What should a smart sensor detect?
Start with the signal you need. A contact sensor reports whether something is open or closed; a motion sensor detects movement; a leak sensor detects water; and an environmental sensor measures conditions such as temperature or humidity. These functions are not interchangeable.

Contact: open or closed
Use a contact sensor on a door, window, drawer, or similar object when you want an open/closed state for monitoring or an automation. That state does not prove that a door is locked. Aqara’s Door and Window Sensor P2 is one example of a contact sensor.
Motion: movement
A motion sensor can trigger routines such as turning on lights when movement is detected. Check the individual model’s capabilities and performance; do not assume that detecting motion means it can detect a person who is sitting still.

- ZIGBEE STANDARD COMPATIBLE MOTION SENSOR: Works with compatible Zigbee hubs or Echo devices with Zigbee hub built-in, such as Echo (4th Gen), Echo Plus (1st Gen and 2nd Gen), Echo Studio, Eero 6, Eero Pro 6, Home Assistant, SmartThings 2015/2018, Aeotec, Hubitat, Homey Bridge, Homey Pro, Third reality Hub and Third Reality Smart Speaker. Zigbee Hub Required.
- CREATE ROUTINES: Using the Alexa app, create your own routines that are triggered when motion is detected. Customize Alexa messages like “Welcome Home” or “Motion Detected in Living Room” when motion is detected.
- SMART LIGHT CONTROL: If you have a smart light or smart plug connected to the Alexa service, you can create a routine in the Alexa app that will enable it to automatically turn on when motion is detected (and off when no motion is detected for a period of time that you specify).
- HASSLE-FREE SETUP: Installs in a few seconds. Just make sure device in paring mode and compatible Echo device automatically discovers it by saying “Alexa, discover devices”. Only for indoor use.
- GREAT RANGE AND LONG BATTERY LIFE : Capable of detecting motion up to 20 feet (6 meters) away. 2 AAA batteries can last for 2 years in typical usage.
Water leak: water where it matters
Choose a leak sensor for locations where an unnoticed leak could cause damage. Check how the model detects water and whether its sensing point is on the device or connected through an extension cable if that affects where you need to place it.
Temperature, humidity, and other conditions
Environmental sensors are useful when a measured condition is the input to monitoring or an automation. Confirm the device’s accuracy and that your chosen platform exposes the specific reading you need.
Will the sensor work with your smart home hub?
Before buying, write down your smart-home app or platform, hub, and the radios your setup supports. Then check the sensor’s exact protocol—such as Matter over Thread, Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, or a vendor-specific connection—and whether you already have the controller or bridge it needs. Silicon Labs describes these and other options, including Sidewalk and proprietary technologies, in its smart-sensor connectivity guidance; that vendor overview is not a guarantee that any particular products interoperate.

Do you need a Thread border router?
For Aqara’s Door and Window Sensor P2, yes: Aqara says a “Matter-compatible Thread Border Router is required.” The P2 uses Matter and Thread, so its setup needs both a compatible Matter controller and Thread border-router capability. Matter branding alone does not tell you which transport or infrastructure a specific device requires.
Aqara lists tested examples including Apple TV 4K (2nd and 3rd generations, subject to the model qualifications on its page), HomePod mini, SmartThings Hub v3, SmartThings Station, Echo (4th generation), Nest Hub (2nd generation), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wi-Fi Pro, and Home Assistant Yellow. Check Aqara’s current P2 compatibility information and your platform’s support details before relying on a listed device. Aqara also cautions that functionality, including automation conditions, may vary by ecosystem.
For an open/closed contact-sensing use case, the P2 is one Matter-over-Thread option; confirm your setup has the required controller and border-router capability. It is not a motion or leak sensor.

How much should you really spend on a smart sensor?
Compare the total cost, not just the sensor’s shelf price. Include any required hub, bridge, or Thread border router that your home lacks, plus batteries and any cables or mounting pieces the installation needs. A higher price can make sense if the extra sensing or features solve your particular problem; otherwise, simpler may be better.
T3 reported these example prices in an article published 5 October 2026. They are dated retail examples, not live quotes or a survey of all markets:
| Example sensor | Price reported by T3 (5 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Aqara Multi-State Sensor (P100) | £29.99 / $49.99 |
| Tapo T100 Smart Motion Sensor | £17.99 / $17.99 |
| IKEA Kippbok water leakage sensor | £7 in the UK / $7.99 in the US |
Prices can vary by retailer, location, and time, so check local listings before you buy. T3 writer Lizzie Wilmot’s advice is to avoid paying for features you will not use: “I’d much rather buy something at a lower price that does exactly what I need than spend £50/$75 on a sensor filled with features I’ll never use.”

What features should you look for besides the sensor type?
Power and maintenance
Check whether the sensor is battery-powered or wired, the battery type, how easy it is to reach for replacement, and the manufacturer’s runtime claim and test conditions. Battery life depends on factors including transmit power, receiver sensitivity, data rate, range, number of network nodes, and battery capacity, according to Silicon Labs’ technical guidance. There is no universal runtime established for consumer sensors here; do not treat component-level “up to 10 years” statements as a typical sensor lifespan.
Placement and detection
Think about whether the sensor will fit where it needs to go, whether its radio signal can reach the hub or network, and whether its sensitivity or accuracy suits the task. For example, a sensor’s published temperature accuracy matters if you plan to use its reading to control a routine. Check product specifications and practical reviews, while distinguishing reported experience from measured product testing.

App features and local operation
Confirm that your platform exposes the sensor’s readings or state and supports the specific automation conditions you need. Do not assume every ecosystem offers the same functions for a compatible device. If you want automations to work without an internet connection, verify whether the particular model and platform can run that automation locally or whether it relies on cloud services.
Quick Recap
A quick pre-purchase checklist
- Name the signal: open/closed, movement, water, temperature, humidity, or another defined measurement.
- Check the connection path: confirm the protocol, hub or controller, any bridge or Thread border router, and app support for the function you want.
- Calculate total cost: add necessary infrastructure, batteries, and installation accessories to the sensor price.
- Review upkeep and placement: consider power, replacement access, radio coverage, fit, and task-specific sensitivity or accuracy.
- Verify operation: check ecosystem-specific automation support and whether the desired routine depends on the internet or cloud.
