The best turn-based RPG for you depends on what you want to decide most often. Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if you want tactical party battles, flexible character builds, online cooperation, and story choices that can reshape relationships and outcomes. Choose Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake if you prefer classic menu-command combat, vocation-based party building, a clear heroic quest, and a documented recruitable-monster feature. Neither game represents every kind of turn-based RPG, so use them as reference points rather than an overall ranking.
Before buying, confirm your platform, edition, local storefront and content rating. The two games differ more in combat interaction, collection systems and narrative structure than the shared label "turn-based" suggests.

Baldur’s Gate 3 uses team-based initiative inspired by Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Larian describes advantage and disadvantage, roll modifiers, environmental interactions and an advanced AI system. Positioning, the order in which characters act, and the way abilities interact with the surroundings can all change the value of a move. Larian says this system rewards strategy and foresight; its own developer article also says that the turn-based format lets a group deliberate over moves while keeping combat faster than Divinity: Original Sin 2. That comparison is a developer description, not an independent performance test.
Therefore, ask a more specific question than "Do I like turn-based games?" Ask whether you want command selection with a classic role-playing-game rhythm, or a tactical encounter in which the battlefield and your party’s choices create more variables.
Use three questions to identify your priorities
1. How much interaction do you want in each battle?
Menu-command combat can be satisfying when you enjoy learning enemy weaknesses, selecting the right skill and maintaining a well-balanced party. It keeps the interface readable and makes the main strategic layer your choice of abilities, equipment and party roles.

A more positional system asks additional questions: Who should act first? Where should each character stand? Can the environment create an advantage? Should you spend a powerful resource now or preserve it for a later turn? Larian’s description of Baldur’s Gate 3 specifically points to team initiative, advantage and disadvantage, environmental interactions and modifiers to dice rolls. Those systems give individual turns more context than a simple attack-versus-defense exchange.
Neither approach is automatically deeper or better. Pick the one that matches the decisions you want to make repeatedly for dozens of hours.
2. What do you want to collect and develop?
There are several different meanings of "collection" in role-playing games. You might recruit interchangeable monsters, assemble a party of classes, customize a small cast of named companions, or gather equipment and abilities. Treating all of these as the same system can lead to the wrong purchase.
Nintendo confirms that Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake lets you select companions by vocation, recruit friendly monsters and enter Monster Arena tournaments. That is a meaningful monster-recruitment feature, but the available description does not establish that the game is a full creature-collection RPG with the breadth or structure of a dedicated monster-battling series.

Larian instead emphasizes character creation and party development in Baldur’s Gate 3. Its official page highlights 12 classes, 11 races, 46 subclasses, more than 600 spells and actions, and seven Origin characters with their own agendas and storylines. These are publisher-provided feature counts, not a quality score. The game’s central collection decision is usually which heroes, classes, abilities and relationships you bring into an encounter rather than building a roster of recruitable monsters.
3. Do you want an authored quest or a story shaped by choices?
Nintendo presents Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake around a straightforward premise: the child of Ortega sets out to finish the failed mission to defeat Baramos. The hero’s journey gives the adventure a clear objective and a traditional fantasy structure.
Larian describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as an expansive story in which every choice drives the story forward and leaves a mark on the world. Its seven Origin characters have individual agendas and storylines, while your decisions can affect relationships and the legacy your character leaves behind. This is a design emphasis, not a promise that every choice produces a completely different game.
If you want to role-play a specific personality and see consequences unfold, the choice-driven structure is the more relevant fit. If you prefer a clearly stated mission and a classic heroic arc, the inherited quest premise may be more appealing.

A spell, ability or movement decision can matter because of where it is used, which ally acts next and what the surrounding space allows.
The game is based on D&D 5e rules, but the relevant buying question is not whether you already know tabletop rules. It is whether you enjoy pausing to inspect possibilities, coordinating several characters and accepting that a clever plan can be more valuable than a routine attack.

Larian’s official page lists 12 classes and 11 races, expanded by 46 subclasses. It also lists more than 600 spells and actions. These counts describe the breadth of the available systems; they do not mean every option is available immediately or that every combination is equally suitable for every encounter.

You can also choose among seven Origin characters, each with a personal agenda and storyline. That makes party selection a narrative decision as well as a combat decision. You may bring a companion because of the abilities they offer, because you want to see their arc, or because your character’s choices fit their outlook.
Story and multiplayer
Larian describes an expansive, choice-driven narrative in which decisions leave a mark on the world and define your legacy. This makes the game a natural candidate for players who want dialogue, relationships and role-playing choices to carry as much weight as combat preparation.
Online multiplayer supports up to four players according to Larian. Confirm how your chosen platform handles online access and account requirements before inviting friends, since those practical details can vary by platform.
Release and purchase details
Steam lists Baldur’s Gate 3 with a release date of August 3, 2023, and identifies Larian Studios as both developer and publisher: Steam store listing. PlayStation’s US page lists the game for PS5 and describes content including violence, nudity and strong sexual content: PlayStation PS5 page. Check the rating information for your own region because classifications and storefront labels can differ.
Larian’s official page lists Standard, Digital Deluxe and Physical Deluxe Edition purchase options: official game page. That confirms that a physical deluxe product exists, but it does not establish current stock, price, seller or availability in your country. Verify those details with the retailer before ordering.

Combat for classic role-playing-game fans
Nintendo describes the remake as using classic turn-based gameplay. You issue commands to a party, use each member’s vocation-specific abilities and exploit enemy weaknesses. The structure suits players who enjoy preparing a party, choosing a reliable set of actions and seeing a battle resolve through familiar role-playing-game rhythms.
The combat description does not document the same kind of environmental interaction or positional initiative that Larian highlights for Baldur’s Gate 3. That distinction is useful: choose this game for a classic command structure, not because the shared turn-based label guarantees identical tactics.

Vocations, friendly monsters and the Monster Arena
Party members are selected by vocation, giving you a way to customize the group’s roles. Nintendo also confirms that friendly monsters can be recruited and that Monster Arena tournaments are available. Those systems add a collection and side-activity layer without proving that the entire game is built as a full creature-collector.
If your priority is recruiting some monsters while still playing a traditional party RPG, this is the better-supported match of the two examples. If you require a game whose main loop is filling a large creature catalogue, look for more specific documentation before purchasing; the available Nintendo description does not establish that scope here.
Story structure
The remake follows the child of Ortega, who sets out to complete Ortega’s failed mission to defeat Baramos. Nintendo’s description presents that premise as a clear heroic quest rather than a branching account of many player-defined legacies. Choose it when a focused objective and classic adventure framing sound more appealing than extensive character-choice systems.
Platform and edition details
Nintendo’s US product page lists a Switch release date of November 14, 2024. It says the game is supported on Switch 2 and notes a Switch 2 update with graphical improvements and frame-rate and graphics options: Nintendo US product page.
The Nintendo page labels the shown edition as digital. Do not treat that listing as evidence that a physical Switch copy is available. Check the storefront and edition shown for your region, particularly if you need a cartridge, a specific language version or Switch 2 features.
Nintendo lists the game as one-player on one system. That makes it a solo purchase rather than an online cooperative option comparable to the four-player online support Larian describes for Baldur’s Gate 3.

Choose Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake when classic structure and selective recruitment come first
- You prefer a familiar command-based battle flow and learning enemy weaknesses.
- You want to customize a party through vocations.
- You want some friendly-monster recruitment and Monster Arena tournaments, without assuming the game is a complete creature-collection substitute.

Choose neither solely because it is called turn-based

A purchase checklist that prevents mismatches
- Write down your non-negotiable system. Confirm whether you need PS5, PC, Switch or Switch 2 support. Use the official platform pages rather than assuming availability from a search result.
- Define your preferred battle decision. If you want environmental and initiative-based tactics, prioritize the systems Larian documents. If you want menu commands, vocation roles and weakness targeting, prioritize Nintendo’s classic structure.
- Define collection precisely. Decide whether you mean recruitable monsters, class and vocation customization, named companions or equipment. The games satisfy different meanings of the word.
