Start with the date you need the money: choose a Treasury bill that matures on or before that date, with enough time for the proceeds to reach where you need them. If the date could change, keep that cash in a shorter bill or split it across maturities rather than locking all of it to one date.
What a Treasury bill maturity means
Treasury bills are short-term U.S. government securities sold at a discount or at face value. At maturity, the Treasury pays the bill’s face value; the difference between what you paid and face value is interest, paid at maturity. The auction sets the rate for that bill. See the TreasuryDirect overview of Treasury bills and its guide to pricing and interest rates.

Standard terms are 4, 6, 8, 13, 17, 26, and 52 weeks. A shorter term returns the money sooner and gives you an earlier opportunity to decide what to do with it. A longer term keeps it invested longer at the rate set for that bill. If you repeatedly buy short bills, the rate at each future auction is unknown until then, so the eventual return can change as you reinvest.

- Write down the amount and date. Treat a firm bill, tuition payment, tax payment, or planned purchase as a cash deadline, not merely a rough month.
- Separate money you may need sooner. Do not commit emergency funds or cash for near-term expenses to a bill that could mature too late.
- Check actual dates, not just the term label. Choose a bill whose maturity date is on or before your planned cash date, leaving room for weekends, bank processing, and any transfer. Treasury’s regular 4-, 6-, 8-, 13-, 17-, and 26-week bills are auctioned weekly; 52-week bills are auctioned every four weeks. Confirm the specific auction and maturity dates on the TreasuryDirect bill information and current auction calendar.
- Check where the bill will be held. Verify how and when maturity proceeds will be delivered, whether reinvestment is enabled, and any intermediary requirements or charges.
If you have expenses on several dates, dividing the money among bills with different maturity dates can spread when proceeds become available. This is a way to manage timing, not a guarantee of a better return.

Choose shorter or longer based on flexibility and rate certainty
| Choice | What it means for your cash | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Shorter bill | Money matures sooner, giving you another chance to use it or choose a new investment. | If you reinvest, the next auction rate is not known in advance. |
| Longer bill | Money remains invested longer, with the auction rate fixed for that bill’s term. | The money is not due at maturity until later; a cash need before then may require an early sale. |
| Several maturities | Proceeds become available at more than one date. | Splitting maturities helps with timing but does not ensure the best return. |
The useful question is not which term will outperform: future auction rates are not established in advance. Choose around your cash date and how much uncertainty you can accept about the rate on any later reinvestment.
Understand access before maturity
TreasuryDirect says, “You can hold a bill until it matures or sell it before it matures.” Selling early is not the same as withdrawing cash from a bank account: Treasury says an early sale must be arranged through a bank, broker, or dealer, and the amount received can differ from holding to maturity because it depends on market price and transaction terms. See TreasuryDirect’s rules for selling a marketable security.
A security held in TreasuryDirect must remain in the account for 45 days before it can be sold or transferred. Because a 4-week bill matures before that holding period ends, a TreasuryDirect-held 4-week bill cannot be sold or transferred before maturity. If early access matters, check the rules and sale route for the account where you plan to hold the bill before buying.

If you have not selected reinvestment, TreasuryDirect says it automatically pays the maturity value to your account’s Certificate of Indebtedness or designated bank account on the maturity date. Check the destination and reinvestment setting in advance; the relevant details are on TreasuryDirect’s page about redeeming Treasury marketable securities.
TreasuryDirect lists a $100 minimum purchase, in $100 increments. It also says bill interest is federally taxable and exempt from state and local taxes. Individual tax circumstances can affect reporting, so consult a qualified tax professional for personal tax guidance.

Treasury’s published formula is: Price = Face value × (1 − (discount rate × time) / 360). As an illustration—not a current rate quote—Treasury shows a $1,000 26-week bill at a 0.145% discount rate costing $999.27 and paying $1,000 at maturity, a $0.73 difference. The example is presented without a publication year on Treasury’s pricing and interest rates page.
