Choose a router to match your broadband plan, home layout, connected devices, and security needs—not simply the biggest speed number on the box. For a small, open home, one well-placed router may be enough; for a large or multistory home with stubborn dead zones, mesh Wi-Fi is often a better fit. Start by checking your real connection, then choose coverage and security features that your devices can use.
Start with your internet service and real speeds
Check the speed listed in your broadband plan, then measure what you actually get. A router cannot make a slower internet plan faster, so paying for capacity far beyond your service may not improve internet performance. Extra capacity can still matter if you expect to upgrade your plan or have many devices using the network at once.

Test both a wired connection and Wi-Fi, and check Wi-Fi in the rooms where you work, stream, or play games. A speed test beside the router alone can conceal weak coverage elsewhere. Tom’s Guide recommends comparing actual wired and wireless results with the service agreement before choosing equipment: Tom’s Guide router buying guide.
What to match to your household
- Broadband speed: Choose a router suited to your current plan and any likely upgrade, rather than assuming a higher advertised router speed will increase the speed your provider delivers.
- Devices and activities: Consider how many devices connect and whether they need reliable video calls, streaming, gaming, or basic browsing.
- Wired connections: Count devices that need Ethernet, such as a desktop PC, game console, or mesh node using wired backhaul. Check the router’s port availability before buying.
- Client compatibility: Newer Wi-Fi features help only when the router and the connected phone, computer, or other device support them.
Choose a single router or mesh Wi-Fi
A single router is a sensible starting point for a small apartment or home with an open layout, especially when it can sit near the center. A mesh system is a stronger candidate when the home is large or multistory, thick walls interfere with signal, or tests show persistent weak areas despite good router placement. A powerful standalone router is not guaranteed to cover every room or floor.

| Option | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Single router | Small or open home with adequate signal where service is needed | Central, open placement is important; obstacles and construction can affect coverage. |
| Mesh system | Large or multistory home, or dead zones that persist after repositioning the router | A main unit and satellite nodes distribute the connection. Nodes can communicate wirelessly or, where supported and connected, over Ethernet. |
| Range extender | A localized weak area where a budget fix is preferred | It must receive a usable signal from the router. Standard extenders can reduce network speeds—Tom’s Guide warns they may cut speeds in half—so that trade-off is not guaranteed to suit every home. |
Coverage-area figures on product packaging are not guarantees of full-speed service throughout a particular home. Walls, building materials, other devices, and node placement all affect results. WIRED recommends estimating home area, positioning a single router centrally and in the open, and considering mesh when thick walls or dead spots undermine coverage: WIRED’s router buying guide.
Improve coverage with placement and the right band
Before replacing a router, try moving it to a central, elevated, open spot—such as a shelf or table—rather than hiding it in a cabinet or placing it at one end of the home. Keep it away from large appliances, metal, mirrors, and water, which can disrupt signals. Retest the rooms that matter after moving it.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Wi-Fi bands involve a range-versus-throughput trade-off. Microsoft describes 2.4 GHz as generally suitable for basic tasks, 5 GHz as generally offering faster throughput for uses such as streaming and gaming, and 6 GHz as capable of strong performance near the router. The 6 GHz band has shorter range and passes through walls less effectively; using it requires both a Wi-Fi 6E-capable router and a compatible device. See Microsoft’s explanation of Wi-Fi and home layout.

If one distant room is the only problem, an extender may be adequate if it can be placed where it still receives a strong signal. If weak coverage is spread across floors or rooms, mesh nodes can place access points nearer those areas. Neither solution increases the speed supplied by your broadband provider.

Match Wi-Fi generation to your devices
Wi-Fi 6 improves efficiency and capacity; Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 onto the 6 GHz band; and Wi-Fi 7 adds capabilities including Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which compatible devices can use across multiple bands. These labels describe capabilities, not a promise that every device will achieve a particular speed or that a router will cover the whole home.
Microsoft notes that both the router and wireless adapter must support newer features, and performance varies by manufacturer and hardware. Check the Wi-Fi capabilities of the devices you actually use before paying extra for a newer generation. Microsoft’s overview is at Faster and more secure Wi-Fi in Windows.

Choose security you can maintain
Prefer WPA3 Personal if the devices that must connect support it. If they do not, WPA2 Personal remains an acceptable fallback in FTC guidance. If a router offers only obsolete WPA or WEP, check whether a software update adds WPA2 or WPA3; if not, consider replacing it. The FTC’s advice is in How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network.

Router security also depends on ongoing support, not just the features listed at purchase. Before buying, check the manufacturer’s update policy for the specific model; no universal support period can be assumed. NIST’s September 10, 2024 final consumer-grade router cybersecurity profile sets out cybersecurity outcomes and associated requirements, underscoring that security is part of the product choice: NISTIR 8425A.
Make the final choice from your own constraints
Compare only routers or systems that fit your broadband connection and required wired connections. Then decide whether one centrally placed unit covers the rooms you tested or whether you need mesh or a carefully placed extender. Finally, confirm that the security mode works with your essential devices and that the manufacturer or ISP provides updates. Without a budget, floor plan, ISP connection type and speed, device list, and Ethernet needs, there is no sound basis for naming one best model.
