Choose a wired video doorbell if your existing wiring is compatible and you want reliable power—or continuous recording on a model that supports it. Choose a battery model for more flexible placement, but plan for recharging and check its recording limits. For either type, verify what works without a subscription and whether “local storage” means footage you can actually access.
Wired or battery: which suits your home?
Power type affects more than installation. It can determine how often you need to charge the device and which recording modes it supports. A wired connection is not a guarantee of continuous recording: the specific model must support that feature.

Choose wired for compatible wiring and supported recording modes
A wired model can avoid routine battery charging, but doorbell systems vary. Check the exact model’s transformer voltage and power requirements, chime compatibility, and any accessory requirements before buying. If you want continuous recording, confirm that the model supports it; wiring alone does not enable the feature.
Choose battery for placement flexibility
A battery model can be easier to place where suitable doorbell wiring is unavailable, but it needs charging and may have different recording limits. Connecting a battery doorbell to existing wires does not necessarily turn it into a fully wired device: Ring says hardwiring its battery-powered doorbells provides a trickle charge. Google says Nest Doorbell (battery) does not support 24/7 history, even when optionally wired. Google’s event and 24/7 history guide and Google Home Premium’s feature table list model-specific qualifications; Ring explains battery-doorbell wiring in its hardwiring guide.

What does “local storage” mean?
Check whether a product offers footage you can browse locally, such as user-accessible storage on a device or hub, or only a temporary buffer that protects against network outages. Those are different capabilities.
Google says certain battery cameras and doorbells can keep events in internal memory while offline, then upload them to the cloud after reconnecting. The owner cannot access that internal memory. It can help preserve events during an outage, but it is not a browsable local archive. If you want saved video that does not depend on a cloud plan, verify user-accessible local recording on the exact model. Google explains how Nest cameras store recorded video.

What works without a subscription?
Do not assume that a doorbell records and saves clips without a paid plan just because live video is available. Check each function separately: live view, answering a notification, saved event clips, retention, and detection features.

Ring says users can view live video and answer notifications without a plan, while recorded cloud event video requires a plan. How to compare subscription plans
Compare the recording and retention you need, not just the headline price. Plans may differ in whether they save event clips or support continuous history, how long footage remains available, which devices are covered, and which detection features are included.
Google distinguishes event history from 24/7 history; availability depends on the model and plan. Its current feature table says some newer models get event history with Standard, while Advanced can provide longer event history or 24/7 history where the device supports it. Battery Nest Doorbell models are excluded from 24/7 recording. Ring says cloud motion-event videos can be stored for up to 180 days; that is a stated maximum, not a guarantee that every clip or plan has the same retention. Plan features and terms may vary by country. Consult the current Google Home Premium feature table and Ring plan details for your location and device.

Transformer requirements are model-specific, so do not assume that a wired doorbell will work with any existing wiring. Ring lists different voltage and power ranges for different products. For example, its guide gives 8–24 VAC, 5–40 VA for Ring battery doorbells and Video Doorbell Elite, and 10–24 VAC, 8–40 VA for Video Doorbell Wired; other models have their own requirements. These figures are not interchangeable—check the exact model’s current installation guide.

Google recommends checking system compatibility and says a professional can measure voltage or upgrade an incompatible system. Ring cautions that qualified installation or permits may be required, depending on local rules. If you are unsure about the wiring or applicable electrical rules, seek qualified help rather than guessing. See Ring’s hardwiring guidelines and Google’s compatibility guide.
A practical checklist for comparing models
Before you buy, compare candidate doorbells against the requirements that matter in your home:
Quick Recap
- Power: Is it wired, battery-powered, or a battery model with optional trickle charging? How much charging and placement flexibility does that mean for you?
- Recording: Does it save event clips, support continuous 24/7 recording, or both? Confirm the exact model’s limits.
- Storage: Is there a user-accessible local archive, hub or SD storage, only an offline buffer, or cloud history?
- Free use: Without a paid plan, can you view live video, respond to alerts, save clips, and review them later?
- Plan terms: What is the current local price and billing cadence? How many devices are covered, how long are clips retained, and are the desired detection features included?
- Installation: Does your transformer meet that model’s voltage and power requirements? Will the chime work, and are accessories, professional labor, or permits needed?
- Ecosystem: Does the device work with your household’s app and account setup, and do you already pay for a compatible broader service?
