For fast transfers, compare a drive’s stated write speed if you copy files onto it, and its read speed if you copy files from it. Then check that both the drive and your computer or device support the same connector and USB speed. A USB label describes a connection capability—not the file-copy speed you are guaranteed to get.
Start with the direction of your transfer
Read and write speeds describe different tasks. Write speed matters when saving files from a computer onto the flash drive; read speed matters when opening or copying files from the drive to another device. If you regularly transfer in both directions, compare both figures rather than choosing by the largest number on the package.

For example, Kingston rates its DataTraveler Max at up to 1,000 MB/s read and 900 MB/s write. SanDisk lists up to 100 MB/s read for the Ultra Shift and says write speeds are lower. Check the USB speed supported by both ends
A fast drive cannot make a slower host port transfer faster. USB-IF says USB products are backward compatible and operate at the lowest common speed capability. USB 3.2 covers 5, 10, and 20 Gbps signaling rates; the connection between a particular drive and host is limited by what both support. USB-IF USB 3.2 overview.

When comparing labels, look for the stated signaling rate rather than relying on a generation name alone. USB-IF’s January 2024 consumer guidance identifies USB 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 Gbps performance names and advises against using specification terms such as “USB 3.2” or “SuperSpeed+” as consumer-facing performance names. Gbps is link signaling capability, not a promise of the same number converted into file-copy MB/s. USB-IF USB Data Performance Language Usage Guidelines.
USB4 can work with USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices, with the connection scaling to the best mutual capability. That standard overview describes compatibility; it does not mean a flash drive itself reaches USB4’s headline bandwidth. USB-IF USB4 overview.

Match the connector and capacity to your devices
Check the ports on every device involved in the transfer. A USB-A drive will not plug directly into a USB-C-only port without an adapter, and a connector that fits does not establish the fastest supported connection. Confirm the exact variant and any adapter’s capability.

Compare like with like—not just the headline number
Use these manufacturer-listed examples as specification reference points, not as a ranking or an exhaustive market survey. Their figures are maximum ratings, not independently verified real-world results.

Account for real-world performance
“Up to” is a ceiling under suitable conditions, not a guaranteed sustained copy speed. Actual results depend on factors including the host, drive capacity, usage conditions, and the file-transfer workload. For large files, compare stated sequential write performance when the main task is copying files onto the drive. If you need dependable sustained speeds, look for independent tests of the exact capacity and model under a workload like yours.

Use a practical buying checklist
- Identify the main task: copying onto the drive, copying from it, or both.
- Check the matching speed figure: prioritize write speed for saving files to the drive and read speed for retrieving them.
- Verify host capability: identify the USB port on the computer or device and the drive’s stated signaling rate; the connection works at the lowest shared capability.
- Confirm the physical fit: match USB-A or USB-C to your devices, accounting for any adapter and its limitations.
- Choose enough capacity: confirm the exact capacity variant rather than assuming every speed rating applies to every size.
- Check evidence for your workload: use independent testing of the specific model and capacity if sustained speed or small-file performance is essential.
- Compare warranty and availability: verify current terms and listing details with the manufacturer or retailer.
