Start by deciding what outcome you want
Before changing a toggle, identify which data outcome matters. A chatbot may keep a conversation out of visible history but retain it temporarily for safety; it may stop future chats from being used for model improvement while preserving existing history; and deleting a chat may not remove separately stored files or information already reviewed for safety.

- Stop future training use: Find the model-improvement or activity control. Check whether it applies to new chats only and whether feedback creates an exception.
- Keep a chat out of visible history: Use the service’s temporary or incognito mode where available. Check how long the provider retains temporary chats.
- Remove saved chats: Delete them, rather than archiving or merely turning off training. Check the provider’s backend deletion window and any exceptions.
- Limit personalization: Review memory, custom instructions, connected apps, and other settings that may supply information to a chat.
- Control account-level retention: If this is a work or school account, check administrator policy; personal settings may not be available or decisive.
These controls are not interchangeable. Choose based on the data you want retained, not the reassuring-sounding label on a switch.

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub was last updated September 24, 2026. The other periods in the table are provider-stated policy windows, not assurances of immediate erasure or independent measurements.
ChatGPT: separate training, history, memory, and files
Turn off model improvement for new conversations
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. On the web, open the account menu, then Settings and Data controls. On mobile, open the sidebar or profile, then Settings and Data controls. Availability can depend on plan, sign-in status, and workspace settings; for signed-out use, the choice is saved in that browser.
This setting affects model-training use of new conversations. It does not hide or delete chats already saved in history. If you send thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, the associated conversation may be used for training despite opting out.

Use Temporary Chat only for the history and memory outcomes it provides
Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary. OpenAI may retain them for up to 30 days for safety. A Temporary Chat may still use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins if personalization is active; turn personalization off when starting the chat if you do not want those features used. Saving the temporary chat converts it into a regular chat.
Delete chats and related files separately
Deleting a saved chat removes it from your account view immediately. OpenAI says permanent deletion is scheduled within 30 days, except where data has already been de-identified or disassociated, or must be retained longer for security or legal obligations. Archiving only hides the chat.
Check for files stored outside the conversation. Library files may remain after you delete the chat and must be deleted in Library separately. Project files persist until the project or file is deleted, or a workspace retention rule applies.

Consider access for safety, support, and legal purposes
OpenAI says authorized personnel or trusted providers may access content when needed for abuse or security investigations, support, legal matters, or model improvement unless the user has opted out. Its guidance is direct: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.”

Gemini Apps: understand Keep Activity and its connected settings
Review activity controls on a personal account
Manage Gemini Apps Activity in the Gemini app or web app, or use the linked My Activity controls. On the web, Google describes the path as Menu > Settings & help > Activity. Google says Keep Activity is on by default for adults. When on, chats and shared content may be saved to activity, and Google may use saved activity to provide, develop, and improve services, including training generative AI models.
The default auto-delete period is 18 months. In the activity controls, users can choose 3 months, 36 months, or no auto-delete.

Know what Keep Activity off does—and does not do
Turning Keep Activity off stops future chats from appearing in Activity and from being used to train AI models unless you submit feedback. It does not mean immediate erasure: Google says those chats remain associated with the account for up to 72 hours for service, feedback processing, and safety. Google also says other settings, including Web & App Activity and Location History, may continue independently.
Temporary Chats have the same stated 72-hour retention window. Google says they are not used to train its AI models, but still uses chats to respond and help protect users and the public. Feedback can result in chat context and uploads being used for improvement.
Account for human review and other Google services
Google says that activity saved while Keep Activity is on may be reviewed by humans to develop and improve services. Reviewed data is disconnected from the account and retained for up to three years; deleting activity does not delete data that has already been reviewed. Google also states: “Even if your Keep activity setting is off or you use temporary chats, Google still uses your chats to respond to you and help protect Google, our users and the public, including with help from human reviewers.”

Changing Gemini Activity does not erase data held by other Google services. Disabling activity can also limit Connected Apps, whose source data and deletion behavior may be separate.

Delete a consumer chat or use Incognito
Claude consumer users can delete chats. They disappear from visible history immediately and Anthropic says backend deletion occurs within 30 days. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled; the cited consumer policy does not specify a separate Incognito deletion period.
Check whether training use is enabled
If a consumer allows chats or coding sessions to improve Claude, Anthropic may retain data in de-identified form for up to five years in model-training pipelines. Turning the setting off prevents future training use, but cannot pull data out of a training run already underway or remove information from an already-trained model.
Other stated retention windows apply to particular cases: up to two years for flagged policy-violating inputs or outputs, up to seven years for safety classification scores, and five years for feedback-associated data. Legal, dispute, and policy-enforcement needs can also affect retention.
Managed, work, school, and commercial accounts need a separate check
Do not assume consumer settings govern an account supplied by an employer, school, or organization. Administrators and contracts can determine who controls activity, retention, access, and deletion.
- OpenAI: Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API content is not used to improve models by default. Organization retention, access, memory, and compliance controls still apply.
- Google: Workspace administrators may control work or school account settings, and users may be unable to change retention choices themselves.
- Anthropic API: Inputs and outputs are generally deleted from backend systems within 30 days, with exceptions for longer-retention services, zero-data-retention terms, policy enforcement, or legal requirements.
- Claude Enterprise: Owners can configure chat and project retention in Organization settings > Data and Privacy, with a 30-day minimum. The timing is based on last activity. Project retention overrides chat retention, and projects default to indefinite retention unless a custom project period is set. Deleted data cannot be recovered; audit logs record retention changes and deletion events.
For a managed account, ask the administrator which policy applies, whether it overrides user choices, and how to request deletion. Review the applicable organization policy or contract rather than relying on a consumer help page.

A practical setup sequence
- Identify the account type. Confirm whether you are using a personal account, signed-out session, work or school account, Enterprise workspace, or API integration.
- Choose your training preference. Turn off the model-improvement or activity setting if you do not want eligible future chats used for training. Check feedback exceptions and the setting’s scope.
- Decide whether saved history is acceptable. If not, use temporary or incognito mode where available, and check the provider’s residual retention window before entering information.
- Review personalization separately. Check memory, custom instructions, Connected Apps, and plugins. A training opt-out does not necessarily disable these features.
- Delete what you no longer need. Delete conversations rather than archiving them. Check for associated Library or project files and, in Gemini, activity and separately stored Google service data.
- Check administrator rules and exceptions. For managed accounts, confirm the organization’s retention and access policy. Consider safety, feedback, legal, and policy-enforcement exceptions for any account.
- Keep highly sensitive information out if review is unacceptable. A setting may reduce use or history without preventing service processing, safety retention, or human review.
