For a typical 24/7 YouTube stream, use the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key supplied by YouTube, then set your encoder to a YouTube-supported codec, constant bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Test the complete setup with realistic audio and motion and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. You usually do not need to operate a separate ingest server between your encoder and YouTube.
First, clarify what “ingest server” means
YouTube provides the destination that receives your live feed. In YouTube’s setup, your encoder sends video and audio to a server URL using a stream key; YouTube’s LiveStreams API also describes primary and backup ingestion addresses. Depending on the encoder, you may enter the URL and key in separate fields or combine them as the encoder expects. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide and the LiveStreams API reference.

A different design is to put your own relay, contribution server, or other intermediary between your encoder and YouTube. That is a separate system to operate; YouTube’s documented workflow does not make an intermediary server a general requirement for stable delivery.

Choose the protocol that fits your stream
| Protocol | When it fits | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | A strong default for ordinary live content when the encoder supports it, particularly when low latency matters. YouTube describes it as RTMP over an SSL connection. | For an RTMPS implementation, the encoder must use a valid YouTube endpoint and handle TLS/SNI correctly. YouTube’s implementation guide specifies port 443. |
| RTMP | A supported option for H.264 and normal, low, or ultra-low latency modes in YouTube’s protocol comparison. | The comparison identifies plain RTMP as unencrypted in transit. |
| HLS or DASH | Consider these when their codec, resolution, or workflow characteristics suit your production. | YouTube’s comparison describes them as encrypted, with generally higher latency than RTMP-based ingestion. HLS uses segmented delivery; do not assume either protocol is automatically more reliable. |
For most ordinary always-on feeds, choose RTMPS if your encoder supports it and you do not need an HLS- or DASH-specific workflow. This is a practical default based on YouTube’s stated protocol use cases, not an uptime guarantee. See YouTube’s RTMPS guide and its ingestion protocol comparison.

Set encoder output to match YouTube and your connection
Use supported encoding settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe frequency, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. Its guidance supports up to 60 fps. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations when configuring a particular encoder.
Use a bitrate recommendation as a starting point, not a guarantee
The following are YouTube-recommended video bitrates; they are not a promise that a given internet connection can sustain the stream. The current YouTube help table does not display a publication date.

| Output mode | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|

| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
Run an upload speed test and choose an output that remains reliable on your actual connection. YouTube does not prescribe a universal upload-headroom percentage for 24/7 streaming, so do not treat a fixed margin as an official requirement. If the connection cannot sustain your selected bitrate consistently, lower the output settings and test again.

YouTube’s LiveStreams resource provides primary and backup ingestion addresses, and its RTMPS guide includes a backup address field for implementations that support dual ingestion. If your encoder can send both feeds simultaneously, configure the backup address according to its instructions and test the arrangement. The existence of a backup address alone does not establish that your encoder will fail over, or that delivery will continue without interruption.

For an always-on operation, consider the local failure points separately: the encoder, its power, and the internet connection can each stop a locally generated stream. A UPS or a backup internet connection may help with particular failures, but YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not require a specific device, ISP arrangement, or service-level plan. It also does not publish a universal failover time or 24/7 uptime guarantee.
Test the whole path before relying on it
- Use YouTube’s stream URL and key. In the encoder’s stream settings, enter the server URL and stream key shown for your YouTube stream. Confirm the protocol you selected is supported by both the encoder and the YouTube endpoint.
- Match the planned output. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval. For RTMP/RTMPS audio, use AAC or MP3 as supported by your encoder and YouTube’s guidance.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and movement similar to the actual program, rather than testing only a static image or silent screen. Check that the feed appears as expected in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Watch stream health and messages. YouTube advises monitoring stream health during the event and reviewing its messages. Resolve warnings about settings such as keyframe cadence or mismatched primary and backup frame rates before relying on continuous delivery.
- Test recovery and redundancy, if configured. Verify your encoder’s reconnect behavior and confirm what happens if the primary path is interrupted. Do not assume a particular recovery time; the reviewed YouTube material does not specify a universal target.
YouTube’s API distinguishes an incoming feed (liveStream) from the viewer-facing event (liveBroadcast); those resources can be associated. That distinction matters if you manage streams programmatically, but it does not change the basic encoder setup. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

Troubleshoot common ingest problems
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Verify the exact server URL and stream key in the encoder, and confirm the selected protocol and endpoint are compatible. | Re-enter the credentials from YouTube’s stream settings and run a short test while watching Live Control Room. |
| Stream health reports a keyframe or settings issue | Check that the encoder is using CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and review the specific warning. | Correct the encoder setting and retest. If sending primary and backup feeds, check that their frame rates match. |
| Video or audio is unstable | Compare the chosen bitrate with a fresh upload speed test and check whether the test includes realistic motion and audio. | Try a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that the connection can sustain, then observe stream health again. |
| Primary/backup behavior is unclear | Confirm that the encoder supports simultaneous dual ingestion and that both addresses are configured as intended. | Test the configured path rather than assuming that the presence of a backup URL guarantees automatic failover. |
| The stream stops when local equipment or connectivity fails | Identify which local component stopped: encoder, power, or internet connection. | Plan for the specific dependency; YouTube’s ingest addresses do not remove local failure points or establish an uptime guarantee. |
Keep rights and channel rules in the operating plan
A technically healthy ingest does not establish that you have permission to stream the video or audio. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s rules for live streams and monetization before putting a continuous feed on a channel. Repeating material does not by itself establish that it is permitted or eligible for monetization. StreamNeo provides a copyright safety checklist to help creators review rights considerations.
