Choose an AI assistant by testing it against the work you actually need done—not by picking a supposed overall winner. Compare how it handles your drafts, whether its research links let you verify claims, whether it can analyze or create images, and whether those tools are available on your account. Official product pages document features and limits, but they do not establish a universal winner for writing or research quality.
Start with the tasks you need it to do
Write down two or three representative tasks before comparing tools. For example: revise a report while keeping your tone, find recent sources for a question, explain a chart you upload, or create a new illustration. A shortlist based on those tasks is more useful than a feature checklist detached from your workflow.

- Writing: Do you need a first draft, a rewrite, feedback, or hands-on editing in a long document?
- Research: Do you need current web information, a multi-step investigation, or simply help organizing material you already have?
- Images: Do you want the assistant to interpret an image you provide, generate a new image, or edit an existing one?
- Context: Does the task require your own files or connected services, and can the tool access them under your account settings?
Then check each candidate’s official feature page and your own account. Availability can depend on plan, region, settings, workspace configuration, and rollout; a feature listed in documentation may not be available in every account.
Compare writing workflows with the same real draft
Writing features describe how you can work with an assistant, not how good its prose will be for your needs. ChatGPT documents drafting, rewriting, summarizing, creative suggestions, and Canvas, an interactive space for co-writing and editing. Those capabilities may suit someone who wants to revise text collaboratively, but they are not evidence that it will produce the best result for every writer. Test the same representative passage in each assistant you are considering. Ask for a specific revision—such as making it clearer for a non-specialist without changing the meaning—and judge the result against your original. Look at accuracy, whether the edits solve the stated problem, control over voice and format, and how much cleanup remains. Try a longer document too if that is part of your work. A polished sample alone does not establish how well a tool will fit your ongoing editing process.
For research, check both freshness and evidence
Research has two separate questions: can the assistant find current material, and can you inspect where its claims came from? A fluent summary is not proof. Open the cited pages and confirm that important claims are supported there and that the source date is appropriate to the question.

- Claude: Anthropic documents web search for answers that benefit from current information, as well as a multi-step Research feature that can search the web and, when available, connected internal context such as Google Workspace. When you compare results, note whether sources are visible and easy to open, whether they support the specific claims, and whether the workflow handles the number of steps your question requires. Citations help you verify an answer; they do not guarantee that the answer is complete or correct.

An assistant may be able to understand an uploaded image without generating a finished image asset. Before choosing a tool, identify the operation you need: interpreting a photo or chart, creating an image from a prompt, or editing an existing image.

- ChatGPT: OpenAI lists both image input and image generation among ChatGPT’s capabilities. Access to tools depends on subscription level and settings; consult the capabilities overview and your account.
- Gemini: Google’s documentation describes tiered access, and availability of media-generation features can depend on plan and usage. Check the current Gemini limits and upgrades page and the features shown in your account before relying on a particular image operation.
- Claude: Anthropic’s Help Center states, “Claude doesn’t generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do.” That statement concerns producing finished image assets; it does not rule out asking Claude to discuss or help plan an image. If your preferred assistant lacks one operation, using a separate tool for image generation or another part of the workflow can be practical. Treat that as a task-based choice, not a vendor-recommended setup or a claim that one combination is universally better.

Feature availability and limits can change. OpenAI says access to ChatGPT tools depends on subscription level and settings. Google documents tiered access: Deep Research has daily and simultaneous-request limits, with higher tiers receiving higher report limits; the plan page also notes that some features, including media generation and Deep Research, use more of the available allowance. Anthropic describes Research as a beta feature for individuals on paid Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plans, available on web, desktop, and mobile. Web search must be enabled. Research uses the same conversation limits as regular Claude conversations and may consume them faster. Confirm current availability and account conditions in Anthropic’s Research help. These plan and usage details are not interchangeable across providers, so compare the limits that apply to your own account rather than assuming a feature is included because it appears on a product page.

A practical way to make the final choice
- Choose representative tasks. Pick a draft, a current-information question, and an image operation only if each is part of your actual workload.
- Verify access. Check the official feature pages and your account for the exact tool, plan, region, workspace, and usage conditions.
- Run a fair writing trial. Give each shortlisted assistant the same draft and instructions. Compare factual fidelity, tone control, usefulness of edits, and the amount of repair required.
- Audit research results. Ask for citations or source links, open them, and check key claims against the cited material and its date.
- Test the precise image operation. Use an uploaded image if you need analysis; try the creation or editing workflow if you need a new or changed asset.
- Choose for fit, not a universal ranking. If no single assistant covers your tasks well, combine tools where it makes sense, and recheck access and usage before relying on that workflow.
