1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a sleeping bag whose tested comfort or lower-limit rating is colder than the lowest overnight temperature you expect, then pair it with a sufficiently insulated sleeping pad. Use the comfort rating if you tend to sleep cold and the lower-limit rating if you tend to sleep warm. A lab rating is useful for comparing bags, but it cannot guarantee that you will feel warm in every set of conditions.
What temperature sleeping bag do you need?
Start with the coldest overnight low you reasonably expect, not the average temperature for the trip. As practical starting points, REI recommends choosing a car-camping bag with a rating 10–15°F below the expected low; its winter-camping guide recommends a bag rated at least 10°F below the coldest anticipated temperature. These are retailer guidelines, not guarantees of comfort. The right buffer also depends on whether you sleep cold or warm and which rating the bag actually publishes.

For example, REI’s camping guide says that someone expecting lows near 30°F may be most comfortable with a 15°F or 20°F bag. Treat that as an illustration of the buffer, not a universal prescription. [REI’s sleeping-bag buying guide; REI’s winter-camping guide]
Comfort and lower-limit ratings are not interchangeable
Standardized EN and ISO testing can give a bag both a comfort rating and a lower-limit rating. The comfort rating represents the threshold associated with a cold sleeper; the lower-limit rating represents the threshold associated with a warm sleeper. If you are unsure which describes you, favor the comfort rating for a more conservative choice.

Check the detailed specifications rather than relying on the temperature printed in a product name. A number without a clear comfort or lower-limit label may be a manufacturer estimate, not a directly comparable standardized test result. Not every bag is rated: the standard does not apply to children’s bags or bags designed for extreme cold, and some casual-use bags are not tested. [REI’s temperature-rating guide]
Use ratings as a comparison, not a promise
Lab testing uses a dressed test dummy on a pad, so it cannot reproduce every person, clothing setup, meal, sleeping pad, weather pattern, or campsite. Your warmth depends on the whole sleep system and your own comfort. When comparing bags, make sure you know which rating is being shown and avoid treating an unqualified temperature claim as equivalent to a tested comfort rating.

Choose insulation for the conditions you expect
| Insulation | Advantages | Trade-offs | Often a sensible fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Down | Light for its warmth and highly compressible; performs well in dry cold. | Can lose much of its insulating ability when wet, so keeping it dry matters. | Backpackers who prioritize low weight and packed size and can manage moisture. |
| Synthetic | Generally less expensive, dries faster, and retains insulation better than down when damp. | Usually heavier and bulkier than down for comparable warmth; fibers can lose heat-trapping performance after years of compression. | Campers concerned about damp conditions or budget, especially when packed size and weight matter less. |
Neither fill is best for everyone. The choice follows from the trade-offs: down can suit dry trips where carrying less matters, while synthetic can be a practical choice when moisture risk or cost weighs more heavily. [REI’s sleeping-bag buying guide]

Car-camping bags can prioritize room and comfort because you do not have to carry them far. Backpacking bags generally have to balance warmth with weight and packability. Consider how much room you need: mummy bags are narrow, while semi-rectangular and rectangular shapes offer more space for sleepers who move around. Double bags are another option for two people, if the design suits your setup.

A sleeping bag’s warmth rating assumes an insulating pad beneath you; REI’s pad guide says the assumption is an R-value of 4. Higher R-values indicate better insulation from the ground. Its broad guidance bands are:

| Pad R-value | REI guidance |
|---|---|
| Below 2 | Warm weather |
| 2.0–3.9 | Cool weather |
| 4.0–5.4 | Cold weather |
| 5.5 or greater | Extremely cold weather |
These are guidance ranges, not a guarantee that a particular sleeper will be comfortable. For winter camping, REI recommends two full-length pads: closed-cell foam against the ground with a self-inflating pad above it. The foam layer adds insulation and serves as a backup if an inflatable pad is damaged. Ed Zebrowski, REI Co-op product information specialist, puts the priority plainly: “Winter camping is when you need to really pay attention to insulation ratings.” The R-value guidance was updated April 22, 2025. Account for clothing, liners, and pad reliability
Think of warmth as a combination of bag, pad, and sleep clothing rather than expecting the bag alone to solve every cold-night problem. A liner is optional: REI gives a broad estimate of about 5–25°F of added warmth, but that range is not a guaranteed result for every liner or sleeper. Check the liner’s own specifications and treat it as an addition to—not a substitute for—a suitable bag and pad.
If you are taking an inflatable pad into winter conditions, the foam-pad backup recommended above provides insulation if the inflatable is damaged. [REI’s winter-camping guide]
A practical checklist for comparing bags
- Find the published comfort and lower-limit ratings, and identify whether the claim is standardized or a manufacturer estimate.
- Compare the relevant rating with the trip’s coldest likely overnight low, leaving a buffer suited to your sleeping temperature preference.
- Choose down or synthetic based on moisture exposure, carrying weight, packed size, and budget.
- Decide whether you need a roomier car-camping bag or a more packable backpacking design; check shape and fit.
- Verify the hood, zipper draft tube, and shoulder draft collar in the product specifications.
- Pair the bag with a pad suited to the conditions; for winter, consider two full-length pads as REI recommends.
