For a spade or hoe, choose a metal file suited to working metal and follow the blade’s existing edge: keep the file flat on a spade and match the slight slope on a hoe if it has one. A file is not the right default for every garden tool. Secateurs and loppers usually call for a diamond sharpener, whetstone or sharpening steel, while some shears are best assessed for professional sharpening.
Choose the sharpener by tool and edge
The right sharpener depends on the tool’s blade geometry, not simply on whether it is used in the garden. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) distinguishes cultivation blades from pruning blades in its hand-tool sharpening advice.

| Garden tool | Suggested sharpener | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Spade | Metal file | Keep it flat against the typically flat blade and avoid thinning the blade excessively. |
| Hoe | Metal file | Follow the existing edge; some hoes have a slight slope. |
| Secateurs | Diamond tool, whetstone or sharpening steel | For a single-bevel blade, sharpen the angled face only; remove the burr from the flat face without sharpening it. |
| Loppers | Diamond tool, whetstone or sharpening steel | When dismantling is possible, follow the blade’s bevel. If it cannot be dismantled, an accessible handheld sharpener may work. |
| Garden shears | Maker-specific sharpener, if supplied; otherwise seek an assessment or professional service | Some are difficult to sharpen, especially if the blades do not separate or are very blunt. |
For a spade or hoe, look for a metal file for garden tools that fits the blade and lets you control the stroke. Flat-edged mill saw files are one category listed in Bahco’s file catalogue; the RHS and Bahco sources do not establish one file length, tooth cut or model as best for every cultivation tool.
Sharpen a spade or hoe without changing its edge
- Secure the tool. Clamp the shaft in a workbench vice so the blade faces up and cannot move while you file.
- Match the existing angle. Keep the file flat against a spade. On a hoe with a sloping edge, follow that slope rather than imposing a new bevel.
- Work slowly along the cutting edge. File nicks away from your body with consistent strokes. Remove only what is needed to restore the edge; making the blade too thin can weaken it.
- Remove the burr. Turn the tool over and run the file along the top of the blade until the thin lip left by filing is gone. Do not sharpen the opposite face as though it were a second bevel.
- Refine if needed. A whetstone can be used after filing to refine the edge.
The RHS puts it plainly: “Spades tend to be flat so keep the file flat, whereas some hoes may have a slight sloping angle.” The key is to follow the edge the tool already has rather than changing its geometry.

Use a different method for pruning tools
Secateurs and loppers
For secateurs and loppers, use a diamond tool, whetstone or sharpening steel rather than defaulting to a flat metal file. On a single-bevel blade, sharpen only the angled face, then remove the burr from the flat face without sharpening that face. Sharpening both sides can spoil the blade’s intended cutting action.
If loppers can be dismantled, access may make it easier to follow the bevel carefully. If they cannot, choose a handheld sharpener that can reach the blade while allowing controlled strokes.

Garden shears
Check whether the maker supplies a dedicated sharpener. Some shears are awkward to sharpen, particularly when the blades do not come apart or have become very blunt; in those cases, an assessment by a tool workshop or professional sharpener is more suitable than forcing a DIY repair.

The RHS says most cultivation blades generally need sharpening once or twice a year, depending on use and damage. Treat that as a broad maintenance estimate, not a fixed schedule: inspect the edge and adjust for how often the tool is used and what condition it is in. The RHS also notes that some damage is too severe to correct at home; send a badly damaged tool to a tool workshop or professional sharpener.

Keep chainsaw files separate from hand-tool files
A chainsaw chain uses a specialized filing system, not the general recommendation for spades and hoes. STIHL’s chainsaw guidance explains that the round file must match the chain design for sharpening cutters, while a flat file is used for the depth gauges. Do not transfer chainsaw file sizes to garden hand tools.
