If Claude is not available where you live, choose a coding assistant by first confirming the access issue, then matching an alternative to your country, account, IDE, task, and organization’s data rules. GitHub Copilot is worth considering for editor-native suggestions, OpenAI Codex for agent-style work across several interfaces, and Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise for eligible Google Cloud organizations. None is a universal substitute: confirm current regional and plan eligibility before paying or moving code.
First, confirm why Claude is unavailable
Anthropic maintains a country list for Claude; its Help Center page was dated March 16, 2026. Check the current list rather than assuming that an error means your country is unsupported. An account restriction, network problem, or temporary service issue can have a different cause from country eligibility.

Then confirm that the alternative you are considering is available for your country and account type. Product access can differ by plan, workspace, and feature, and a provider’s general presence in a region does not establish that every coding product is available there.
Choose by the work you want the assistant to do
Inline suggestions inside your editor: consider GitHub Copilot
Copilot may fit if you want code suggestions as you work in an existing editor and GitHub workflow. GitHub lists inline suggestions across a range of editors, but chat support is narrower: its Copilot FAQ says chat is currently available only in VS Code, JetBrains, and Visual Studio. Check support for your specific editor and the feature you need instead of treating editor support as all-or-nothing.

GitHub also warns that public code may contain insecure patterns, bugs, or outdated APIs, and that Copilot can produce such patterns. Review suggestions for correctness and security before accepting them.
Multi-step coding tasks across interfaces: consider OpenAI Codex
OpenAI describes Codex as an agent for writing, reviewing, and shipping code. Depending on your setup, its entry points include desktop, CLI, an IDE extension, and the web. This can suit developers who want more than inline completion, but the right route depends on whether you want work to run locally or be delegated to the cloud.
Rank #2
Check your account plan, rollout status, workspace permissions, and the data controls that apply to your account. OpenAI’s Codex plan and access guidance describes eligibility and workflow distinctions; Codex Cloud access is narrower and can depend on rollout and workspace settings.
Google Cloud organization use: consider Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise
For eligible organizations already using Google Cloud, Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise may be a better fit than a consumer coding tier. Google’s overview of Gemini Code Assist describes enterprise capabilities including private-code customization and broader Google Cloud integrations. Verify the subscription and controls your organization actually has before choosing it.
Consumer access changed on June 18, 2026: Google ended Gemini Code Assist IDE extension and Gemini CLI requests for individual, Google AI Pro, and Google AI Ultra tiers, directing affected users to Antigravity. Google says Standard and Enterprise subscriptions remain unchanged. See Google’s Gemini Code Assist update and product documentation for the relevant terms.
Migration from affected consumer Google coding tools: investigate Antigravity
Google points affected individual Gemini Code Assist and Gemini CLI users to Antigravity. Treat it as a migration route to investigate, not as a guaranteed replacement in every country: the available information here does not establish country-by-country access. Check its current availability, features, quotas, and subscription terms before relying on it.

Compare the candidates against your constraints
| Option | Best fit to investigate | Verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot | Inline suggestions in an existing supported editor and GitHub workflow. | Your editor and required feature; chat is currently limited to VS Code, JetBrains, and Visual Studio, according to GitHub. Review generated code for correctness and security. |
| OpenAI Codex | Agent-style writing, review, or shipping tasks, with desktop, CLI, IDE extension, or web entry points. | Plan eligibility, rollout, workspace permissions, and whether local work or Codex Cloud fits your needs. OpenAI’s guidance notes narrower Codex Cloud eligibility. |
| Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise | Eligible Google Cloud teams that need IDE assistance and organization controls. | Confirm the subscription and migration path. Google says these subscriptions remain unchanged after the June 18, 2026 consumer-tier change; Enterprise adds private-code customization and broader Google Cloud integrations. See Google’s update and overview. |
| Antigravity | Affected individual Gemini Code Assist or Gemini CLI users considering Google’s directed migration path. | Confirm present country access, features, quotas, and subscription terms; country-by-country availability is not established here. See Google’s update. |

- Execution and data: Does the work run locally or in the cloud, and do the data controls meet your privacy needs?
- Organization policy: Can your employer or client approve sending the relevant code to this service?
- Workflow cost: Check current plan terms, usage limits, and migration effort. Do not assume that an available feature is included in your plan.
Test a candidate safely before moving a real project
- Confirm eligibility: Check the provider’s current country, account, and plan requirements, along with any workspace restrictions.
- Use a non-sensitive example: Try a small task representative of your work without sharing proprietary code or secrets.
- Inspect the change: Read the full diff, verify assumptions and dependencies, and reject code you cannot explain.
- Run checks: Run the project’s tests and relevant security checks before merging or deploying generated changes.
- Review data settings and policy: Confirm what the service does with your code and whether your workplace permits its use.
Do not treat a plausible answer as verified code. Google’s Gemini Code Assist documentation says the tool can produce output that seems plausible but is factually incorrect and recommends validating output before use. GitHub’s warning about insecure patterns makes review, testing, and security checks important with Copilot as well.

Do not infer coding-tool access from a different Google product
Google says its Gemini web app is available in over 230 countries and territories and more than 70 languages, according to its Gemini app availability page accessed in 2026. Those figures describe the web app, not Gemini Code Assist or Antigravity. Google also notes that mobile availability can differ. Check the specific coding product’s current eligibility rather than using the web app’s reach as a proxy.
No comparable official performance statistic establishes that one of these options is universally faster, more accurate, or more productive. The useful choice is the one you can access, use in your workflow, and review safely.
