1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuy for verifiable performance, not a speculative “8K-ready” label. For a television that can serve current and unknown future consoles, make 4K at 120 Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), sufficient compatible HDMI inputs and the correct cable your minimum checklist. Confirm those functions on the exact model and on the specific HDMI port you will use. No official specification establishes that an unannounced console will require an 8K display.
What “future-proof” can realistically mean
A future console is an unknown product. Official documentation available today describes current PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S capabilities, not the hardware requirements of an unannounced generation. That makes a promise such as “ready for the next 8K console” impossible to verify. A more useful definition of future-proofing is buying a display that already handles demanding console features and has enough compatible connections for the equipment you expect to own.

Use the console, game, cable, TV model, HDMI input and TV settings as one system. A television can advertise a high resolution while a particular input, cable or setting prevents that mode from working. Conversely, a capable panel cannot make a game render at a mode that the console or game does not provide.

| Capability | What to verify on the exact TV | Why it matters for consoles |
|---|---|---|
| 4K at 120 Hz | The specification or manual must state support for the combined 4K/120 Hz signal, and identify which HDMI inputs accept it. | Provides the high-resolution, high-refresh target supported by current consoles when a game and connection allow it. |
| Variable refresh rate (VRR) | Confirm VRR support, its input availability and any stated operating range or signal-format requirement. | Lets the display synchronize refresh timing with a compatible console output to reduce tearing and uneven motion. |
| Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) | Check that ALLM is supported on the intended input and whether it switches automatically or requires a setting. | Allows a console to request the TV’s low-latency game mode. |
| HDMI allocation | Count the ports that support the desired modes, not just the total number of HDMI sockets. | Prevents a second console, receiver or computer from forcing you to move cables or give up a feature. |
| Signal-format controls | Look for labels such as “Enhanced format (4K120, 8K)” or “Enhanced format (VRR),” or the equivalent wording in the manual. | Some sets ship with a standard compatibility mode that must be changed before high-bandwidth signals work. |
4K is not the same as 4K at 120 Hz
“4K” normally identifies resolution. It does not, by itself, promise 120 Hz operation, VRR, or support on every HDMI input. Treat 4K/120 Hz as a single combination that must be explicitly documented. A television with a 4K panel but only 4K/60 Hz inputs will not become a 4K/120 Hz display through a firmware setting or a different cable.

PlayStation support documentation identifies 4K/120 Hz output as a supported PS5 capability. Xbox’s official guidance describes up to 120 Hz for Series X|S. Those statements describe what the consoles can output; they do not mean every game uses that mode, nor that every television accepts it.
VRR and ALLM
VRR is useful when frame delivery varies. Instead of holding the panel to one fixed cadence, a compatible display adjusts its refresh timing within the supported range. The result depends on the console’s output, the game and the TV’s actual VRR range. Verify those details rather than assuming that a generic “gaming” mode includes VRR.
ALLM is a signaling feature. A compatible console can ask the television to select its low-latency picture preset when gameplay starts and return to another preset for video. If the TV lacks ALLM, you can usually select a game mode manually, but the automatic behavior will not be available. Xbox’s official description lists both ALLM and VRR among Series X|S capabilities.

How to verify a model before buying
- Write down your target mode. Decide whether you specifically need 4K/120 Hz, or whether 4K/60 Hz is sufficient for your games and budget. If 120 Hz is a requirement, keep that requirement visible while comparing models.
- Open the manufacturer’s specification page for the exact regional model number. Do not rely on a retailer’s family name or a review of a visually similar model. Record the stated refresh input, VRR and ALLM support.
- Read the input table in the manual. Identify which HDMI sockets accept 4K/120 Hz and VRR. Note whether one or more ports are limited to lower modes, and whether an eARC connection occupies one of the high-capability ports.
- Find the signal-format setting. Manufacturers may ship an input in a standard mode. Confirm the menu path and the setting required for high-bandwidth signals before you install the console.
- Count your devices against capable ports. Include every console, an AV receiver or soundbar, a computer and any device you may add soon. Two total HDMI sockets are not equivalent to two sockets that support the same mode.
- Check the manual’s caveats. Look for restrictions involving resolution, refresh rate, chroma format, HDR, VRR range, simultaneous features or a particular input. A specification that omits these details is not proof of universal support.
- Save the model number and manual. Keep them with your purchase records. Input assignments and menu names are model-specific, which matters when you troubleshoot later.
Which HDMI port should the console use?
Use the port identified by the TV maker for the signal you want. Sony’s official help guidance gives a concrete example: when a console supports 4K/120 Hz and VRR, connect it to an HDMI input labelled “4K 120Hz” or “4K 120Hz 8K,” or to an input whose signal-format menu offers “Enhanced format (4K120, 8K)” or “Enhanced format (VRR).” Other manufacturers use different labels, so the exact manual is authoritative for your set.
Do not infer capability from the port count or from an HDMI version number alone. A television can expose a newer interface on only selected inputs, and manufacturers may allocate bandwidth differently across a model range. If you connect through a receiver, switch or soundbar, check that device’s support for the complete signal path; otherwise connect the console directly to the TV’s compatible input.

Cables: what to use and what they cannot do
Start with the HDMI cable supplied with the console when it is suitable for the desired mode. Sony’s TV guidance recommends the supplied cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for a console supporting 4K/120 Hz. If you need a replacement or a longer run, choose a certified Ultra High Speed cable appropriate to the installation.
A cable is a link, not an upgrade. It cannot add 4K/120 Hz, VRR or ALLM to a TV input that lacks the capability. Conversely, an unsuitable or damaged cable can prevent an otherwise compatible setup from negotiating the target signal. Replace the cable only after confirming the TV port, console output and signal-format setting.

Do you need an 8K TV for the next console?
No current official guidance establishes that you do. The PS5 FAQ discusses 8K compatibility and output conditions tied to system software, available content and supported software. It does not announce a future hardware requirement, and it does not say that every game renders natively at 8K.
An 8K panel can be a personal preference if you sit close to a very large screen, display high-resolution video or simply want the option. It should not be treated as an insurance policy against an unspecified console. Paying for 8K while sacrificing verified 4K/120 Hz inputs, VRR support, HDR performance or the number of usable ports is usually the wrong trade for a console-focused purchase.
When a future console is formally announced, reassess the television against its published output modes. Until then, buy the capabilities you can document today and leave room in your budget for a later display if the new hardware genuinely demands one.

Other buying decisions that still matter
The gaming checklist is necessary but not sufficient. Choose the rest of the television around your room and viewing habits, without assuming that a premium specification in one area guarantees a better picture everywhere.
Screen size and viewing distance
Measure the distance from your main seat to the screen and the available wall or stand space. A larger panel can make 4K detail easier to appreciate, but it also dominates a small room. Confirm the stand width, mounting pattern and clearance before ordering.
Room brightness and reflections
In a bright room, glare control and sustained brightness may matter more than an unused resolution mode. In a dark room, black-level behavior and local dimming can affect perceived contrast. Compare these characteristics for the specific model rather than relying on a panel-type label alone.
HDR behavior
Check which HDR formats the TV accepts, how HDR interacts with 120 Hz and VRR, and whether the manual lists any restrictions. A console can output HDR only when the entire chain, including the selected input and active picture settings, supports it.
Input latency and game mode
Look for independent measurements of input latency at the resolutions and refresh rates you will actually use. Also check how game mode affects HDR, local dimming and motion processing. A low-latency mode that disables picture features may be appropriate for competition but less attractive for cinematic games.

Price, warranty and software support
Prices and warranty terms vary by country and change frequently. Confirm the local policy, dead-pixel coverage, return period and firmware-update process. Firmware can add or refine compatibility, but you should not buy on the assumption that an absent hardware input will be created later.
Setup procedure after delivery
- Update the TV and console. Install available system updates before diagnosing a missing mode. Record the software version if a support call becomes necessary.
- Connect directly to the documented HDMI input. Use the port identified for 4K/120 Hz or VRR, then select the manufacturer’s enhanced signal format if required.
- Connect the console with its supplied or suitable Ultra High Speed cable. Avoid adding a receiver, switch or capture device until the direct connection works.
- Open the console’s video-output information screen. On Xbox, the official guide recommends checking the 4K TV Details screen. Use the equivalent output-information page on other consoles to see which combinations the TV reports as supported.
- Enable VRR and ALLM where appropriate. Turn on the console option and the corresponding TV option, if the set exposes one. Some TVs place VRR under the enhanced-format menu rather than under picture settings.
- Test one game that supports the target mode. The console may report 120 Hz capability while an individual title remains at 60 Hz. Check the game’s own graphics or performance setting.
- Add other devices one at a time. If a receiver or soundbar is part of the final setup, insert it after the direct test and verify that the same output information remains available.
Troubleshooting common failures
The console shows 4K but not 120 Hz
- Confirm that the game offers a 120 Hz mode; console capability alone does not select it.
- Move the cable to the TV input documented for 4K/120 Hz.
- Change that input from standard to the required enhanced signal format.
- Try the console-supplied cable or a certified Ultra High Speed replacement.
- Remove intermediate devices and test the console directly.
VRR is unavailable
- Check that the selected input, rather than merely the TV model, supports VRR.
- Enable the TV’s VRR or enhanced-format option and the console’s VRR setting.
- Review the manual for restrictions involving resolution, refresh rate or HDR.
- Test with a game that actually produces a variable frame rate.
The picture drops out or flickers
- Reseat both HDMI connectors and inspect the cable for damage.
- Return to a direct console-to-TV connection.
- Temporarily select a lower mode to isolate whether bandwidth is the issue.
- Verify that the TV firmware, console software and any switch or receiver firmware are current.
ALLM does not switch picture modes
Confirm that ALLM is supported on the connected input and enabled on the console. If the television does not implement the signaling feature, select the low-latency game preset manually; this changes convenience, not the console’s underlying output capability.
Decision paths for different buyers
You are buying for a current PS5 or Xbox Series X|S
Prioritize a documented 4K/120 Hz input, VRR, ALLM and an appropriate cable. Use the console’s output-information screen and a supported game to verify the installation. Treat 8K as optional.
You expect two consoles and a sound system
Map every device before purchase. Count only the HDMI inputs that support your target mode, then reserve one for each high-performance console. Check whether eARC or the sound system occupies a port you planned to use.
You mostly play single-player games at 60 Hz
A reliable 4K/60 Hz setup may meet your needs. Still check HDR behavior, game-mode latency and input allocation, because those affect the experience even without 120 Hz.

You want the largest possible screen and are considering 8K
Buy 8K for a present viewing preference, not an unverified promise about future consoles. Ensure that the set retains the 4K/120 Hz, VRR and ALLM functions you may use with current hardware.
You plan to keep the TV for many years
Favor clearly documented specifications, enough capable ports, a usable warranty and a manufacturer that publishes manuals and firmware support. These are verifiable protections against changing accessories and consoles; an “8K-ready” badge is not.
What the official guidance actually establishes
Xbox Wire wrote on November 6, 2020: “As mentioned above, Xbox Series X|S support up to 120 Hz refresh rate, plus Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), which are new in the world of 4K TVs.” This is a statement about Series X|S capabilities, not a guarantee that every game or television reaches 120 Hz.
Sony’s TV help documentation gives the input-selection instruction quoted above for a console supporting 4K/120 Hz and VRR. Its practical point is that the label on the individual HDMI port and the selected signal format matter.
The PS5 FAQ’s 8K wording conditions output on system software, available content and supported software. It does not define the requirements of a future console. Those boundaries are why a capability checklist is more reliable than a prediction.
Bottom-line buying rule
Choose the TV whose exact manual proves the modes you need on the ports you will use. Make 4K/120 Hz, VRR, ALLM, port allocation and cable compatibility the evidence-based core of the purchase. Consider 8K only as an optional present-day feature, and revisit the decision when a future console has published specifications.
