An agent that browses, clicks, types, or uses apps can encounter malicious instructions in ordinary webpages, emails, documents, images, and interfaces. Favor tools that limit access to what the task needs, require specific approval for consequential actions, and let you inspect what happened.
Why computer-using agents need extra scrutiny
A conventional chatbot mainly returns text. A computer-use agent can combine model output with tools that navigate websites, interact with applications, download files, or submit information. If it follows an instruction hidden in content it processes, the consequences can reach your accounts, data, or other people.

Prompt injection is a form of social engineering: someone places instructions in content the agent reads in an attempt to redirect its behavior. Treat outside content as untrusted even when it appears relevant to your task. The risk is not limited to deliberate attacks: NIST also identifies software vulnerabilities, data poisoning, specification gaming, and harmful actions caused by misaligned objectives. Its January 12, 2026 announcement describes autonomous actions that can affect real-world systems; it announced work toward voluntary guidance, not a finished consumer certification or product ranking.

Permissions: give access only to what the task needs
Before choosing an agent, list the files, accounts, websites, and actions required for the job. Prefer a product that lets you grant access to those resources individually, withhold unrelated accounts, and separate reading from writing. If a task only requires summarizing a document, it should not need permission to send email or change files. OpenAI’s guidance on resisting prompt injection advises limiting data access and giving explicit, narrow instructions rather than broad discretion.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Read-only access is preferable when changes are unnecessary. For work that does not require a signed-in account, use a logged-out or minimally connected mode. The smaller the agent’s permission scope, the less it can expose or alter if it is manipulated.
Isolation and network controls
Check whether the agent runs in a sandbox or another restricted environment, and what happens when it attempts to reach an unexpected resource or transmit information. Useful safeguards block or surface unexpected access and communication for your consent. Ask whether you can stop a task promptly, rather than assuming a sandbox or security label covers every integration.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Approval before consequential actions
Look for a pause before the agent sends a message, submits a form, makes a purchase, or modifies data. Approval is more meaningful when it is tied to the specific action and shows its target, recipient, and the information involved—not when it is a blanket permission granted at the start. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet recommends authorization and approval checks for the exact action; its example also uses fail-closed behavior for unknown tools. Anthropic similarly recommends human confirmation before irreversible actions in its computer-use guidance.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallProtection against instructions in content
Ask what defenses apply when a webpage, email, or interface contains instructions aimed at the agent. Prefer layered protections: narrow tool permissions, isolation, checks on communications, user approval, activity logs, and a way to stop execution. A detection classifier can help, but it is not a guarantee and its availability can depend on the exact tool integration. Anthropic says classifiers run automatically with its official computer_20251124 API tool, but not with custom computer-use tools. Verify the current behavior for the product and integration you plan to use.

Activity history and data handling
Choose an agent that makes its actions reviewable, so you can investigate unexpected behavior. Find out what it records—including screenshots, prompts, connected data, and action history—how long records are retained, and who can access them. A privacy or security label alone does not answer those questions for every product configuration.
A practical selection process
- Define the task. Write down the minimum files, accounts, websites, and actions it requires. Mark which actions must be read-only.
- Check the permission controls. Confirm that the agent can be limited to the required resources and that unrelated accounts or write access can remain off.
- Identify high-impact actions. Note anything that sends information, submits a form, makes a purchase, or changes data. Check whether the agent previews the exact action and target and waits for your approval.
- Consider hostile content. Ask what happens if a page, email, or document tries to redirect the agent. Check which protections apply to the precise product and integration, not merely to a vendor’s different API or official tool.
- Review containment and visibility. Look for sandboxing, controls on unexpected communications, an activity history, and a clear way to stop the agent.
- Check retention and access. Determine what content and screenshots are stored, for how long, and who can see them in your chosen configuration.
- Test with low stakes. Start with a task that uses minimal access and does not make changes or send information. Expand permissions only if a real task requires it.
How to compare candidates without a false winner
There is no established universally safest consumer computer-use agent or independent, current head-to-head ranking in the cited guidance. Vendor pages describe their own systems; treat their feature statements as product claims, not independent comparative test results. Compare candidates against the same task and the same questions:

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key NFC via USB-A and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate.
- Can you scope access to particular resources and separate reading from writing?
- Does the agent run in a restricted environment, and are unexpected access or network actions blocked or surfaced?
- Does it ask for approval before consequential actions, with the target and details visible?
- Do prompt-injection protections apply to the exact integration you will use?
- Can you review what it did and understand what data or screenshots it retains?
- Can it complete your task without broad access to email, files, or other accounts?
One reported test result should not be mistaken for a general safety score. OpenAI says an example prompt-injection attack reported by external researchers worked 50% of the time in a particular 2025 test using a specific email-research prompt. That result describes that example and setup only; it is not an attack-success rate for other agents or tasks.
