How to Choose a Smart-Home Hub: Matter, Thread, and Compatibility Explained

Pick a smart-home hub by platform first, then check whether your Matter devices use Wi-Fi or Thread and whether the exact hub supports their required functions.

Choose a hub for the smart-home platform you plan to use, then verify that it supports the wireless connection your devices need. A Matter controller manages Matter devices in an app; a Thread border router connects Thread devices to the home’s IP network. Some products do both, but Matter support alone does not guarantee Thread support.

Do you need a hub for Matter?

Usually, you need a compatible Matter controller for the smart-home platform and app you want to use. For Google Home specifically, Google says a Matter-enabled hub must be set up on the home wireless network before you can add Matter devices: Google’s Matter preparation guide.

The hub is not necessarily a standalone box. A compatible speaker, display, router, or streaming device may already serve as the platform’s controller. Check the exact model in the platform’s current documentation rather than assuming every device in a product family has the same capabilities.

What do Matter controller and Thread border router mean?

Matter controller

Matter is an interoperability standard for smart-home devices and platforms. A Matter controller is the platform’s control point: it lets a compatible app set up and manage supported Matter devices. Each platform has its own compatibility requirements and supported device functions.

Thread border router

Thread is an IPv6 wireless mesh used by some Matter devices. Apple’s developer guidance defines the network role clearly: “A Thread Border Router connects a Thread network to other IP-based networks, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet.” See Apple’s Matter accessory interoperability guidance.

A Thread border router provides network connectivity for Thread devices; it is not another name for a Matter controller. One product can combine both roles, but a controller that supports Matter over Wi-Fi may not route Thread devices.

Example What the documentation says What to verify
Google Home and Nest Google lists some Matter hubs as Wi-Fi-only and others as supporting both Wi-Fi and Thread. Its list includes Nest Audio, Nest Mini, first-generation Nest Hub, and Nest Wifi Pro in the Wi-Fi-only section; it also lists Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer (4K) as supporting Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread. The page also includes Google Home Speaker (2026). Look up the exact device and function in Google’s current Matter hub list. Nest Wifi Pro’s appearance in both sections illustrates why you should check the listed capability, not infer it from the product name.
Amazon Echo and eero Amazon’s Thread support page, updated May 1, 2026, lists built-in Thread border routers including Echo (4th gen), Echo Hub, selected Echo Show and Echo Studio models, Echo Dot Max (2025 release), and selected eero models. It identifies Thread versions 1.1 or 1.3 for the listed categories and models. A Thread border-router listing does not by itself establish identical Matter-controller functions across all listed models. Check Amazon’s Thread support documentation and the model’s Matter support.
SmartThings SmartThings says its 2015 Hub supports Matter over Wi-Fi/LAN but does not include a Thread router. It also says some older SmartThings and Aeotec hubs gained Matter support through firmware updates. For a Thread device, add a compatible Thread border router if the existing hub lacks one. Confirm model and firmware in SmartThings’ Matter integration guide.

For device categories, Amazon documents support for hubs, lighting and smart plugs, generic buttons, sensors, locks, window coverings, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, certain appliances, and robotic vacuums. Category support does not mean every device feature appears in every platform. Check Amazon’s supported Matter categories and clusters and confirm the specific functions you need.

How to choose a hub: a compatibility checklist

  1. Choose the main platform. Start with the app and household ecosystem you expect to use, such as Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home, or SmartThings. Check that platform’s current list of compatible Matter controllers.
  2. Inventory devices you already own. A speaker, display, router, or streamer may already provide hub functions. Verify its exact model and supported roles before buying another device.
  3. Check each accessory’s connection. Matter over Wi-Fi devices need the home Wi-Fi network. Matter over Thread devices need a Thread border router. If you use both, Google advises using a hub that also acts as a Thread border router; see Google’s Matter preparation guide.
  4. Confirm device categories and functions. Verify that the platform supports the accessory type and the specific controls you care about. The Matter label alone does not promise identical feature coverage in every app.
  5. Check setup and network prerequisites. Google’s setup guidance lists IPv6 on the home Wi-Fi network and Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or later for commissioning from a mobile device. Follow Google’s current setup instructions for the app, phone, network, and hub you plan to use.
  6. Follow the accessory maker’s setup guidance. TP-Link recommends starting setup for its Matter devices in Tapo or Kasa to ensure access to full features, while also documenting setup in third-party Matter apps. Its compatibility information was collected in March 2026, so consult TP-Link’s Matter setup guide for device-specific instructions.

What if you want to use more than one smart-home app?

Matter multi-admin can let a supported device be controlled from multiple compatible smart-home apps. Each platform needs its own compatible Matter hub, and the device must be shared with the other platform through its multi-admin setup. Google describes the process and requirement for Google Home alongside Apple Home, Alexa, and other certified apps in its Matter setup and management guide.

Which hub should you choose?

There is no universal best hub. Compare the candidates that fit your household on these points:
