Choose a WordPress translation plugin by matching its workflow and architecture to your site—not by picking a universal “best” plugin. First decide who will translate and approve content, where translations will live, how language URLs and SEO should work, which theme and extensions must be covered, and what the recurring cost will be at your actual word and language volume. Then test the exact setup on staging before migrating a live site.
The practical choice is usually among database-based plugins, visual editing tools, hosted translation proxies, JavaScript widgets, and WordPress Multisite arrangements. Each can be suitable, but they differ in portability, indexing, commerce support, integration depth, and operating cost.

Start with the workflow your team can actually maintain
A translation plugin is part of your publishing system. Before comparing features, answer four operational questions:
- Who writes? Internal editors, freelance translators, an agency, or a mixture?
- Who reviews? Can a subject-matter expert revise machine output before publication?
- How often does content change? A frequently updated store needs a different process from a small brochure site.
- What must be translated? Public pages are only one part of a WordPress installation; menus, forms, checkout screens, emails, metadata, custom fields, and theme strings may also matter.
For a small site with one editor and a few languages, a manual workflow may be sufficient. A publishing team may need assignment, status tracking, translator accounts, and machine-translation review. A company operating independent regional sites may prefer separate WordPress installations instead of one database containing every language.

Write the workflow down before buying. Otherwise, an inexpensive plugin can become costly when editors have to copy text between systems, engineers must repair untranslated strings, or a service subscription grows with every word on the site.
The seven-point selection checklist
1. Translation and review workflow
Determine whether the product supports the way translations are produced. Manual translation should let editors create and revise language versions without overwriting the original. If you use machine translation, check whether output can be edited in WordPress and whether untranslated or changed source content is clearly flagged.
Teams should look for translation-management features: assigning work, identifying the source language, tracking completion, and involving external translators or connected services. A visual editor can be faster for page-level copy, while a side-by-side editor may be safer for long pages or structured content. Ask how the system handles revisions: when an English paragraph changes, does the translated paragraph become stale, get marked for review, or silently remain unchanged?

2. Where translations live and how portable they are
Architecture determines your exit options. In a database model, language content and relationships are stored in WordPress. A hosted proxy processes or serves translated output outside your WordPress installation. A Multisite model keeps each language on a separate site and links corresponding pages.
Before committing, document what remains if the plugin or service is disabled. Can you export translated post content, taxonomies, slugs, and metadata? Do translated URLs disappear, redirect, or become ordinary source-language pages? Does a proxy subscription control whether visitors can still see translated pages? Ask for a migration procedure and test it on a copy, not just a promise that data is “portable.”
3. URLs, metadata, and indexing
Specify the URL format you need—language directories such as /fr/, language subdomains, separate domains, or another structure—and verify that the plugin produces it consistently. Check language selectors, canonical URLs, hreflang relationships, XML sitemaps, translated titles and descriptions, slugs, Open Graph fields, and noindex behavior.
A comparison published by WPML describes baseline multilingual SEO capabilities across the products it reviewed; that is a vendor-authored comparison, not independent testing. Confirm the actual output in your own configuration. Crawl a staging site and inspect page source and response headers in every language. Verify that each translated page is reachable without JavaScript if search indexing is a requirement. A free JavaScript widget may translate what a visitor sees while leaving search engines with one source-language URL.

4. Reach beyond the editor
List every content surface your site uses:
- Block editor, page-builder modules, reusable blocks, and global templates
- Theme options, navigation labels, widgets, and taxonomy names
- Custom fields and structured data
- Forms, validation messages, and confirmation screens
- Pop-ups, cookie notices, and membership interfaces
- Media titles, captions, alt text, and attachment pages
- Notifications and server-side emails
- Plugin-generated strings that appear only in particular states
Do not assume that translating a post translates its form confirmation, email subject, or page-builder template. Build a test inventory and mark each item as translated, manually replaceable, machine-translated, or unsupported.
5. Store and payment requirements
For WooCommerce, test the complete customer journey in every language: shop and category pages, product attributes, variations, stock messages, cart, checkout, account pages, coupons, transactional emails, and order status notices. Verify currency display separately; translation and currency conversion are different functions.
Check payment gateways, tax extensions, subscriptions, bookings, product feeds, and any extension that creates its own strings or endpoints. A plugin may translate core WooCommerce screens while requiring an integration or manual work for a specialized extension. Test logged-in and guest checkout, failed payments, refunds, and email templates on staging.
6. Total cost at your real scale
Calculate cost using your planned number of sites, languages, translated words, translators, machine-translation usage, and renewal period. Include mandatory add-ons and the labor needed to review output. A low entry price is not comparable with a higher plan that already includes translation management or store support.
Recommended Free Tools
Estimate growth as well as the initial launch. Adding a language can increase translated-word counts, proxy fees, editor time, and quality-control work. Record whether each price is one-time, annual, monthly, promotional, or subject to renewal changes.
7. Compatibility and maintenance
Read current compatibility documentation for your theme, page builder, SEO plugin, forms system, custom-field framework, caching layer, and commerce extensions. Confirm the supported WordPress and PHP versions for the release you will run. Re-test after updates: translation plugins interact with URL rewriting, queries, templates, and third-party JavaScript, so an update can affect only one language or one template.
How the main approaches differ
| Option | Documented approach | When it can fit | Checks before adoption |
|---|---|---|---|
| WPML | Core plugin with add-ons; workflows can use AI, the WordPress editor, a side-by-side editor, translators, or connected services. Its CMS and Agency plans include features such as string translation, page-builder support, and WooCommerce support. | Sites needing managed translation workflows, custom integrations, or broad WooCommerce coverage. | Confirm the exact plan, add-ons, supported extensions, and renewal cost. |
| Polylang | Free core plugin for manual multilingual setup. WooCommerce support requires the separate premium Polylang for WooCommerce add-on; the WordPress.org listing describes translated store pages, emails, and product-metadata synchronization. | Editors who want a manual workflow and a free core option. | Price the WooCommerce add-on where needed and test the page builder and custom strings. |
| TranslatePress | Visual front-end editing approach, with free and paid tiers that provide different capabilities. | Editors who prefer translating text in the rendered page context. | Test content not publicly rendered, including notifications and admin-side strings. |
| Weglot | Hosted SaaS proxy that processes rendered HTML. The WPML comparison says translations reside on Weglot’s servers and plans are limited by words and languages. | Teams that accept an external hosted workflow and want to estimate capacity by words and languages. | Model recurring limits, service dependence, proxy behavior, and server-side content coverage. |
| GTranslate | Free JavaScript translation widget, with paid neural-translation options and additional features according to the comparison. | Visitors who need an on-page translation aid and sites that do not require fully indexed translated URLs. | Confirm whether paid features create crawlable, language-specific pages; do not assume the free widget satisfies SEO requirements. |
| MultilingualPress | WordPress Multisite architecture: each language is a separate site connected by a linking layer. | Organizations wanting independent language sites, settings, or publishing operations. | Assess Multisite administration, backups, hosting, domain routing, and whether automatic translation reaches page-builder content. |
These descriptions and conditional fits are drawn primarily from a comparison published by WPML. They are not a neutral ranking, performance benchmark, hands-on test, or measurement of translation quality. Validate every option against your site.

Option-by-option questions to ask
WPML: managed translation in a WordPress-centered workflow
Compare WPML when you need translation management, translator involvement, page-builder handling, or WooCommerce coverage in one WordPress installation. Its documented workflow can combine AI, WordPress editing, side-by-side editing, translators, and connected services. The important question is not whether a feature exists in the product family, but whether your chosen plan includes it or requires an add-on.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ask how string translation is separated from post translation, how custom fields are configured, and how a page-builder template is synchronized. Confirm the plan’s site limit and support period before launch.
Polylang: manual control with a separate WooCommerce purchase
Polylang’s free core can suit a site where editors manually create language versions and do not need a paid management layer. If the site runs WooCommerce, the separate Polylang for WooCommerce add-on is required. The WordPress.org listing states that the add-on handles translated store pages, emails, and product metadata synchronization.
Budget for that add-on, then test variations, checkout, and emails rather than limiting the trial to blog posts. Verify how your page builder and custom fields behave in the editor you use.
TranslatePress: translate in the visual context
TranslatePress is worth considering when editors need to see the rendered page while translating. That context can expose layout-dependent wording and make short marketing pages approachable. The trade-off is coverage: text generated in notifications, administrative screens, scripts, or server-side emails may not appear in the visual editing surface.

During a trial, submit every form, trigger every notification, and inspect dynamic components. Check which capabilities belong to the free tier and which require a paid plan.
Weglot: hosted proxy with capacity limits
Weglot’s documented model is a hosted service that processes rendered HTML. The WPML comparison says translations live on Weglot’s servers and plans are constrained by translated words and languages. This can simplify operations, but it introduces an external dependency and a recurring capacity calculation.

Count words across templates and reusable components, not just published post bodies. Clarify what happens when a plan limit is reached, how server-side content is handled, and what export or shutdown process is available if you leave the service.
GTranslate: distinguish a widget from indexable translations
A free JavaScript widget can provide an immediate visitor-facing translation layer. The comparison describes paid neural-translation options with additional capabilities. If your goal is international search traffic, treat the widget and indexable translated pages as separate requirements.

MultilingualPress: separate sites through WordPress Multisite
MultilingualPress links language-specific sites in a WordPress Multisite network. This architecture can be appropriate when regional teams need independent themes, menus, settings, or release schedules. It also means more operational work: network administration, backups, domain mapping, user permissions, and update coordination.
Test whether your page builder, custom post types, forms, and commerce extensions work across the linked sites. Decide how shared media, analytics, and security policies will be maintained before choosing this model.

Use a written test script rather than checking only a translated product page:
- Create products with attributes, variations, downloadable files, sale prices, and stock states in the source language.
- Translate titles, descriptions, short descriptions, attributes, variation labels, categories, tags, and image text.
- Browse shop, search, category, product, cart, checkout, account, and order-history pages in every language.
- Place successful and failed test orders with each payment gateway and verify tax, shipping, currency, and confirmation screens.
- Trigger new-order, processing, completed, refund, password, and account emails; inspect subjects, body text, and links.
- Check subscriptions, bookings, memberships, feeds, and any extension that adds its own product or checkout fields.
- Clear caches and repeat tests as a guest and as a logged-in customer.
Record any untranslated string and identify whether it belongs to WooCommerce core, the translation plugin, the theme, or another extension. That ownership determines the fix.

Compare equivalent annual totals, not just the first payment. Add translation services, machine-translation usage, extra sites, additional languages, renewal increases, and the editorial hours needed for review. For a hosted service, calculate the words in menus, templates, repeated interface text, and dynamically generated pages.
Run a staging-site compatibility test
A staging test is the fastest way to expose gaps that feature lists miss. Clone the production site or build a representative copy, then follow this sequence:
- Inventory content. Export a list of post types, taxonomies, custom fields, templates, forms, emails, and extensions. Mark which items need translation.
- Configure one secondary language. Use the intended URL structure, language selector, SEO plugin, cache, and analytics settings.
- Translate representative pages. Include a page-builder layout, a long article, a form, a custom-field template, media metadata, and a product if applicable.
- Inspect output. Check URLs, redirects, canonical tags, hreflang, titles, descriptions, slugs, sitemap entries, structured data, and source HTML.
- Exercise interactions. Submit forms, log in, search, add products to the cart, complete checkout, trigger emails, and test validation errors in every language.
- Test updates. Edit the source page, change a template, update an extension, clear caches, and confirm that translated content is flagged or synchronized as expected.
- Test failure and removal. Disable the translation plugin or proxy in staging and document which content, URLs, metadata, and links remain available.
- Measure editorial effort. Time a real translation and review cycle. Include correction of machine output, locating strings, and publishing updates.
Do not move to production until the test has an owner, a written pass/fail record, and a rollback plan. Keep the staging copy available for updates because compatibility can change with a theme, builder, WordPress, or extension release.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
Only visible page text is translated
Cause: the chosen method does not reach strings generated by forms, scripts, emails, or server-side code. Fix: identify the string’s source, use the plugin’s string-translation mechanism when available, and provide a manual replacement or integration for unsupported output.
Translated pages exist but are not discoverable
Cause: the setup relies on a browser widget, incorrect canonical tags, missing sitemap entries, or blocked language URLs. Fix: inspect crawlable HTML, metadata, hreflang, and robots directives for each language; correct routing before launch.
Source edits leave stale translations
Cause: the workflow does not mark changed segments or editors are unaware of synchronization rules. Fix: establish a change-review queue and test paragraph, template, and product edits separately.
Commerce works in one language only
Cause: an extension, gateway, email template, or variation field is outside the tested integration. Fix: run the complete WooCommerce script and isolate the failing component on staging before enabling the language publicly.
Migration removes language content
Cause: translations were stored in a service or in plugin-specific structures that were not exported. Fix: perform a disable-and-restore rehearsal, export what the vendor supports, and document URL redirects and content ownership.
Choose by scenario, not by a universal ranking
- Manual editorial site: Start with a database-based manual workflow such as Polylang’s core option, provided your theme and builder pass testing.
- Team translation with review and WooCommerce: Compare a managed system such as WPML’s relevant CMS or Agency plan, then verify add-ons, site limits, and store extensions.
- Visual marketing pages: Evaluate TranslatePress, but test dynamic, administrative, and notification strings separately.
- Hosted operations: Consider Weglot only after calculating words, languages, recurring limits, external-service dependence, and exit procedures.
- Visitor convenience without a full SEO program: A GTranslate widget may be sufficient; require a different configuration if each language must be indexed.
- Independent regional properties: Consider MultilingualPress when separate sites and settings justify Multisite’s operational complexity.
There is no evidence here for a universal winner. The defensible choice is the one that passes your workflow, URL, content-coverage, commerce, portability, compatibility, and total-cost tests on staging.
