How to Choose a Zero Trust Network Segmentation Platform

Choose a zero trust network segmentation platform by fitting its enforcement architecture and identity context to your workloads, then test coverage, operations and cost in a bounded pilot.

Choose a platform by matching its enforcement method, identity context and workload coverage to the systems and traffic you need to protect. Then verify integrations, policy operations, visibility, resilience and lifecycle cost in a bounded pilot. Network segmentation can support a zero trust architecture, but segmentation alone does not establish zero trust.

What zero trust changes about segmentation

Zero trust shifts protection away from assuming that a resource is safe because it sits inside a trusted network. NIST’s SP 800-207, published in August 2020, describes zero trust as focused on protecting resources—including assets, services, workflows and network accounts—rather than network segments. Authentication and authorization of the subject and device take place before a session to an enterprise resource is established.

That distinction matters when choosing a segmentation platform: a product may restrict communication between systems, but the buyer still needs to decide how identity and request context affect access. Treat segmentation as one possible enforcement technique in a broader architecture, not as proof that the architecture is zero trust.

Which enforcement approach fits your environment?

NIST describes both resource-specific segments protected by gateways and host-based microsegmentation using software agents or endpoint firewalls. For cloud-native applications, identity-based controls may also involve API gateways, sidecar proxies and application identity infrastructure. These patterns can coexist; the right choice depends on asset coverage, enforcement location and operational constraints.

Approach What to verify Where it may fit
Gateway-enforced segments Which traffic crosses the gateway, what happens if it is unavailable, and how policies map to resources. Resources or groups of related resources that can be protected at a network boundary.
Host-based microsegmentation Supported operating systems, agent or endpoint-firewall requirements, and how unmanaged or agent-ineligible assets are handled. Workloads where enforcement needs to be applied on the host rather than only at a shared boundary.
Cloud-native identity controls How application and service identities are issued and mapped, and whether policy can span clusters and cloud environments. Distributed applications whose access rules need more context than IP addresses, subnets or perimeter location.
Hybrid enforcement How policies, logs, identities and failure behavior are coordinated across enforcement points. Estates with a mix of on-premises, cloud-native and legacy systems, if the candidate demonstrates coverage across the actual scope.

NIST SP 800-207A, published in September 2023, describes a shift from controls based only on network parameters such as IP addresses, subnets and perimeters toward identities. For cloud-native and multi-cloud workloads, check whether the platform can express application and service identity alongside network and user attributes—not just whether it supports multiple deployment locations.

Build a shortlist around your requirements

Write requirements before vendor demonstrations, and separate mandatory capabilities from scored preferences and informational questions. Evaluate the candidate against your own assets, traffic, operating model and compliance obligations rather than relying on a universal ranking.

Coverage and policy context

  • Asset coverage: Confirm support for the operating systems, virtual machines, cloud workloads, containers and legacy systems in scope. Ask how unmanaged assets and systems that cannot run an agent are treated.
  • Enforcement architecture: Identify whether rules are enforced by host agents, gateways, native cloud controls or a combination. Document component dependencies and what users and applications experience when a component or control plane is unavailable.
  • Identity and context: Check whether policies can use workload or service identity as well as IP, subnet, user, device and environmental context. Ask how identities are issued, mapped and kept current across environments.
  • Discovery and policy design: Determine whether the platform observes flows, maps dependencies, identifies policy owners and helps distinguish required communications from unexplained traffic. Ask how recommendations are validated before enforcement.

Integration, visibility and operations

  • Integration: Inventory the identity, endpoint, cloud, firewall, SIEM, SOAR, ticketing and configuration systems that must interoperate. Verify available interfaces and API documentation, not just a general integration claim.
  • Visibility and auditability: Check whether operators can explain why a connection was allowed or blocked, review policy changes, export logs and demonstrate how controls operated. Set log-retention and evidence requirements in advance.
  • Rollout and resilience: Ask whether the platform supports simulation or alert-only operation, staged enforcement, change approvals, rollback and exception handling. Validate service impact and failure modes in your environment.
  • Operating ownership: Decide who writes and approves policies, handles exceptions, reviews changes and responds to incidents. Evaluate training, documentation and support against that staffing model.

Compliance, cost and future fit

  • Compliance: Request evidence relevant to your required frameworks and geography, then assess it against your own obligations. Applicable requirements vary by organization.
  • Total cost: Include the licensing metric and protected-asset count, modules, infrastructure, deployment services, training, support and ongoing policy operations. License price alone does not capture the effort to maintain rules and integrations.
  • Exit and future changes: Verify whether policies, identity mappings and logs can be exported, and what changes if you move cloud, endpoint or network platforms. Confirm portability technically and contractually.

These criteria reflect the General Services Administration’s Zero Trust Architecture Buyer’s Guide, Version 3.0 (February 2024), which advises buyers to assess interoperability, scalability, threat protection, user experience, compliance, support, training, total cost and futureproofing. Use those areas as prompts for evidence, not as assumptions that every product performs them equally well.

Evaluate candidates with a staged pilot

A pilot should test whether the platform works with your dependencies and operating processes—not merely whether a demonstration can show a policy being created. NIST’s NCCoE implementation work includes discovery of resources, assets and communication flows, but it does not provide a comparative product test for your organization.

  1. Set scope and outcomes. Name the applications, sensitive resources, environments, threat scenarios, availability requirements and compliance constraints. Establish a baseline and practical measures such as the share of in-scope assets discovered, validated policy coverage, exception count and time to investigate a denied flow. Do not treat segmentation as a guarantee of breach prevention.
  2. Map assets and dependencies. Inventory systems and observed communications, identify application owners, and separate business-required traffic from unexplained flows. Resolve ownership questions and stale dependencies before writing broad allow rules.
  3. Compare architecture fits. Match the shortlist’s enforcement methods and supported assets to the estate. For cloud-native services, test how each candidate represents service identity and applies policy across clusters and clouds.
  4. Test representative workloads first. Select bounded, non-critical workloads. Observe flows, review proposed rules with owners, and exercise logs, exceptions and staged enforcement. Include rollback and recovery in the test plan.
  5. Measure operating effort. Record policy changes, false positives, exception reviews, upgrades, support needs and integration maintenance alongside licensing and deployment costs.
  6. Record evidence and gaps. For each requirement, note where it was demonstrated, which environments remain uncovered and what assumptions or compensating controls remain. Make the final decision through the organization’s risk and compliance process.

Use zero trust frameworks for planning, not product rankings

CISA’s Zero Trust Maturity Model Version 2, dated April 2023, offers a roadmap across five pillars: identity, devices, networks, applications and workloads, and data, with cross-cutting capabilities. It can help an organization identify gaps and priorities; it is not a vendor score or certification.

NIST’s NCCoE implementation guide describes 19 interoperable, open-standards-based zero trust architecture implementations built by NIST and collaborators using commercially available technology in laboratory environments. The examples include enhanced identity governance, software-defined perimeter, microsegmentation and SASE. They illustrate possible architectures, not 19 independently tested segmentation products or a comparative ranking. The project covers conventional enterprise IT and excludes OT and IoT, so organizations with those environments need additional specialized guidance.

Neither these frameworks nor example implementations establish that a particular commercial platform is certified, superior or suitable for your estate. Use them to frame architecture questions, then base selection on documented product evidence and your own pilot.
