1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a USB-C cable by matching its connector ends, charging-power rating, data rate, and video requirements to the devices you will connect. The USB-C plug shape alone does not tell you what a cable can do: USB-IF warns that “All cables do not have the same capabilities.”
Start with the devices and the job
Write down what you need the cable to connect and what you expect it to do: charge a phone or laptop, transfer files to an external drive, connect a laptop to a monitor, or handle more than one of those jobs. Check the specifications for both devices and any charger or adapter in the chain.

USB-C identifies a connector family, not a performance tier. Two cables with the same-looking plugs can differ in power capability, data rate, and video support. Those are separate requirements: a high wattage rating does not establish a high data rate, and a high data rate does not by itself prove monitor compatibility.
Match the cable’s power rating to charging needs
Check the maximum charging power required by the device and supported by the charger, then look for a cable rated to handle at least that power. USB-IF’s compliance guidance calls for compliant USB-C-to-USB-C cables to carry a 60 W or 240 W capability marking. The marking describes the cable’s capability; it does not mean your charger or device will deliver or accept that power.

Charging depends on the whole setup. If the charger, device, or cable supports less power than another part of the chain, the lower capability limits the result. A cable rated for more power can offer flexibility for another device, but it may be unnecessary for a phone or other equipment that does not use it.
USB-IF’s cable-marking guidance is available in its Cables and Connectors guidance and compliance updates. These are compliance-program requirements, not a guarantee that every unmarked cable or older cable on sale carries the same markings.

Choose a data rate that fits your transfer workload
For routine charging, data rate may not matter. For an external SSD, dock, or frequent large transfers, check the cable’s stated data rate as well as the rates supported by the source device and peripheral. A cable can charge a laptop adequately yet be too slow for a high-speed storage device.

USB4 is one option for demanding data and display setups, but its top-line capability is not a prediction of the speed your devices will achieve. USB-IF describes USB4 as supporting data and display protocols over a shared link, with a connection scaling to the best mutual capability of the connected devices. Its overview states that USB4 supports up to 80 Gbps over 80 Gbps certified cables. Actual performance depends on the cable and the connected devices’ capabilities.
Check the full video path before buying
To connect a computer to a monitor, verify that the computer’s USB-C port supports video output, that the monitor or adapter accepts the relevant connection, and that the cable supports the required display protocol. Also confirm that the source, display, and any dock or adapter support the resolution and refresh rate you want.

Video capability cannot be inferred from the USB-C connector or the cable’s charging wattage. With USB4, data and display protocols share a link, so available bandwidth is shared. A cable rating alone does not establish a particular resolution or refresh rate; the source, display, cable, and any intermediate adapter all matter. USB-IF’s USB4 overview explains its shared-link design and capability scaling.

Compare candidate cables on the details that matter
| What to check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Connector ends | Both ends fit the charger, device, display, or adapter. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable is not interchangeable with a cable that has a different plug at one end. |
| Charging power | The cable’s stated power capability meets the needs of the device and charger. USB-IF’s compliance marking guidance specifies 60 W or 240 W for compliant USB-C-to-USB-C cables. |
| Data rate | The stated data rate meets the needs of the connected storage, dock, or other peripheral, and is supported by the devices’ ports. |
| Video support | The source port, cable, display or adapter, and their supported display modes match your resolution and refresh-rate requirements. |
| Length | The chosen length suits your setup. The cited USB-IF guidance does not establish a universal cable-length limit across speeds, constructions, and use cases; consult the exact cable and device documentation for a long run. |
| Verifiable claims | Check for clear specifications and, where useful, a USB-IF certification listing. Certification helps verify a product’s stated category but does not add capabilities to connected devices. |
Use certification and product listings carefully
USB-IF certification can help distinguish products certified for particular cable purposes, but it is not a compatibility guarantee for your exact setup. USB-IF’s public Product Search lists products certified to bear the USB-IF logo. The database defaults to the most recent two years, and USB-IF notes that older entries may not meet the current iteration of its compliance program. Check a listing when evaluating a particular product.

USB-IF’s current specification listing identifies USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification Release 2.5, dated April 8, 2026. That publication does not mean every cable being sold conforms to it.
The USB-IF product search includes an example USB-C-to-USB-C braided cable listed at 80 Gbps and 240 W, with an e-marker and a length of 1.2 m. Those are the specifications of that listed example, not a recommendation that every user needs the maximum rating. Match the cable to your actual devices and workload.
A practical buying sequence
- Identify the ports: confirm the connector at each end and check whether the source USB-C port supports the function you need, especially video output.
- Set the charging requirement: use the device and charger specifications to determine the power needed, then select a cable with an adequate stated power capability.
- Set the data requirement: for storage or a dock, compare the required data rate with the cable marking and the specifications of both connected devices.
- Confirm video requirements: verify the display protocol and desired resolution and refresh rate across the source, cable, display, and any adapter.
- Check length and evidence: choose a practical length, review the cable maker’s exact specifications, and consult USB-IF’s product database if certification verification matters.
For ordinary charging, a well-documented cable with a suitable power rating may be all you need. For fast storage or a monitor, do not buy on wattage or plug shape alone: confirm the data and video capabilities of the complete connection.
