How to Choose a USB Switch for Sharing Peripherals Between Computers (2026 Guide)

A USB switch shares peripherals between computers but does not switch monitor video. This guide explains how to compare host and device ports, USB generations, USB-C cables, auxiliary power, dock limitations and KVM alternatives.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a USB switch when you need to move USB peripherals—not the monitor image—between computers. A USB-only switch routes devices such as a keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, webcam or audio interface to the computer you select. It does not automatically change a monitor’s video input. If video and USB must change together, use a video KVM or a monitor with a supported built-in KVM feature.

Before buying, count the computers and peripherals, check the switch’s downstream ports and USB generation, match its host connectors to both computers, confirm its power arrangement, and verify dock compatibility. A USB-C plug by itself does not promise charging, video output, USB4 or Thunderbolt support.

Start by deciding what must switch

The most important choice is between switching USB data and switching the entire workstation. A USB sharing switch changes which computer can communicate with the attached USB devices. The monitor remains connected to whichever video source you selected on the monitor, graphics card or dock.

When a USB-only switch is enough

A USB switch is usually sufficient when the shared equipment is limited to USB peripherals. Typical examples include a keyboard and mouse, a printer, scanner, webcam, microphone, headset, storage device or audio interface. You can leave each computer’s display connected separately and press the switch button whenever you need the peripherals on the other host.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When you need a video KVM

If one button should move the keyboard, mouse and monitor signal together, look for a KVM that explicitly supports the video connection your computers use. Traditional KVMs switch a computer’s direct video output along with USB input devices. Check the KVM’s supported video connectors and resolutions in its own documentation; a USB switch cannot be assumed to provide those functions.

When a monitor KVM may fit better

Some monitors include an Auto KVM feature. ASUS describes Auto KVM as sharing one keyboard and mouse between two computers connected to a supported monitor. The exact monitor specification determines whether the feature exists and what connections it accepts, so verify the model rather than assuming every monitor with multiple inputs includes KVM.

Count hosts and peripherals before comparing models

Write down every computer and every USB device you want to share. A switch described as two-computer may still have only one downstream device socket, while another model may offer several. Include devices that are easy to forget, such as a webcam, USB microphone, card reader or printer.

Host count

Most compact sharing switches are intended for two computers, but the number of host connections is model-specific. Confirm that the switch has one host connection for each computer you plan to use. If you later add a third computer, a two-host switch will not provide a spare connection.

Downstream device count

Check the number and type of device ports, not just the phrase USB switch. Make sure the total covers all peripherals that must move together. If you need four devices, a one-port model would require an additional hub, and that hub introduces another compatibility and power point to verify.

Port layout and access

Front-facing device sockets are convenient for temporary equipment such as a flash drive or headset. Rear sockets keep permanent cables tidy. Button placement also matters: a wired or remote selector can be easier to reach when the switch is hidden behind a monitor, but only if that accessory is included with the exact model.

Match USB generation and connector types

USB generations affect compatibility and possible transfer speed, while connector shapes determine whether the supplied cables can physically connect. Read the switch specification, the host-computer ports and each peripheral’s requirements as one system.

USB 3.x, USB 2.0 and USB 1.1

Do not infer a particular speed from the words USB switch alone. A USB 3.0 switch can connect older devices, but the older device still operates according to its own capability. Eaton states that its U359-002 is backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 devices. That is a compatibility statement for that model, not a universal rule for every switch.

For keyboards, mice and many printers, USB 2.0 capability may be adequate. High-throughput storage, cameras or other demanding devices make the switch’s stated USB generation more important. Compare the switch, host cables and peripherals; the slowest relevant link limits the resulting connection.

USB-A host leads and USB-C computers

Many switches ship with USB-A host leads. A computer with only USB-C ports may need a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter or a USB-C-to-USB-B cable, depending on the switch’s host socket and the cable included. Plugable’s guide for the USB3-SWITCH2 specifically notes this requirement for USB-C-only hosts.

Use an adapter or cable that supports USB data, not one intended only for charging. Confirm the connector at both ends and avoid forcing a physically compatible plug into a port with different data or power capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat USB-C as a feature list

USB-C describes a connector shape, not a single protocol. A USB-C port may support ordinary USB data, Power Delivery, DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4 or Thunderbolt—or only a subset. The switch must explicitly document the features you need. A USB-C socket on a switch does not by itself mean that it can carry a monitor signal or charge a laptop.

Check power before attaching demanding devices

Determine how the switch is powered and whether it accepts auxiliary power. Bus-powered operation can be convenient for low-power input devices, but a group of peripherals may draw more power than a single host port can comfortably provide.

Auxiliary input

Some products include a separate power input. UGREEN lists a 5V auxiliary input for model 30768. Another UGREEN product page describes optional power input for higher-power devices. These are product-specific arrangements; the available information does not establish a universal load limit for USB switches.

Symptoms of insufficient power

Intermittent disconnects, a storage device that disappears under load, a webcam that fails to start or peripherals that work only when fewer devices are attached can indicate a power problem. Check the switch manual for its approved supply and connect auxiliary power exactly as specified. Do not substitute an arbitrary adapter with an unknown voltage or polarity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand dock, video and charging limitations

Docks make USB-switch selection more complicated because one cable can carry several different functions. A dock may use ordinary USB data, DisplayLink software, USB-C Power Delivery, DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4 or Thunderbolt. A USB-only switch cannot be presumed to pass all of those signals.

Standard USB data docks

Plugable says its USB3-SWITCH2 may share compatible USB 3.0 DisplayLink docks when the dock uses a standard USB host data connection. In that arrangement, the switch changes the dock’s USB data host between computers; the dock’s own video method and software requirements still apply.

Power Delivery and alternate-mode docks

Plugable’s compatibility guidance excludes docks that rely on USB-C Power Delivery, DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4 or Thunderbolt features. If a laptop dock depends on one of those technologies, moving its cable through a USB-only switch may leave charging, displays or other functions unavailable. The practical alternative is to move the dock’s host cable manually, use a KVM designed for those signals, or connect each computer directly to the dock and switch the monitor separately.

Verify the exact combination

Compatibility is a property of the specific switch, dock, host computers and cables together. Check the switch manufacturer’s support article and the dock manufacturer’s requirements for your models. Do not generalize a successful combination with one dock to every USB-C dock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How a USB sharing switch works

The switch has host connections for the computers, downstream connections for peripherals and a selector that determines which host is electrically connected to those devices. Only the selected computer should enumerate the shared peripherals. When you press the button, the newly selected operating system detects the devices as if they had been unplugged and reconnected.

Because the monitor path is separate, you may need to change the monitor input yourself. If a dock is involved, you may also need to wait for its operating system software or display connection to reinitialize. A USB switch does not merge two computers into one desktop and does not copy files between them.

Installation procedure

  1. Inventory the setup. Record each computer, its available USB connectors, every shared peripheral, the monitor inputs and any dock involved.
  2. Verify the model. Confirm the host count, downstream port count, USB generation, included host-cable connectors and power-input requirements in the exact manual or support page.
  3. Connect the peripherals. Plug the keyboard, mouse and other shared devices into the switch’s downstream ports. Use a powered hub only when the switch documentation and the hub’s power arrangement support that configuration.
  4. Connect each host. Attach one host cable to each computer. For a USB-C-only computer, use the adapter or cable type specified for the switch; confirm that the connection carries data.
  5. Apply auxiliary power if required. Connect only the approved supply when the device instructions call for external power or when your peripherals need more power than the host connection provides.
  6. Select a computer. Press the switch button or use the supplied selector. Give the operating system time to enumerate the devices before testing them.
  7. Set the video path separately. Select the correct monitor input, or operate the video KVM or monitor KVM if your setup includes one. A USB-only switch will not perform this step.
  8. Test every peripheral on both hosts. Check input devices, cameras, audio, storage and printing. Test the arrangement with all devices attached, not just one keyboard.

Manufacturer examples and what they illustrate

These products demonstrate why specifications must be compared model by model. They are examples of documented designs, not universal recommendations.

Example Documented arrangement Selection lesson
Plugable USB3-SWITCH2 One-touch sharing of USB peripherals between two computers; manufacturer guidance covers certain USB 3.0 DisplayLink docks with standard USB host data connections. USB-C-only hosts may need an adapter or cable with the included USB-A host leads. The guidance excludes docks dependent on USB-C Power Delivery, DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4 or Thunderbolt.
Eaton U359-002 A two-port USB 3.0 peripheral-sharing switch for one peripheral between two computers; backward compatibility with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 devices is stated. “Two computers” does not necessarily mean several shared devices. Confirm the downstream arrangement before buying.
UGREEN 30768 A two-host USB 3.0 switch with four device ports and a listed 5V auxiliary input on the UGREEN India page. The page states that it switches USB only, not monitor or video signals. Regional specifications should be checked for the market where you will buy.

Choose by common setup

Keyboard and mouse for a desktop and laptop

Start with a USB switch that has enough device ports for both input devices and two host connections. Check whether the laptop needs a USB-C adapter or cable. Keep the monitor connected through whichever video arrangement is most convenient, because the USB switch will not change it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Printer or scanner shared by two computers

A one-device, two-host switch may fit if only the printer or scanner must move. Confirm that the device does not require a special driver connection that is disrupted by repeated USB reconnection, and test scanning or printing from both operating systems.

Webcam and audio interface

These devices can be more sensitive to power and reconnection than a keyboard. Check the switch’s USB generation and auxiliary-power provisions, then test the camera and audio application on each computer after switching. If the application retains the old device session, close and reopen it.

Two computers with one DisplayLink dock

Use only a switch-and-dock combination that the manufacturer lists as compatible. The USB3-SWITCH2 guidance covers certain DisplayLink docks using standard USB host data, while excluding several USB-C alternate-mode and high-feature dock designs. If your dock depends on excluded features, manually move its host cable or choose a KVM designed for the complete signal set.

Two laptops with one monitor, charging and peripherals

A USB-only switch is normally incomplete for this goal. You need a video KVM, a monitor with a compatible KVM, or a carefully designed dock-and-monitor arrangement. Confirm charging and video support separately; a USB-C connector on the switch does not provide either guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and fixes

Mistake: expecting the monitor to change

Symptom: the keyboard moves to the other computer but the monitor still shows the first one. Fix: change the monitor input or use a video KVM or monitor KVM. The behavior is normal for a USB-only switch.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Mistake: buying by port shape

Symptom: a USB-C cable fits, but charging or video does not work. Fix: read the model documentation for Power Delivery, DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4 and Thunderbolt support. Connector shape alone is insufficient.

Mistake: too few downstream ports

Symptom: one peripheral works, but the complete keyboard, mouse and webcam set cannot be connected. Fix: count all devices before purchase and compare the exact downstream port count. Add a hub only when its compatibility and power needs are documented.

Mistake: wrong host cable

Symptom: a USB-C-only computer does not detect the switch. Fix: use the adapter or data cable specified for the switch’s USB-A host lead, then test another USB-C port if the computer has more than one type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: unstable operation under load

Symptom: devices disconnect or fail when several are active. Fix: connect the model’s approved auxiliary power, reduce the attached load temporarily and check every cable. Do not assume that a power arrangement documented for one model applies to another.

Mistake: assuming a dock is interchangeable

Symptom: USB devices work through the dock, but displays or laptop charging stop after inserting the switch. Fix: identify whether the dock relies on standard USB data, DisplayLink, Power Delivery, DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4 or Thunderbolt, and follow the exact compatibility guidance for that combination.

A final buying checklist

  • Are you switching USB peripherals only, or must video change too?
  • How many computers will connect simultaneously?
  • How many peripherals must move, and what plugs do they use?
  • Does the switch support the USB generation required by your devices?
  • Do both computers have compatible host connectors, or will you need data-capable adapters or cables?
  • Does the model provide auxiliary power, and do your attached devices need it?
  • Is a dock involved, and does its design rely on DisplayLink, Power Delivery, DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4 or Thunderbolt?
  • Have you checked the exact manual and support page rather than relying on the connector label?

The safest selection method is to eliminate every model that fails one required criterion, then compare the remaining switches on port layout, cable convenience, power options and documented dock behavior. Manufacturer specifications establish compatibility claims, but the available documentation does not provide independent comparative measurements of latency, reliability or cross-brand performance. Treat those qualities as unverified unless you can test the exact setup yourself.
