data which includes the plain text of the search query itself, the device platform, operating system, country, language and the date.” Read the statement carefully: de-identified does not mean no query text is stored. The notice says additional data linking that stored query data to an individual, device, or IP address is not stored, while also describing temporary IP processing for service integrity.
Brave describes its Answer with AI feature as providing concise answers based solely on web search results and citing sources so users can assess trustworthiness. That is a description of how the feature answers, not a promise about prompt retention. See Brave’s Search product page alongside its privacy notice when evaluating the service.

Google’s training control is tied to Search Services History
Google’s help page describes a link between saved Search Services History and service improvement, including generative AI model training. Its stated opt-out stops future activity from being used for training unless you provide feedback. That exception means the setting should not be interpreted as a universal ban on every activity you send Google or every other use of Search Services History.

Perplexity’s FAQ gives an account deletion window
Perplexity’s FAQ connects query and feedback use for AI learning with an “AI Data Usage” account setting, and separately gives a retention window for personal information after account deletion. An opt-out from AI learning should not be assumed to delete existing account information or conversation history; the FAQ’s statements address different questions. Because the cited FAQ may be out of date, verify the setting label and policy in your account before relying on it.
A practical checklist before using a service
- Open the current privacy notice and account controls. Check the date or current wording, your region, and the plan or edition you use. Do not assume that a setting or policy description applies identically across regions and product versions.
- Inspect search and AI features separately. Find the terms for ordinary search queries, AI prompts, conversations, and feedback. If the policy does not explain one of these, treat that handling as unstated rather than assuming it matches another feature.
- Check what can identify or link activity. Look for account association, device or IP processing, and whether identifiers are removed, retained temporarily, or used for service integrity. “De-identified” alone does not tell you whether query text is kept.
- Find the model-improvement setting and its scope. Confirm whether an opt-out prevents future use, whether it covers prompts as well as searches, and whether feedback is an exception. Save or review the setting after account or product changes.
- Read deletion and retention terms separately. Distinguish automatic conversation expiry, saved history, shared links, and account deletion. A short conversation-retention period is not the same as deleting all account records.
- Decide based on your actual query. For sensitive, regulated, or third-party information, check applicable organizational rules and current service terms instead of relying on a consumer privacy toggle. Avoid entering details you are not permitted to disclose.
How to make the choice
Choose according to the privacy property you need, not a broad claim that one engine is “private.” If your priority is limiting account linkage, scrutinize identifier handling. If it is preventing model improvement use, locate the explicit opt-out and its exceptions. If it is limiting stored conversations, compare the conversation-specific expiry and sharing rules. The published policies cited here provide useful distinctions, but do not establish an independently verified privacy winner.
