Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To choose a compatible teleconverter, match the exact converter to the exact lens model—and check any camera-body restrictions in the manufacturer’s compatibility chart and manuals. A shared mount or a lens-family name such as “70–200mm” is not enough: some combinations will not physically fit, while others may fit but lose autofocus or other functions.
How do I know if my lens is compatible with a teleconverter?
- Write down the exact models. Record the full camera-body model, lens model and mount, and teleconverter model. Version and mount differences matter even among lenses with similar names.
- Check the converter maker’s official compatibility chart. Find your exact lens, not merely its brand or product family. If the pairing is not listed, check the converter and lens manuals or contact the manufacturer. Do not treat a mount match as proof of compatibility.
- Check body-specific limits. A supported lens-and-converter pairing can still have autofocus or other restrictions on particular camera bodies. Nikon’s AF-S chart, for example, notes autofocus limitations for some combinations and body-dependent support at f/8. For Nikon AF-S converters, Nikon warns that an unlisted NIKKOR lens cannot be used because its rear element may contact and damage the converter element (Nikon AF-S teleconverter compatibility chart).
- Confirm the functions you need. Verify autofocus, metering and exposure control, stabilization, and any relevant autofocus-area or camera-coverage limits for the specific pairing. Sony describes autofocus, operation, and Optical SteadyShot retention only with supported lenses and cameras; use its SEL20TC compatibility information and compatibility tool.
- Work out the practical result. Multiply the lens’s focal length by the converter factor, then calculate the effective maximum aperture. Consider whether the resulting light loss and focusing performance will work for your subject and shooting conditions.
If the official chart or manual does not affirm the pairing, ask the manufacturer before attaching it. Do not assume an adapter, stacked converters, or a converter from another brand will make an unverified combination safe.

What changes when you add a teleconverter?
A teleconverter increases a lens’s effective focal length, but it also reduces the light reaching the camera. The figures below are manufacturer specifications and guidance, not independent test results.
| Converter factor | Focal-length change | Typical light loss |
|---|---|---|
| 1.4x | Multiply focal length by 1.4 | About one stop, according to Nikon and Sony manufacturer guidance (Nikon; Sony) |
| 1.7x | Multiply focal length by 1.7 | 1½ stops, according to Nikon (Nikon teleconverter guidance) |
| 2x | Double focal length | About two stops, according to Nikon and Sony manufacturer guidance (Nikon; Sony) |
For example, Sony says its SEL20TC 2x converter turns an F2.8 maximum aperture into an effective F5.6. With less light, you may need a slower shutter speed or higher ISO, and autofocus behavior can change. A converter also does not automatically deliver the same performance as a dedicated longer lens; Nikon notes potential sharpness trade-offs in its teleconverter guidance.

- Use with tripod & phone cage: Use a tripod to reduce shake and blur; secure lens with NEEWER 17mm thread cage or case; set max zoom to activate telephoto lens; compatible with iPhone, disable Macro Control and cover extra lenses to stop auto switching
How should I compare compatible options?
If the manufacturer confirms more than one option for your equipment, compare the combinations rather than assuming one converter is best for every lens.
- Reach: Compare the focal-length increase from 1.4x and 2x options.
- Light and exposure: Check the effective maximum aperture and the resulting light loss against the shutter speeds and ISO your subjects allow.
- Autofocus and body support: Read the chart for restrictions on your exact camera body, not just the lens pairing.
- Metering and stabilization: Confirm that the functions you rely on are supported for that combination.
- Image quality: Account for possible sharpness or contrast trade-offs; compatibility alone does not establish image quality.
- Practical value: Consider size, cost, and whether the converter is officially compatible with other lenses you own. A product listing by itself is not proof of a supported pairing.
Where to check by camera system
Manufacturer documentation is specific to mount, converter generation, lens version, and sometimes body. These examples show why checking the exact model matters; they are not a complete compatibility list.

- The 2X Teleconverter can make the focal length of all the Canon EF lenses increased to 2 times, Built-in 4 groups, 7 pcs optics, and the exposure factor enlarge approx 4. (equals to 2 aperture).
- Compatible for Canon EF Mount Lens.[Notice:It only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 100mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, EF 70-200mm f/4L, and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L.]
- Support lens Auto Focus function.Outstanding image quality thanks to new optical design and improved AF performance. The focus speed is really fast and can track the subject, and lock the subject flexibly and accurately.
- Lens coatings are optimized to minimize ghosting and flare. With the aperture adjustment lever on the adapter, you can adjust the aperture fast.
- With an upgraded USB firmware interface, it supports USB firmware upgrading, and through subsequent upgrades, the adapter can improve its function, and fix bugs.
Nikon F-mount and Z-mount
Nikon’s AF-S F-mount chart lists supported lenses and limitations; it explicitly excludes unlisted NIKKOR lenses because rear-element contact can damage the converter. For Z-mount, Nikon advises checking the lens manual because not every Z NIKKOR is compatible. Nikon describes one-stop loss with 1.4x and two-stop loss with 2x converters. Consult the relevant AF-S compatibility chart, Nikon Z teleconverter guidance, and the manuals for your exact equipment.

Canon RF and EF
Canon’s RF1.4x page lists supported RF lens models and directs users to the lens and/or camera manual for full compatibility information. Its list includes a particular version of the RF 70–200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z; do not extend that listing to every RF 70–200mm lens. For EF 1.4x III and EF 2x III extenders, use Canon’s compatibility chart rather than inferring support from the EF mount. See Canon’s RF1.4x supported-lens information and EF extender support information.

Sony FE
Sony’s SEL14TC provides 1.4x conversion, while the SEL20TC provides 2x conversion. Sony limits supported operation, including autofocus and OSS retention, to compatible lenses and cameras. Check the current SEL20TC compatibility information and Sony’s compatibility tool before choosing either converter.
Sigma
Sigma publishes separate compatibility documentation for different teleconverter generations and restricts each converter to lenses listed in its chart. Do not treat a Sigma converter as a generic accessory for another brand’s lens. Check Sigma’s teleconverter compatibility chart for the exact converter generation and lens.
