Choose a strategy game by its pace and scale: turn-based games give you discrete windows to plan, real-time strategy (RTS) games keep events moving as you act, and 4X games focus on building an empire through exploration, expansion, resource use, and conflict. These labels describe different things, so they can overlap: a 4X game can be turn-based, for example.
What do turn-based, real-time, and 4X mean?
Turn-based strategy
In a turn-based strategy game, play is organized into discrete turns. You make decisions during your turn, then advance the game state. That structure creates pauses between decision windows, though the details of what you can do in each turn vary by game. Millennia describes its historical 4X experience as “Turn by Turn, Age by Age.” Millennia’s official site

Real-time strategy (RTS)
An RTS world advances continuously while you build, manage resources, and command units. You make decisions while circumstances keep changing. The official Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition guide puts it plainly: “As a Real-Time Strategy game, you build and expand your empire as you see fit while the world advances around you.” Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition

4X strategy
4X describes an empire-building loop: explore, expand, exploit resources, and exterminate or otherwise overcome rivals. It is about the kind of strategic activity a game emphasizes, not necessarily whether its clock runs in turns or continuously. Stellaris is described as a “4X Grand Strategy game,” while Millennia combines 4X with turn-by-turn play. Stellaris Millennia

Grand strategy
Grand strategy often means governing a large-scale polity or empire through long-term development and diplomacy. It can overlap with 4X, but it is not a strict synonym: Paradox describes Stellaris as a grand strategy adventure and also labels it 4X. Paradox’s Stellaris page

How to compare games within a genre
- Pace and pressure: Decide whether you want pauses to plan between turns or a world that advances continuously. Age of Empires II guide Millennia official site
- Scale: Look at whether the focus is on commanding units and developing a position, or governing an empire over a longer horizon. Stellaris’s official description foregrounds empire-building, exploration, and diplomacy. Stellaris
- Strategic emphasis: Check how much the game centers on economy, exploration, diplomacy, and combat. The cited Stellaris description highlights diplomacy and galactic exploration; the Age of Empires guide emphasizes building and expanding while the game advances. Stellaris Age of Empires II guide
- Attention style: Continuous play asks you to respond while events progress; turn-based play gives you discrete decision windows. This follows from the games’ described pacing, not from a measured comparison of cognitive load.
Why the labels can be confusing
Turn-based and real-time describe pacing; 4X and grand strategy describe strategic scope or emphasis. A game can therefore fit more than one label. Instead of treating the terms as competing boxes, use them as clues: first decide whether you want continuous action or turns, then whether you want unit-focused battles, empire-building, diplomacy, or some mix.
