How to Choose a Wireless Speaker for Multi-Room Listening

The right multi-room speaker is one that joins the system your household uses. Check exact model compatibility, streaming support, inputs and whether you need room groups or a stereo pair.

Start with the playback ecosystem, not the speaker’s wireless label. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect and a manufacturer’s own multi-room system describe different capabilities; one does not guarantee that a speaker can join another brand’s room group. Check that the exact model works with the app and speakers your household already uses, then compare its inputs, placement and stereo options.

Choose the multi-room system your household will use

Multi-room listening means sending audio to speakers in different rooms, usually as a synchronized group. The speakers need a shared way to receive and control that audio. Google Home supports playback on combinations of compatible Google speakers, displays, tablets and streaming devices, and lets users select devices or preset groups in the Google Home app. Sonos documents grouping among Sonos players in its system. Neither example means every Wi-Fi speaker can join every group.

Before buying, look up the exact model in the platform’s compatibility information and confirm that it can join the group you want. Google’s guidance covers its compatible devices and group controls; for a third-party speaker, verify its Cast support and the model’s group compatibility rather than inferring it from Wi-Fi alone. Sonos groups are part of the Sonos system. Google Home’s multi-room playback guidance and Sonos’ explanation of how its system works describe these platform-specific approaches.

Check the services and controls you actually use

Make a short list of the phones, music services and controls people in your home use every day. Then check the product specifications for the relevant support: a native speaker app, Google Cast, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect or another listed option. These names are not interchangeable, and support can vary by product and region. Confirm that the model supports the specific service and group playback method you intend to use.

The Audio Pro C5 MkII W and C20 W are examples of models whose manufacturer sheets list Google Cast, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect. Those are stated features, not a guarantee that every service or control behaves identically across models. The sheets are dated September 2025, so check current model documentation before purchase: C5 MkII W specifications and C20 W specifications.

Understand the difference between room groups and stereo pairs

A room group is for playing together across spaces. A stereo pair is for left and right channels from two speakers in one room. If your goal is fuller stereo listening in a living room, check the model’s pairing rules; if you want the same program in several rooms, check its multi-room grouping support. A feature for one use does not establish the other.

Sonos documents stereo pairing between two players of the same type, with one assigned the left channel and the other the right. Audio Pro’s C5 MkII W specifications describe grouping two units as a left/right setup. Verify the pairing rule for the exact speakers you plan to buy.

Decide whether Bluetooth is a must-have

Bluetooth can be useful for direct playback from a phone or a guest’s device, but it does not automatically send that audio to speakers in other rooms. Ask whether Bluetooth is standalone or can feed the system’s existing groups.

Sonos documents Bluetooth audio sharing with grouped Sonos products for a specific list of products: Arc Ultra, Beam Ultra, Era 100, Era 100 SL, Era 300, Move 2, Roam, Roam 2, Roam SL and Sonos Play. The Bluetooth-capable product must already be configured and connected to the Sonos system over Wi-Fi, and it must remain grouped. Check Sonos’ current Bluetooth audio-sharing guidance for the latest supported-product list and conditions.

Match inputs and placement to each room

List any source equipment the speaker must accept before comparing models. A bedroom speaker used only for streaming has different connection needs from a living-room speaker connected to a television or a turntable. The manufacturer sheets illustrate how inputs differ: the C5 MkII W lists a line input, while the C20 W lists HDMI ARC, optical, line and phono inputs, plus a subwoofer output. The C20 W sheet also says its built-in RIAA stage can play a turntable through the speaker and restream that audio to other Audio Pro speakers in the system. Check current documentation for the model and source you plan to connect.

  • Dual angled tweeters and a powerful midwoofer deliver rich, balanced stereo sound with deep bass.
  • The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.

  • Go from unboxing to incredible sound in minutes with a quick plug-in and the Sonos app
  • Trueplay fine-tunes Era 100 SL for the unique acoustics of the room.

Consider the room’s size and purpose, as well as practical placement: is the speaker for background listening in a bedroom, shared listening in a larger room, or focused listening? Check that there is power where it will sit and reliable Wi-Fi coverage at that location. Specifications can help you compare physical size and connections, but they cannot predict how a speaker will sound in your room or guarantee network coverage. The C20 W’s larger listed cabinet and drivers than the C5 MkII W’s do not, by themselves, establish which will sound better in a particular space.

For comparison context, What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 multi-room speaker guide lists the C20 W among products with AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Audio Pro multi-room. Its 2026 multi-room systems guide provides broader editorial comparisons, including Sonos. These guides are editorial assessments, not a substitute for checking exact model compatibility and connections.

Use this buying checklist

  1. Name the system: Decide whether you want Google Home/Cast, AirPlay 2, Sonos or another manufacturer’s system, based on the devices and services used in your home.
  2. Verify the model: Confirm that the exact speaker can join the intended groups; do not use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth as a proxy for compatibility.
  3. Check daily controls: Verify support for the music services and app or casting method you plan to use, including any regional or model-specific limits.
  4. Separate the use cases: Confirm room-group support for synchronized listening across rooms and stereo-pair support if you want left/right channels in one room.
  5. Match sources and rooms: Check required inputs, speaker dimensions, available power and Wi-Fi at the intended placement.
  6. Check Bluetooth behavior: If guests need direct playback, find out whether Bluetooth stays in one speaker or can be shared with the grouped system, and note any prerequisites.

For example, the C5 MkII W manufacturer sheet lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, line input, 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi, Cast, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and multi-room playback; the C20 W sheet lists those streaming platforms along with HDMI ARC, optical, line and phono inputs and subwoofer output. These specifications make them useful examples to compare against a household’s needs, not universal recommendations or evidence of comparative sound quality.
