A deepfake-audio detector’s score is not yet a verdict: a threshold turns it into a bona fide or spoof decision, and moving that threshold changes which errors you accept. Choose it against held-out development data and the costs of false alarms versus missed fakes—not from a benchmark score alone. The threshold can matter as much as model quality for a particular deployment, but it is not universally more important than the model.
What a detection threshold does
A detector produces a continuous score. A threshold converts that score into a class label or action. Depending on the score direction and label convention, scores above the threshold may mean “more likely bona fide” or “more likely spoof.” Check the model’s documentation and output before interpreting the result.

The ASVspoof evaluation code treats bona fide audio as the positive class and assumes higher countermeasure scores support the bona fide hypothesis. Application code may instead define spoof as positive. Reversing that convention without changing the comparison logic reverses the meaning of false acceptance and false rejection. The official implementation emphasizes that evaluation should use real-valued soft scores rather than hard decisions alone: ASVspoof 2021 evaluation metrics code.
How to select a threshold in Python
- Collect continuous scores and labels. Use bona fide and spoof examples representative of the audio your application will encounter. Confirm the score direction and define what counts as a positive class before calculating metrics.
- Reserve development data for threshold selection. Sweep candidate thresholds on this held-out set and record how many spoof samples are accepted as bona fide and how many bona fide samples are rejected as spoof.
- Choose an operating point that matches the use case. Set an explicit constraint or cost objective—for example, limiting one type of error—then select a threshold that meets it. Do not select a threshold on the final evaluation set.
- Evaluate the selected threshold on separate data. Report the threshold, evaluation population and conditions, both class-specific error rates, and why that operating point was chosen.
- Break results down by relevant conditions. Check performance across tasks, codecs, or transmission conditions when those are relevant, not just in a pooled total.
This illustrative sketch shows the comparison, not a tested detector or a universal threshold. Its inequality assumes scores increase with spoof likelihood and that labels use 1 for spoof; change it if your model uses the opposite convention.

Equal error rate (EER) identifies the point where false-rejection and false-acceptance rates are closest. The ASVspoof implementation returns the EER and its corresponding threshold, making it useful as a conventional comparison point. It is not a default production threshold: the two error types may have different consequences, and real operating conditions may differ from the evaluation set. Accuracy alone can conceal the behavior that matters. If one class dominates the data, a classifier can score well by favoring the majority class; overall accuracy also does not fully describe a detector used inside automatic speaker verification. Report false acceptance and false rejection rates alongside the test population and conditions. When to consider t-DCF
If the spoof detector is a countermeasure in a cascade with automatic speaker verification, tandem detection cost function (t-DCF) can evaluate the combined system while accounting for priors and error costs. Those assumptions affect the result and should be stated. t-DCF is designed for that tandem setting; it is not automatically the right objective for a stand-alone audio classifier. Evaluate the conditions your application will face
A single pooled result can hide uneven performance across audio conditions. ASVspoof 2021 distinguishes logical access, physical access, and speech-deepfake tasks. Its evaluation package supports pooled and decomposed EER and minimum t-DCF, and its logical-access metadata includes codec and transmission-condition information. For model comparisons, use the same held-out samples, score direction, condition breakdown, and threshold-selection procedure for each model. Alongside EER, show false acceptance and false rejection at the chosen operating point. Check how results vary across relevant conditions and whether the chosen threshold remains useful under the application’s error costs; there is no universal threshold-stability criterion established by these sources.

- The detector’s score direction and the class treated as positive.
- How the threshold was selected, including the development data and objective or constraint.
- The selected threshold and false acceptance and false rejection rates on separate evaluation data.
- The evaluation population and relevant task, codec, or transmission conditions, with pooled and decomposed results where available.
- For tandem speaker-verification evaluation, the t-DCF cost and prior assumptions.
