Choose a stock alert app by checking whether it covers your securities, supports the exact trigger you need, and explains when and how it checks prices. “Real-time” is not a standardized guarantee: one app documents minute-by-minute checks during exchange hours, while other services describe alerts without comparable latency evidence. Start with your brokerage app if its alerts meet your needs; choose a standalone app when its watchlist tools or alert rules solve a specific gap.
Decide whether you need a standalone app
Brokerage apps can keep watchlists, account holdings, and alerts together. Robinhood documents alerts for watched or held stocks, ETFs, and crypto, while Fidelity and Schwab describe notification features in their apps. A separate service may be useful if it offers a particular trigger, watchlist organization, or alert control your brokerage does not.

Match the trigger to what you want to notice
“Price alert” can mean several different rules. Verify the exact condition in the app rather than assuming it supports every kind.

- Indicator condition: Some apps offer rules based on indicators as well as price. Robinhood documents indicator alerts; confirm the available indicators and settings in the current app.

Coinbase states that a price alert is only a notification that an asset reached a certain price; it does not place an order and is not investment advice. An alert is a prompt to check conditions, not a trade, reserved price, or guarantee that you will receive a particular execution price.
Find out what “real-time” means in practice
Ask how often the app checks its trigger, when checks run, and what market data the rule uses. A vendor’s description is not the same as independent evidence of delivery speed, uptime, or quote accuracy.

Stock Alert’s documentation says an enabled realtime alarm is monitored every minute during exchange opening hours. Its end-of-day setting is checked once after market close per trading day. Check delivery channels and notification controls
A useful trigger is only useful if you receive it in a channel you notice. Confirm which channels are available and whether you can adjust alert frequency or disable default notifications.

Notification defaults matter. Verify coverage, devices, and changing terms
Before building a watchlist, check that the service supports each intended ticker, exchange, and security type. A vendor’s broad category description does not guarantee every symbol is covered. Also check whether the features you need work on your phone, tablet, watch, or web interface; evidence for one device should not be read as confirmation for another.

- Does the app cover all intended symbols, exchanges, and security types?
- Can it trigger on the specific condition you need: fixed price, percentage move, indicator, or trailing rule?
- How often does it check, during what hours, and what data does it use?
- Can it deliver by push, email, text, or in-app notification, and can you control frequency?
- Are alerts enabled by default, and can you pause, edit, or delete them?
- Does it work on your device, and what alert and watchlist limits apply to free and paid tiers?
Choose based on fit, not a speed claim
Use your brokerage’s alerts when the documented triggers and channels are enough and you prefer keeping the workflow in one account. Consider a standalone app when a concrete feature—such as a trailing rule, separate watchlist tools, or a needed notification control—is missing from the brokerage option.
The available product descriptions do not establish a comparative ranking for latency, reliability, quote accuracy, privacy, or security. Check each app’s current privacy policy, requested permissions, notification controls, and account-linking practices rather than inferring a winner from feature lists.
