Choose a self-tanner by checking its active ingredient and label directions, then picking a format you can apply carefully to the areas you want to cover. DHA is a common sunless-tanner color additive: it darkens the skin’s surface without creating a UV tan. Lotions, creams, and sprays are all available, but FDA and dermatology guidance do not establish one format as universally better, longer-lasting, or safer. Whatever you choose, apply it evenly, avoid inhaling or getting DHA near your eyes, lips, or other mucous membranes, and continue using sunscreen.
Start with what a self-tanner does
A DHA self-tanner changes the appearance of the skin’s surface; it does not produce a tan by exposing skin to ultraviolet (UV) rays. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as a color additive commonly used in sunless-tanning products. DHA reacts with amino acids at the skin’s surface, darkening the outer skin cells. The apparent color typically lasts several days.

As the FDA puts it, “Sunless tanning delivers a faux glow by coating your skin with the chemical dihydroxyacetone (DHA).” The resulting color is a cosmetic effect, not a sign that the skin has developed UV protection. It also is not the same as a temporary bronzer that washes off over time.
Most sunless tanning sprays and lotions do not contain sunscreen. A product offers sun protection only if it contains sunscreen ingredients and is labeled with an SPF. Do not assume that a tanned appearance means your skin is shielded from sunlight.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) presents self-tanner as an option for people who want a tanned appearance while continuing to protect their skin. The Academy also states that tanning from UV exposure or an indoor tanning salon damages the skin. A self-tanner changes the look of skin without serving as a substitute for sun protection.
Which self-tanner format should you choose?
FDA identifies lotions, creams, and sprays among the available self-tanner formats. That establishes what forms consumers may encounter, not how they compare in performance. The FDA and AAD guidance does not provide head-to-head product testing showing that any format produces a more even color, lasts longer, or is safer in every situation.
| Format or product type | What is established | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Lotion | FDA lists lotions as a form of sunless tanner. Comparative performance is not established in its guidance. | Consider whether you are comfortable spreading the product over the areas you want to cover, and follow its label directions. |
| Cream | FDA lists creams as a form of sunless tanner. The guidance does not establish that cream is better or worse than lotion. | Choose based on the product’s instructions and whether its application method suits the areas you plan to treat. |
| Spray or mist | FDA lists sprays among self-tanner forms and cautions against inhaling DHA or exposing it to eyes, lips, or other mucous membranes. | Make exposure control a central part of the decision. Use the product only as directed and take care to prevent inhalation or contact with sensitive areas. |
| Bronzer | FDA says “bronzer” is not a legally defined category. The word commonly refers to temporary color, such as tinted moisturizer or powder, that washes off over time. | Do not assume a bronzer works like a DHA self-tanner. Check what the product is and how its label says to use it. |
For any format, think about the area you intend to treat and whether you can apply the product in sections with controlled, circular motions. That is an application approach recommended by AAD, not proof that a particular format guarantees an even result. Read the specific product label: directions can differ from one product to another, and FDA advises following them carefully.

When comparing products, start with the actual task rather than assuming that a particular texture or package is inherently superior. Are you treating a small area or applying product over larger sections? Can you comfortably reach and cover the areas you intend to tan? Are you able to follow the directions and control where the product goes? These questions help you choose a manageable application method without turning preference into an unsupported performance claim.

The product label is also part of the comparison. Check what kind of product it is, its ingredient list, and its application directions. Do not transfer instructions from one item to another just because both are lotions, creams, or sprays. FDA advises consumers to follow the product’s label carefully, and individual directions may differ.
When a spray needs extra care
FDA says DHA is intended for external application. It should not be inhaled or ingested, and should not be applied to mucous membranes, including the lips and the area in and around the eyes. Sprays and mists can make it more difficult to keep product away from those areas and out of your breathing passages. If you cannot use a spray while controlling that exposure, consider a format you can apply more directly instead. This is a practical exposure consideration, not a claim that another format is universally safer.
Exposure precautions matter whether a spray is used at home or in a spray-tanning setting: the key point is to prevent DHA from being inhaled or contacting the eyes, lips, or other mucous membranes. Follow the product’s directions, and do not use a spray in a way that makes those precautions difficult to maintain. The guidance does not establish that a specific spray technique or device eliminates exposure, so avoid relying on an unverified promise of complete protection.

Check the ingredient information without overreading it
Look for the product’s current ingredient list and directions before choosing. DHA is the key color additive to recognize in a product intended to create a DHA sunless tan. Other ingredients vary by product, and the FDA and AAD guidance does not support ranking added ingredients by quality, safety, irritation potential, or tanning performance.

- Do not treat “natural” or “organic” wording as proof that a self-tanner is safer or performs better; the guidance does not establish that.
- Do not assume two products have the same formula because they use the same format. Check each product’s own ingredient list and label.
- If you have an individual medical concern or experience an unexpected reaction, do not try to diagnose it from a general ingredient comparison. Seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
Ingredient information can help you identify what is in a particular product, but it does not by itself establish how that formula will perform for you. The available guidance does not compare individual added ingredients or provide a way to predict a person’s response from broad marketing terms. Keep claims tied to the specific product label, and seek qualified advice for a personal medical question rather than relying on a general guide.
Also distinguish DHA self-tanner from bronzer. FDA describes bronzer as a loose, commonly used term for temporary color products such as tinted moisturizers or powders that wash off. A bronzer’s immediate, washable color should not be confused with DHA’s surface-darkening effect, which typically lasts several days.
How to apply self-tanner evenly
AAD recommends preparing the skin and applying self-tanner methodically. The steps below follow its consumer guidance; the product label still takes precedence if it gives different directions.

- Dry your skin. Apply the product to dry skin rather than starting while the skin is still wet.
- Work in sections. Treat one area at a time—for example, arms, legs, then torso—and massage the product in a circular motion.
- Wash your hands after each section. Use soap and water to help prevent stained palms.
- Blend at wrists and ankles. Lightly blend toward the hands and feet so the transition at those areas is less abrupt.
- Use less product on joints. Lightly rub elbows, knees, and ankles with a damp towel, or apply a thin layer of lotion over the self-tanner, to dilute the application there.
- Let your skin dry before dressing. Wait at least 10 minutes. For the next three hours, wear loose clothing and try to avoid sweating.
- Keep up sun protection. Use sunscreen as appropriate even if your skin now looks tanned.
The sequence is useful because it turns application into a series of manageable areas: prepare and dry the skin, apply to one section, wash your hands, then move on. Pay particular attention to the places AAD calls out—hands, wrists, ankles, elbows, and knees—rather than treating the application as one quick, uninterrupted step. The guidance recommends circular motions and lighter or diluted application around joints; it does not promise a flawless result or prescribe a specific amount of product.

An application mitt is an optional convenience for spreading product across sections. AAD’s guidance supports working section by section; it does not say a mitt is necessary or that one produces a better result. A self-tanner application mitt may be useful if you prefer using one to spread the product, but it is an accessory, not a requirement. Choose whether to use one based on your preference, not as a condition for even application.
Protect your skin from UV exposure
Do not rely on a self-tanner for sun protection unless the product also contains sunscreen ingredients and is labeled with an SPF. FDA notes that most sunless tanning sprays and lotions do not contain sunscreen. A tanned appearance does not show that skin is protected from UV rays.
AAD recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Follow the sunscreen’s own label directions, and continue using sun-protective measures even when you have applied self-tanner. The appearance change from DHA and protection from sunscreen are separate things: one is cosmetic color, while the other is protection identified by sunscreen ingredients and an SPF label. As AAD advises, “You still need to protect your skin with sunscreen.”

A practical decision checklist
- Want a DHA sunless tan? Check the ingredient list for DHA and read the product’s directions.
- Choosing among lotions, creams, and sprays? Pick a format you can apply carefully to the intended areas; available guidance does not establish a universal winner.
- Considering a spray or mist? Make sure you can prevent inhalation and keep product away from eyes, lips, and other mucous membranes.
- Looking for quick, washable color? A product called a bronzer may be a temporary-color product rather than a DHA self-tanner; check its label and do not assume the terms mean the same thing.
- Want an even application? Exfoliate, dry the skin, apply in sections with circular motions, and take extra care around hands, wrists, ankles, and joints.
- Need sun protection? Use a sunscreen labeled with an SPF. Do not infer protection from the color of a self-tan.
In short, the best choice is the product whose label and application method you can follow while keeping DHA away from areas where it should not go. There is no established universal winner among the listed formats. Make the choice based on your intended application, the product-specific directions, and your ability to apply it carefully; keep sunscreen separate in your plan unless the product is actually labeled with an SPF.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply self-tanner evenly?
AAD recommends exfoliating first, drying your skin, and applying in sections with circular motions. Wash your hands after each section, blend lightly at wrists and ankles, and dilute product on elbows, knees, and ankles with a damp towel or a thin layer of lotion. Wait at least 10 minutes before dressing; for the next three hours, wear loose clothing and try to avoid sweating.
Which self-tanner format should I use?
FDA lists lotions, creams, and sprays, but its guidance and AAD’s application guidance do not establish one format as better, longer-lasting, or safer in every situation. Choose a product you can apply carefully to the areas you want to cover and follow its label. Sprays and mists require particular care to avoid inhaling DHA or exposing your eyes, lips, or other mucous membranes.
Does self-tanner protect you from the sun?
Usually, do not assume that it does. FDA says most sunless tanning sprays and lotions do not contain sunscreen. A product provides sun protection only if it contains sunscreen ingredients and is labeled with an SPF. AAD recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher.
How long does a DHA self-tan last?
The FDA says the apparent color from DHA typically lasts several days. The guidance does not establish that one format lasts longer than another.
Is a bronzer the same as a DHA self-tanner?
No. FDA describes “bronzer” as a commonly used, not legally defined term for temporary color products such as tinted moisturizers or powders that wash off over time. DHA self-tanner darkens the skin’s surface and typically lasts several days. Check the product label to understand what you are buying.
Do I need an application mitt?
No. A mitt is an optional convenience if you prefer it for spreading product. AAD recommends applying in sections with circular motions but does not say a mitt is necessary or produces a better result.
The Bottom Line
Choose a self-tanner by its ingredient list, label directions, and how carefully you can apply it—not by assuming one format is best. DHA creates temporary surface color, not UV protection. Apply in sections using AAD’s preparation and blending steps, take extra care with sprays, and continue using broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher.
