For a student-scale solar car, choose the panel and motor as a matched pair: the panel must provide enough usable power for the motor in the light you expect, while the motor, gears, wheels and car weight determine how the vehicle moves. Start with your project scale and event rules, then compare component specifications and test the complete drivetrain. There is no one panel wattage, motor voltage or gear ratio that suits every build.
Start with the car’s scale and rules
This guide is for a small model car, such as a classroom project or Junior Solar Sprint entry. Component sizes and examples for model cars do not transfer to full-size road vehicles or collegiate solar race cars.

Before buying parts, identify the event and read its current rulebook. Rules can differ even between model-car competitions: some restrict energy storage, while others require battery backup for poor weather. For example, the Rochester Institute of Technology Dubai competition specifies one panel and one motor, secure panel mounting, no energy storage during a race, remote control, and maximum dimensions of 30 cm wide × 60 cm long × 30 cm high. Those limits apply to that competition, not to solar cars generally. Read the RIT Dubai competition requirements.

Treat that as guidance for that program, not a universal parts list. Check the Junior Solar Sprints resource. Full-size event regulations are a separate category: the Solar Car Challenge links its 2027 rules and updates for teams to check. Consult the Solar Car Challenge rules page.

Match the panel’s output to the motor
Compare the panel’s stated electrical output with the motor’s operating requirements before choosing either part. The panel has to supply adequate power for the motor under the lighting conditions in which you will run the car; a rating alone does not establish that a panel and motor are compatible. Check the actual specifications for both components and consider whether the event limits the number of panels or permits stored energy.
No single panel rating or motor voltage is established as best for all DIY solar cars. Without named components and their specifications, recommending a universal wattage or voltage would be guesswork. RIT Dubai’s judging guidance explicitly includes compatibility between the solar panel and motor. See the competition’s judging criteria.

Choose the drivetrain for the whole car
A suitable motor can still produce a poor-running car if its gearing, wheel size or chassis does not suit the course. Gear ratio affects the balance between torque and speed; the car’s mass, rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag also influence how it performs. Select gears using the motor and wheels you actually plan to use rather than treating motor choice as a standalone decision.

Decide between a kit and a scratch build
A kit can simplify sourcing by bundling some or all of the panel, motor, gears, wheels, axles and chassis parts. Check the exact contents and component ratings before purchasing; a kit’s inclusion of parts does not guarantee compliance with your event or compatibility with a different motor or panel.
A scratch build lets you choose components individually and make a chassis from suitable household or recycled materials. You will also need to plan for axles, bearings, wheels and tires, as well as secure panel mounting. Science Buddies describes both kit-based and scratch-built approaches and names Solar Made kits as one sourcing option. Avenues in Motion’s parts list is another event-specific reference, rather than a promise of current availability. See the project’s kit and build guidance or review the Junior Solar Sprints parts reference.

Compare candidate setups before buying
If you are choosing among several possible builds, compare the factors that affect both compatibility and practical use:
- Electrical match: panel output against the motor’s stated requirements.
- Drivetrain: gear ratio in relation to wheel size, torque and target speed.
- Vehicle load: total mass, rolling resistance and, where relevant, aerodynamic drag.
- Fit and mounting: physical dimensions and a secure way to attach the panel.
- Included parts: whether gears, wheels, axles and chassis are supplied or must be sourced separately.
- Rule compliance: limits on size, motor or panel count, remote control, backup batteries and energy storage.
Build, secure and test the car
- Confirm the rules: use the current requirements for your particular class or event, including dimensions and power-storage rules.
- Check the component specifications: compare the chosen panel’s stated output with the motor’s operating requirements and verify that the parts can be used together.
- Assemble the drivetrain: fit the motor, gears and wheels, keeping the car’s mass and rolling resistance in mind.
- Mount the panel securely: follow the event’s mounting requirements so it stays attached during a run.
- Test and adjust: run the model on a flat, sunny paved area. Change one factor at a time, such as gearing or wheel size, and record what changes. Keep clear of the car while it is moving quickly.
These steps are for model builds. If the project is a full-size vehicle or collegiate race car, use the rules, engineering requirements and component guidance for that vehicle class instead of scaling up model-car advice.
