What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose a controller for the device it must control—not just one that connects by Bluetooth or USB. Console compatibility is platform- and model-specific, and PC support can also depend on the game. Check the exact controller, connection method, and games you plan to play before buying.
Start with the device you want to control
First identify the console or computer the controller must work with. Then confirm that the exact controller model is documented for that platform. A controller that pairs with a phone or PC is not automatically supported by a Switch, PS5, or Xbox console.

For PC, check support for each intended game and its launcher. Sony notes that DualSense support on PC varies by game. Microsoft’s Windows guidance lists DualShock 4, DualSense, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers as options, but some PlayStation controller and game combinations may need Steam Input or DS4Windows for full compatibility. These are setup possibilities, not guarantees for every title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Switch: Confirm whether you have a standard Switch setup or a Switch Lite, and check Nintendo’s instructions for the exact controller model.
- PS5: Confirm support for the PS5 itself if that is where you plan to play; PC compatibility does not establish console compatibility.
- Xbox: Check the controller’s documentation for your Xbox generation or Windows PC. Do not infer support for one Xbox model from support for another.
- PC: Check the game and launcher as well as the operating system. Pairing successfully does not ensure that every game will recognize the controller or its features.
Choose a connection that fits the physical setup
Controllers may connect by USB, Bluetooth, or a platform-specific wireless connection. Verify that the console supports the method you intend to use and whether it requires a cable, adapter, or licensed accessory. Think about where the console sits, whether you play handheld or docked, available ports, and cable reach.

Switch and Switch Lite
Nintendo provides instructions for pairing the Switch Pro Controller and describes wired communication. For wired Pro Controller use with Switch Lite, Nintendo says a licensed accessory is required and gives the HORI Dual USB PlayStand as an example. Check Nintendo’s Pro Controller support instructions before choosing a wired setup. For pairing steps, use the Nintendo controller-pairing FAQ for your model.
PS5 and PC
Sony documents connecting a DualSense controller to a PC, while warning that support depends on the game. If you intend to use one on PC, check the requirements for the games and launchers you use rather than assuming all titles support it. See PlayStation’s PC gaming guidance.

Xbox and Windows PC
Check the exact controller’s listed connection methods and platform support. For an accessibility-focused setup, Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller documentation lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC support, with Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity. See the Xbox Adaptive Controller specifications.
Check game support and controller features
Platform recognition is only one part of compatibility. A game may support basic inputs while not using every feature available on the controller. Do not assume that headset jacks, haptics, adaptive triggers, motion controls, or remapping work identically across consoles, PC games, or launchers unless the relevant platform or game documentation confirms it.

On PC, look up the specific game and launcher before relying on a controller. If a PlayStation controller does not work as expected, Microsoft’s Windows guidance notes that some combinations may require Steam Input or DS4Windows for full compatibility. Whether either option helps depends on the particular game and setup.
Account for accessibility and input needs
There is no single controller shape or input method that suits every player. Consider the physical controls and connection options that work for the person using the setup. Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller is an option to investigate for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC users who need an adaptive setup; check its documentation and any additional components needed for the intended configuration.

Compare the practical buying criteria
After confirming compatibility, compare the factors that matter in your own setup. Price, comfort, battery life, latency, and durability are useful criteria, but they should be assessed from current product details or reliable comparisons rather than assumed from a controller’s brand or connection type.

How many wireless controllers can a Switch use?

Do not assume an adapter makes a controller compatible
Cross-console adapter support is not established by a general claim that an adapter connects over USB or Bluetooth. Compatibility and retained features can depend on the exact adapter, controller model, firmware, and platform. Before buying, look for current documentation from the adapter maker that names your particular combination.
