How to Choose a Router for Your Home, Plan and Devices

The best router depends on your home layout, internet plan and devices. These five 2026 picks cover standalone, budget, mesh and gaming needs.

The right router depends on your home, internet plan and connected devices—not just a Wi-Fi generation or a big speed number. For a smaller, open home, a standalone router is usually the simpler choice; for multiple floors or persistent dead zones, a mesh kit can provide more consistent coverage. Here are five current options, each tied to a specific category in a named 2026 review, plus the trade-offs that matter before you buy.

Five routers for different needs

These picks come from two review publishers with different testing methods and category systems, so they are not a head-to-head ranking. Tom’s Hardware selected models for its 2026 roundup; RTINGS’ recommendations were updated September 22, 2026. Prices and availability change, and the sources do not establish a consistent current price for every model.

Need Pick Why it fits What to consider
Standalone, full-featured TP-Link Archer BE9700 Tom’s Hardware names it its best Wi-Fi router for 2026. Its roundup notes a 10 Gbps WAN/LAN port and four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports. Multi-gig ports are useful only if your internet service, modem and wired devices can take advantage of them.
Budget standalone TP-Link Archer BE3600 Tom’s Hardware names it its budget router. It lacks the 6 GHz band. Check the exact model and current price before buying; the roundup’s cited price is time-sensitive.
Mid-range standalone TP-Link Archer BE550 RTINGS lists it as a lower mid-range pick. TP-Link specifies tri-band Wi-Fi 7 and one 2.5 Gbps WAN port plus four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports. Its extra band and multi-gig ports may be underused with older devices or a slower plan.
Mesh for dead zones or larger homes TP-Link Deco 7 Pro BE63 RTINGS moved it to its Best Mesh category in its September 22, 2026 update. Confirm the pack size and number of nodes for the listing you are considering; the cited category does not establish a universal coverage guarantee.
Gaming and high performance TP-Link Archer GE800 Tom’s Hardware names it its best gaming Wi-Fi router and notes three-band Wi-Fi 7 and two 10 GbE ports. It is specialized and may be excessive if you do not need gaming-focused functions or multi-gig wired networking.

Tom’s Hardware reports that ASUS ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro achieved over 3.5 Gbps on 6 GHz at close range in its 2026 benchmark. That is a test result under its conditions, not a promise of internet speed throughout a home. It is a possible mesh alternative if you want to compare another publisher’s pick, but its result should not be treated as directly comparable to RTINGS’ category selection.

Choose standalone or mesh based on your floor plan

When one router is enough

A standalone router is often the straightforward option in a smaller or open home where one centrally placed access point can reach the rooms you use. NETGEAR describes its standalone Nighthawk models as suitable for smaller or mid-size homes with fewer walls. That is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that a particular router will cover a particular floor plan.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

When mesh is worth considering

Consider mesh when a single router leaves dead zones, the home spans multiple floors, or walls and distance make coverage inconsistent. NETGEAR positions Orbi mesh systems for larger or multi-floor homes. A mesh kit adds access points around the home, but the right number and placement depend on the layout; buying a larger advertised coverage figure alone does not resolve interference or poor placement.

Match the ports to your plan and wired equipment

Check the WAN port (the connection from modem or service equipment to the router) and the LAN ports (connections to wired devices). A 2.5 Gbps or 10 Gbps port matters when the connected service or client can use more than gigabit Ethernet; it does not raise a slower internet plan to that speed. The Archer BE550 has one 2.5 Gbps WAN and four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports, while Tom’s Hardware reports the Archer BE9700 has a 10 Gbps WAN/LAN port and four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports.

  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

For wired multi-gig links, cable quality and run length matter too. NETGEAR says Cat 6 can handle 10-Gig speeds for most home runs and recommends Cat 6A or higher as a safe choice for longer runs. Treat that as manufacturer guidance and check the requirements of the equipment and installation at hand.

What Wi-Fi 7 does—and does not—mean

Wi-Fi 7 features only help when client devices support the corresponding features. TP-Link also notes that 320 MHz channels may be unavailable in some regions because of regulation. Even with compatible equipment, throughput and coverage vary with client limitations, building materials, obstacles, network conditions, traffic density and device location; TP-Link specifically lists these factors for the Archer BE550.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps | Reliable Performance, Easy Set Up, 20 devices, 4× Gigabit Port, Dual Band, AX1800
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Do not read a router’s advertised combined Wi-Fi rate as the speed a single device will receive from your internet provider. The result for a client depends on its supported bands and capabilities, distance, obstacles, congestion and the plan’s actual connection. RTINGS’ 2026 roundup says some Wi-Fi 7 routers do not meaningfully improve on good Wi-Fi 6 hardware, and its picks span mesh, standalone and budget categories. The useful upgrade is the one that fixes your actual limitation, not the newest label.

How to choose among the five

  1. Identify the problem. If the issue is weak signal in distant rooms or across floors, compare mesh systems; if coverage is already adequate, focus on ports, features and the plan.
  2. Check the bottleneck. Confirm the speed and port capabilities of your internet service equipment, router clients and wired devices. Buying faster ports will not speed up a slower link.
  3. Check device compatibility. Make sure the phones, computers and other clients you want to benefit from Wi-Fi 7 support its relevant features.
  4. Compare testing in context. Review near- and far-range measurements, latency, and the test setup where available. Results from different publishers are not a single standardized comparison.
  5. Verify the exact listing. Confirm model number, region, mesh pack size, current price and firmware/security support for that model before purchase. The roundups cited here do not establish end-of-support dates for every candidate.

RTINGS says it bought and tested more than 30 Wi-Fi 7 routers for its 2026 recommendations and has tested more than 60 routers since beginning router reviews in 2024, using a standardized testing platform. These counts describe RTINGS’ own testing program, not a guarantee that every model or home has been covered.

Price, security and regional checks

Router prices and stock are volatile, and the cited roundup prices are not a reliable current quote. Check the exact SKU in your country and compare the cost of any mesh pack with the number of nodes included. Also verify firmware and security support for the exact model and region: the cited sources do not provide an end-of-support date for every candidate. For the Archer BE550, TP-Link says HomeShield’s basic plan is included and fees apply to its Pro plan.
