For home running, prioritize a comfortable running deck, a stable frame, enough room for safe access, and training settings that match your workouts. Then compare warranties, delivery and return terms, and any paid subscriptions. Consumer Reports’ 2025 guidance recommends a deck at least 60 inches long for a folding treadmill intended for running, particularly for taller users; individual fit still depends on your stride and the specific machine.
Start with the running surface and your stride
A treadmill can have impressive features and still feel wrong if the belt is too short or the surrounding frame interrupts your stride. Consumer Reports recommends a running deck of at least 60 inches for folding treadmills used for running, especially for taller runners. Treat that as a useful buying benchmark, not a universal minimum for every runner or model.

If you can try a machine before buying, run at your usual pace and check whether you can move naturally without approaching the motor housing. Notice the cushioning, whether the side rails are easy to straddle, and whether the controls are reachable without changing your form. If you cannot test it, compare the manufacturer’s stated deck dimensions with a treadmill you already know fits you.
Measure the room, including clearance
Measure the treadmill’s operating footprint and the space needed to approach and leave it. Consumer Reports gives an average treadmill footprint of 77 inches long by 35 inches wide and advises allowing at least 2 feet on either side and 6 feet behind for access and safety. These are general planning figures; follow the selected model’s installation instructions and account for the room’s doors, walls, and other equipment.

For a folding model, check the folded dimensions and height as well as the open footprint. Folding can make storage easier, but it does not remove the need for safe access while running, and the machine still needs a place to be stored and unfolded.
Choose folding or nonfolding based on how you will run
Nonfolding treadmills
Nonfolding models generally have sturdier frames and longer, larger running surfaces. They are a strong option for frequent runners who have a dedicated workout area and value a stable feel over compact storage.

Folding treadmills
Folding models can suit rooms where storage matters, but some have shorter decks or lower weight limits. Check the specific model’s running-deck dimensions, user-weight limit, folded footprint, and stability rather than assuming every folding design has the same trade-offs.

Consumer Reports describes 10–12 mph as a typical top-speed range for most treadmills and 10–15 percent as a typical incline range. Those figures are general guideposts, not promises about any particular machine. Verify the specifications for the model you are considering and choose settings that cover your actual workouts, including intervals or hill sessions if you use them.

Check safety and everyday usability
- Safety key: Confirm the tethered key is present and works; it should stop the treadmill if you move away from the console.
- Footrails: Check that the side footrails feel stable and are easy to step onto when mounting or stopping.
- Controls: Make sure speed and incline controls are easy to reach and understand while moving.
- Stride clearance: Ensure the motor housing does not crowd your natural running stride.
Under-desk treadmills are generally walking-focused. A short deck can make them unsuitable for running, so do not choose one for regular runs unless its dimensions and intended use genuinely match your needs.

Look beyond the checkout price. Delivery, in-home assembly, returns, and retrieval of a large machine can affect the real cost and effort of ownership. Read the seller’s current terms before ordering, including whether return shipping or pickup carries a fee.

Consumer Reports’ subscription comparison guidance is a starting point, but confirm the selected model’s current terms with its manufacturer or seller.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Measure your available floor space and the access clearance around the treadmill.
- Choose a deck length and layout that allow your natural stride; use the 60-inch guidance for folding running treadmills as a benchmark, especially if you are tall.
- Decide whether storage needs justify a folding model, then verify its folded dimensions and weight limit.
