Choose a gaming TV by matching its native refresh rate and HDMI input capabilities to the console or PC—and the games—you actually use. A “120Hz” or “HDMI 2.1” label is not enough on its own: check which signals each port accepts, whether it supports VRR and ALLM, and compare input-lag measurements taken at the same resolution, refresh rate and picture mode.
Start with the signal your console or PC can use
A TV’s refresh rate describes how often its display can refresh, in hertz (Hz). A 120Hz screen can refresh up to 120 times per second, twice as often as a 60Hz screen. That is a display capability, not a promise that every game will run at 120 frames per second: the source device and game determine what signal and frame rate are available.

Before paying extra for 120Hz, check the output options for your console or PC and the games you care about. Then confirm that the TV accepts the intended resolution and refresh rate over the HDMI port you will use. HDMI 2.1 feature material includes modes such as 4K at 120Hz, but the standard’s capabilities do not mean every source, game or TV port supports that combination.
What “HDMI 2.1” tells you—and what to verify
HDMI 2.1 feature summaries include higher refresh-rate modes, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Quick Frame Transport (QFT). HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) describes HDMI 2.1b as supporting bandwidth capability up to 48Gbps. These are specification capabilities, not a guarantee that a product implements every feature on every HDMI port.

Check the manufacturer’s specification page or manual for the exact TV model. In particular, look for:
- The maximum resolution and refresh rate accepted by each HDMI port.
- Whether the desired 4K/120Hz signal works with the color and HDR settings you plan to use.
- VRR support, including the compatible format and operating range if specified.
- ALLM support and whether it switches automatically with your console or PC.
- How many ports support the gaming signal you need, especially if a receiver or soundbar will also connect by HDMI.
- Independent input-lag results for the same signal and picture mode you expect to use.
Do not assume every HDMI socket on one TV has identical capabilities. If several devices need the same high-bandwidth features, port count can matter as much as the headline specification.

VRR and ALLM solve different problems
VRR helps with changing frame delivery
Games may deliver frames at varying intervals as scenes and system demands change. VRR coordinates the display’s timing with that variable delivery, which can help reduce screen tearing and judder. It does not make the console or PC render frames faster. Confirm that both the source and TV support a compatible VRR format and that the TV’s stated operating range suits your intended use. HDMI Forum describes VRR as reducing or eliminating lag, stutter and frame tearing; treat that as a description of the feature’s aim, not a guarantee of zero delay on every product.
ALLM switches to a low-latency picture mode
With ALLM, a compatible console, PC or other source can signal the TV to switch automatically into a low-latency mode for gaming. HDMI LA describes it as automatic switching to a low-latency, low-lag mode. ALLM does not specify a particular input-lag result in milliseconds. Game modes may also disable some image processing, so check the TV’s picture behavior if you want those features while playing. Automatic switching is convenient, but it is not a substitute for measured performance.

- Real 8K HDMI certified cable: The HDMI cables pass HDMI 2.1 Certified. The HDMI Cable delivers 10K 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz higher resolution, 4 times higher than 4K@60Hz. The advanced technology makes a remarkable improvement in image clarity and sharpness
- 48Gbps ultra high speed: The HDMI 2.1 Cable with 48Gbps bandwidth delivers uncompressed 8K(7680 x 4320) video and high-speed transmission without signal loss. Make it faster 2.6X than HDMI 2.0(18Gbps). The 4K@240Hz HDMI cord also supports variable refresh rates and QFT to decrease “display latency”. Auto low latency mode and quick media switching for movies and video use the HDMI VRR mechanism to eliminate the blackout period when an HDMI Source device switches its video mode
- Dynamic HDR & eARC: This HDMI Cable features Dynamic HDR to let you capture more details with 12-bit color accuracy and get breathtakingly realistic pictures. The function of eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) directly delivers full-resolution audio, like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X from TV to soundbar/AV receiver. Also Support HDCP 2.3/2.2, Ethernet, 3D
- Enhanced durability: Built with a robust aluminum alloy case, nickel-plated connectors, and a durable nylon braided jacket, HDMI cables can withstand more frequent bending tests and decrease rupture without reducing cable flexibility, ensuring enhanced signal transmission performance and a longer lifespan
- Wide compatibility: Compatible with Apple TV/PS5/PS4 Pro/Roku Stick, Xbox Series X/S/Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Wii U, Mac mini M4/M4 Pro, Laptop, PC, Blu-ray player, AV Receiver, TV stick, TV Box, DVD player, LG 8K UHD TV, Samsung G8/G9 QLED TV, Soundbar, Projector, Monitor and more
How to compare input lag fairly
Input lag is the delay between an input from the source and the resulting image appearing on the screen. It depends on the signal and the TV’s picture mode, so a single number without test conditions is not a complete comparison.
Compare like with like: for example, 4K/60Hz in Game mode against 4K/60Hz in Game mode, or 4K/120Hz against 4K/120Hz. Check whether a test used Game mode if you intend to use additional picture processing instead. RTINGS says its TV input-lag tests cover multiple resolutions and refresh rates and, unless otherwise noted, use the TV’s lowest-input-lag mode, usually called Game mode. Its reference of under 15ms as a good value, and a 15ms noticeable difference, applies to its 1080p at 60Hz test context—not a universal pass/fail threshold for every signal or player.

When you need a new HDMI cable
For a compatible TV and source that need the bandwidth for a high-resolution, high-refresh-rate signal, choose a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. HDMI LA says this cable supports 48Gbps for uncompressed HDMI 2.1 features and is backward compatible with earlier HDMI devices. A cable cannot add a feature the TV or source lacks, and buying one does not by itself improve input lag.

A practical shortlist for choosing a gaming TV
- Match the refresh rate to your use. Check the console or PC’s output options and the games you play before deciding whether 120Hz is worth prioritizing over 60Hz.
- Verify the exact HDMI port. Confirm the resolution and refresh rate it accepts, along with VRR and ALLM support. Check that the desired features work together at your chosen settings.
- Check the rest of your setup. Count the ports that support the signal you need and account for an HDMI-connected soundbar or receiver.
- Compare matched input-lag tests. Use results for the same resolution, refresh rate and picture mode; do not compare unlike test conditions as if they were equivalent.
- Choose a cable for the required bandwidth. Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when both devices support a high-bandwidth signal that requires it.
