How to Choose a Water Filter That Reduces PFAS

Choose a PFAS filter by matching your water results to an exact-model certification, then compare treatment type, replacement costs, installation, and RO water use.

To choose a water filter that reduces PFAS, first check whether PFAS have been found in your water. Then verify that the exact filter model is independently certified for PFAS reduction—and check which PFAS the certification covers. A standard number or a broad “PFAS removal” marketing claim is not enough.

Start with your water results

Ask your water utility for its PFAS test results, and consult your state or local health department if you need help interpreting them. The U.S. EPA advises checking local results before buying: a filter may not be useful if PFAS have not been measured or are below federal limits. Private-well owners can ask their state or local health authority about testing options.

Use the results to identify which PFAS, if any, are a concern. That matters because treatment performance varies by compound. For example, granular activated carbon (GAC) generally works better for longer-chain PFAS such as PFOA and PFOS than for shorter-chain PFAS such as PFBS and PFBA. The EPA notes that performance also depends on the filter media, water flow, water composition, and the specific PFAS present. EPA: treatment technologies for reducing PFAS

Verify certification for the exact model

Look for a claim that the specific make and model is certified for PFAS reduction under NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58. Then search the certifier’s product directory and confirm that the listing matches the model and names the PFAS reduction claim you need. A filter may meet a standard for other contaminants without being certified for PFAS.

Culligan ZeroWater 32-Cup Water Filter Dispenser Removes PFAS
  • 5-stage advanced water filter dispenser: Our filter’s 5-Stage Advanced Water Filtration technology removes 99.9% of dissolved solids – guaranteed.
  • Certified to reduce lead and Total PFAS: Our water filter dispenser is certified by IAPMO to reduce Total PFAS (also known as forever chemicals), lead, chlorine, mercury and many other harmful contaminants.
  • Powerful filtration for total confidence: Each water filter dispenser is equipped with a powerful Culligan with ZeroWater Technology filter, certified to reduce 5x more contaminants than the leading filter.
  • Includes TDS water tester: Our built-in TDS meter measures the level of dissolved solids in your water instantly and alerts you when it’s time to change your filter. When the meter reads 0, that means your filter is removing virtually all TDS from your water.
  • Space-saving design: Our BPA-free pour-through filtered water pitchers and water dispensers fit easily into refrigerators or stand elegantly on your countertop, saving you space without sacrificing style.

Read the certification’s scope carefully. EPA’s home-filter guidance, describing the certification landscape as of April 2024, said these certifications focused on PFOA and PFOS and did not then indicate that a filter reduced them to EPA’s drinking-water standard levels. Certification for named PFAS is not proof that a product removes every PFAS or brings water below a particular regulatory limit. Compare the treatment options

Type How it works and key trade-off What to verify
Granular activated carbon (GAC) Carbon adsorbs some PFAS as water passes through it. It can work better for longer-chain PFAS than shorter-chain PFAS, and its capacity is limited. Exact-model NSF/ANSI 53 PFAS-reduction claim; PFAS named; rated capacity, flow rate, and replacement interval.
Ion-exchange (IX) resin Resin beads attract and hold contaminants. Performance and capacity depend on the resin and water conditions. Exact-model PFAS claim and independent certification; replacement interval and availability of compatible cartridges.
Reverse osmosis (RO) A membrane separates treated water from a reject stream. EPA describes high-pressure membranes as highly effective for PFAS, but RO requires maintenance and sends untreated water to the drain. Exact-model NSF/ANSI 58 PFAS-reduction certification; PFAS named; installation needs, replacement schedule, and water-use information.

No treatment type is the best choice for every home. Match the certified claim to your water results, then weigh capacity, flow, installation, replacement parts, and ongoing costs. EPA’s description of GAC performance underscores why no single headline claim is enough: it depends on the carbon, system design, water conditions, and PFAS being treated. Aquagear Water Filter Pitcher – Lead, Chlorine, PFOA/PFOS, Microplastics Filter, 10 Cup, 120 Gallon Filter Life - Filter Media Made in USA
  • Removes 20X more contaminants than a traditional pitcher. Third-party tested to filter lead, chlorine, microplastics, PFOA, PFOS, and more contaminants other filters miss.
  • Keeps good minerals in. Other filters strip out minerals. Aquagear targets nasty contaminants without removing healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium.
  • Last 3X longer. Each Aquagear filter lasts 120 gallons—three times longer than most standard filters.
  • Filter recycling included. Never throw another water filter in the trash again. We send you a postage-paid label so you can return your filter for recycling and keep it out of the landfill.
  • Filter Media Made in USA. The Aquagear filter media is made in an ISO 9000 facility.

Account for purchase, maintenance, and water use

EPA gives broad U.S. category estimates of $20–$1,000 for point-of-use GAC or ion-exchange systems and $150–$1,000 for RO systems; these exclude maintenance and are not live prices or comparisons of specific products. Add the cost and availability of replacement cartridges or membranes before deciding. EPA estimates that RO wastes approximately one gallon of water for every gallon treated; actual device performance varies. EPA: identifying filters certified to reduce PFAS

Check how often parts need replacing and whether compatible replacements are easy to obtain. Cartridges and membranes have limited lifetimes. Follow the manufacturer’s schedule: EPA warns that using a filter beyond its recommended replacement interval can increase exposure risk. EPA: home-filter guidance

Use this buying checklist

  1. Get PFAS results from your water utility, or ask state or local health authorities about testing and interpretation.
  2. Identify which PFAS matter for your water.
  3. Find the exact filter make and model in the certifier’s directory; confirm the listing explicitly covers PFAS reduction and the relevant compounds.
  4. Compare rated capacity, flow, installation requirements, replacement schedule, and replacement-part cost and availability.
  5. If considering RO, factor in space, maintenance, and reject-water use.
  6. Replace cartridges and membranes on the manufacturer’s schedule.

Understand the regulatory context

Regulatory limits and compliance deadlines are separate from a filter’s certification claim. In May 2026, EPA reported limits of 4.0 parts per trillion each for PFOA and PFOS. As of the EPA pages last updated in July 2026, proposals would retain those limits while allowing eligible water systems to request up to two extra years—until 2031—to comply. EPA also described a separate proposal to rescind regulations for PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX), and the specified Hazard Index mixture that includes PFBS. Those were proposals, not final changes on the cited pages; check current status before relying on them.
