Buy a used FortiGate only after confirming the exact model fits your network, checking its current lifecycle status, verifying the device can be transferred to your FortiCloud/FortiCare account, and establishing which support and FortiGuard services are active. A unit that powers on is not proof that it is current, transferable, or covered.
Start with the network you need to protect
Do not choose by model number or a headline throughput figure alone. Write down the requirements the firewall must meet, then compare candidate models against them.

- Throughput: estimate expected WAN traffic with the security inspection features you plan to use enabled. A maximum or lab figure may not reflect your configuration.
- Ports: list the number and type of WAN, LAN, and other interfaces you need, plus any required transceivers.
- Features: identify VPN, SD-WAN, and high availability (HA) requirements.
- Coverage: decide whether you need FortiGuard updates, security lookups, FortiCare support, or HA service coverage.
- Total cost: compare the purchase price with any support or service costs you confirm for that specific unit.
Fortinet’s NGFW/Perimeter Firewalls Ordering Guide says its performance metrics come from internal lab tests under ideal conditions and that actual results may vary with network variables and other conditions. Treat published figures as comparison points, not promises about your installation.
Check the exact model’s lifecycle before negotiating
Look up the precise model in Fortinet’s Product Life Cycle information and check the live record, since dates are product-specific. Fortinet defines these milestones as follows:
#1 Best Overall
- Compact and Efficient Design: The FortiGate 40F is designed for small to mid-sized businesses and enterprise branch offices, featuring a compact, fanless desktop form factor that ensures quiet operation and minimizes space usage.
- Robust Connectivity Options: Equipped with 5 GE RJ45 ports, including 1 WAN port and 4 internal ports, this model provides essential connectivity and flexibility for various network configurations in a small-scale environment.
- High-Performance Security: Offers up to 1 Gbps IPS throughput and 600 Mbps threat protection throughput, using Fortinet’s purpose-built security processor technology to deliver industry-leading performance and protection for SSL encrypted traffic.
- Advanced Threat Protection: Integrated with Fortinet’s AI-powered FortiGuard Labs, the FortiGate 40F offers comprehensive cybersecurity, identifying and mitigating both known and unknown threats to maintain robust security across your network.
- Simplified Management and Deployment: Features a user-friendly management console that provides comprehensive network automation and visibility, coupled with Zero Touch Integration with Fortinet’s Security Fabric for easy deployment.
- End of Order: the last date the product may be ordered.
- Last Service Extension: the final date for extending service on a product that is no longer sold.
- End of Support: the point after which Fortinet is under no obligation to support the product.
Check the available software-support status for the model as well. A device that boots or routes traffic may still be past a relevant service or software-support milestone; neither behavior establishes current eligibility.
Make account transfer a condition of purchase
Ask the seller to show that they control the FortiCloud/FortiCare account holding the device and to complete or demonstrate the transfer before payment. Fortinet’s product registration guidance links to its device-transfer procedure. The procedure requires access to the device and both accounts, and a master-account user must perform the transfer.
Rank #2
- INTEGRATED FIREWALL APPLIANCE AND SECURITY SERVICES: Comes with FortiGate-40F Firewall Appliance, 1 year of FortiCare Premium, and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
- UTP SECURITY FEATURES: Offers protection from advanced threats with DNS filtering, URL filtering, video filtering, and controls against botnets.
- IDEAL FOR SMALLER SETTINGS: Best suited for small to mid-sized businesses needing reliable security without the complexity of larger systems.

- COMPACT AND EFFECTIVE: Provides a powerful, yet compact security solution that effectively protects against a wide range of cyber threats.
Fortinet says a device can be transferred up to three times within a twelve-month period; further transfers require a Technical Support request. The general procedure does not prove that a particular serial number is eligible or that its services will transfer. Verify the serial number and entitlement status with Fortinet, and agree with the seller who will perform each step. If the seller cannot provide the required account access, resolve the issue with Fortinet support before proceeding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerify FortiCare and FortiGuard separately
Ask for the exact unit’s current entitlement status and confirm the service coverage you need. Do not assume that an appliance listing includes active support or security services.
Rank #3
- Extensive Connectivity Options: The FortiGate 60F is designed with 10 GE RJ45 ports, including 2 WAN ports, 1 DMZ port, and 7 internal ports, offering broad flexibility and high-density connections for diverse enterprise networking needs.

- Advanced Security Features: Leverages continuous threat intelligence from AI-powered FortiGuard Labs, identifying and mitigating both known and unknown threats, enhancing security across all network traffic, whether encrypted or not.
Fortinet’s registration guidance points to account and device management, while its FortiGate administration documentation explains that an appliance can continue functioning as a firewall after FortiGuard licenses expire. Valid licenses are required for database and signature updates and for certain real-time or near-real-time security lookups. The practical distinction is that basic firewall operation does not mean the unit is receiving current protections or has support.
Price any eligible renewal separately, based on the serial number and the services you actually need. No general renewal price or blanket transferability of a seller’s service contract can be assumed from the device listing.
Rank #4
- HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
- UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
- OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
- RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
Account for HA and compatible accessories
If you intend to use HA, check coverage for every appliance in the cluster. Fortinet’s ordering guide says each cluster member must have valid support contracts and required FortiGuard licenses. A covered primary unit does not establish that another used unit meets that requirement.
For transceivers, consult the datasheet for the exact model; the ordering guide directs buyers there for compatibility. Confirm port types and accessory needs before treating a low-priced chassis as a complete deployment.
Best Value

Inspect the specific appliance before paying
These are practical buyer checks, not a Fortinet-prescribed test procedure. Arrange an inspection or demonstration where possible, and get the seller’s permission before resetting the device.
- Request the exact model and serial number, clear photos of the chassis and ports, and written confirmation that the seller controls the account currently holding the device.
- Ask for a boot demonstration. Check the case for damage or signs of liquid or heat exposure; inspect ports, fans, and the power supply.
- Confirm you can access the console or management GUI. If you plan to reset the unit, agree on that step with the seller first.
- Complete the account-transfer and entitlement checks before payment rather than relying on a promise to sort them out afterward.
Compare candidates on the same criteria
When you have more than one viable unit, compare them against the same requirements rather than choosing the cheapest listing or the largest advertised number.
- Inspected throughput relevant to your planned security features.
- WAN/LAN port types and counts, plus compatible transceivers.
- VPN, SD-WAN, and HA requirements.
- Remaining hardware and software lifecycle.
- Verified FortiCare and FortiGuard eligibility and confirmed renewal costs.
- Total purchase and service cost.
There is no established general failure rate for used FortiGate appliances, and no single model can be recommended without knowing the network requirements. Base the decision on the exact unit’s condition, lifecycle, transferability, service status, and fit for your configuration.
