How to Choose a Router for Network-Wide DNS Filtering

The key to network-wide DNS filtering is LAN DHCP support for advertising your filtering resolver. This guide explains router selection, Pi-hole setups, IPv6 and DoH bypasses, firmware checks, validation and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a router that can advertise a custom DNS server through LAN DHCP. That single capability lets a separate resolver such as Pi-hole serve most devices automatically. Do not mistake the router’s WAN DNS field, DNS-over-TLS encryption, or a public DNS preset for network-wide filtering: they operate at different points in the DNS path.

Before buying, verify the exact hardware revision and firmware, IPv4 and IPv6 DNS behavior, client DNS-over-HTTPS controls, and whether you will run the filter on separate hardware or on the router itself. Those checks matter more than a router’s advertised Wi-Fi speed.

What the router must do

A separate DNS filter works when client devices are told to use its stable LAN address. The router’s DHCP server supplies that address when phones, computers, televisions and other clients request network settings. Once configured, clients send DNS queries to the filtering resolver, which answers allowed domains and blocks domains on its configured lists.

Pi-hole describes this as the normal way to make a network take advantage of Pi-hole: give the Pi-hole host a stable address, then configure the router’s LAN DHCP service to distribute that address as DNS. Devices that obtain their configuration from the router need no individual DNS edit.

The essential buying question is therefore not “Does this router support custom DNS?” It is “Can this router advertise my chosen DNS server to LAN clients over DHCP, and does it do so for every protocol the clients use?”

WAN DNS and LAN DHCP DNS are different

A router normally exposes at least two DNS-related areas:

  • WAN or Internet DNS: the resolver used by the router for its own upstream requests, or the resolver it uses when forwarding client queries. Changing it does not necessarily change the DNS server address that clients receive.
  • LAN DHCP DNS: the DNS address handed to clients during DHCP. This is the setting that points devices at a separate Pi-hole or another filtering resolver.

A router can use a preferred public resolver on its WAN connection while continuing to advertise itself as DNS to clients. Conversely, it can advertise Pi-hole to clients while Pi-hole forwards permitted queries to an upstream resolver. Read the exact manual for the LAN DHCP field; a WAN setting with similar wording is not a substitute.

How to evaluate a router before purchase

1. Confirm custom DNS in LAN DHCP

Look for a setting under labels such as LAN, DHCP Server, Local Network or Network Settings. You need fields that let you enter a chosen IPv4 DNS address, rather than only selecting the router itself or a fixed public service.

Reserve the filtering host’s address in the router’s DHCP reservation list, or configure a static address on the host in a way that cannot conflict with the DHCP pool. Pi-hole’s hardware guidance requires a static address; a reservation is an acceptable way to keep that address stable.

2. Check IPv4 and IPv6 advertisement

Many routers let you set an IPv4 DNS server but continue advertising a different resolver over IPv6 Router Advertisements or DHCPv6. A client with both protocols may choose the IPv6 resolver, making filtering appear inconsistent.

The documentation available for this guide does not establish IPv6 behavior for a particular model. Check the candidate router’s manual and test the intended firmware. Verify whether it can advertise your filtering resolver over IPv6, disable unwanted IPv6 DNS advertisements, or provide an equivalent IPv6 configuration. Do not assume that entering one IPv4 address covers IPv6 clients.

3. Investigate DNS-over-HTTPS bypass controls

DHCP supplies a default DNS path; it does not force every application to use it. Some browsers, operating systems and other clients can enable DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) independently. ASUS support documentation warns: “Some clients will automatically switch to DNS over HTTPS, bypassing your preferred DNS servers.”

Some routers include a control to prevent client auto-DoH under particular operating modes. Treat that as a conditional feature, not a universal guarantee. Confirm which devices and firmware versions it covers, and test browsers and operating systems you actually use. A router that merely advertises custom DHCP DNS but offers no way to detect or manage bypasses may not deliver the consistency you expect.

4. Decide where filtering will run

You have two broad choices:

  • Separate host: run Pi-hole on a small Linux computer or other compatible hardware. The router remains the DHCP server and advertises the host’s address.
  • Router-hosted service: install a filtering application on configurable router firmware. OpenWrt documents an AdGuard Home integration, but its setup can change how dnsmasq runs and which address is advertised to clients.

The separate-host design isolates filtering from router firmware updates and makes migration easier. It does require the host to stay powered and reachable. The on-router design removes a separate box, but consumes router resources and depends on firmware packages, ports and configuration details. Verify the instructions for the exact OpenWrt release or other firmware you intend to run; installing an application alone does not prove that DHCP is advertising it correctly.

5. Verify exact model, hardware revision and firmware

Features can vary by model, regional edition, hardware revision and software release. Search the manufacturer’s support pages for the complete model identifier, not just a product family name, and read the manual for the firmware branch you will use.

For example, ASUS documents its DNS-over-TLS feature as requiring firmware later than 3.0.0.4.386.4xxxx. That is a requirement for that ASUS feature, not a general standard for routers. Do not infer that another model, region or vendor has the same capability.

Three workable network designs

Design A: Separate Pi-hole host with router DHCP

  1. Install Pi-hole on compatible hardware running a supported operating system. Raspberry Pi OS is supported, but a specific Raspberry Pi model is not mandatory; Pi-hole also supports other compatible hardware and operating systems.
  2. Give the host a stable LAN address by creating a DHCP reservation on the router or configuring a non-conflicting static address.
  3. Open the router’s LAN DHCP settings and enter the Pi-hole address as the DNS server offered to clients. Do not change only the WAN DNS field.
  4. Apply the configuration and renew leases or reconnect clients so they receive the new DNS value.
  5. In Pi-hole’s query log, confirm that requests arrive from client devices and that blocked domains are handled according to your lists.

Client queries go to Pi-hole first. Pi-hole forwards permitted requests to its configured upstream resolver and returns the result to the client. This is the simplest pattern when the router can distribute a custom DNS address.

Design B: Pi-hole provides DHCP

If the router cannot set the DNS server offered to clients, Pi-hole documents using its built-in DHCP server instead. Disable the router’s DHCP service first; two active DHCP servers can issue conflicting addresses, gateways and DNS settings.

  1. Record the router’s LAN address, DHCP range and any reservations you need before making changes.
  2. Disable DHCP on the router, leaving its routing and Wi-Fi functions enabled.
  3. Enable Pi-hole’s DHCP service and reproduce the intended address range, gateway and lease settings.
  4. Renew leases or reconnect clients, then verify that Pi-hole is supplying both the network configuration and DNS address.

This workaround moves address management to Pi-hole. If Pi-hole is offline, new clients may not receive network settings, so keep a recovery path and document the router’s original DHCP configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design C: Filtering directly on configurable router firmware

OpenWrt documents AdGuard Home as a network-wide blocking option. The router-hosted approach can be attractive when you want one appliance, but changing the DNS service may affect dnsmasq, listening ports and the address advertised by DHCP.

Follow the current instructions for your OpenWrt release and verify the resulting DHCP option. Check that the filtering service is listening on the LAN interface, that dnsmasq is not competing for the same port, and that clients actually receive the intended DNS address. An upgrade can alter package compatibility or configuration, so retain a backup and a rollback plan.

Filtering, encryption and enforcement are separate decisions

Filtering is a DNS-service function

A DNS filter blocks names according to its configured rules. A router that lets you select a public DNS resolver does not become a filtering service merely because that resolver is fast or popular. The filtering policy must exist in Pi-hole, AdGuard Home or another DNS service designed to block the domains you choose.

DNS-over-TLS protects transport

DNS-over-TLS (DoT) encrypts DNS traffic between the router and the configured resolver. ASUS describes its DoT setting as sending incoming DNS queries to the selected server. Encryption can reduce exposure while queries cross an untrusted link, but it does not add ad or tracker blocking to an ordinary resolver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy settings can also affect general DNS performance, according to ASUS documentation. Decide separately whether you need encrypted transport, domain filtering, or both. A router can provide DoT to an upstream service while clients still bypass your local filter through DoH.

DHCP is not universal enforcement

DNS filtering applies when a client uses the filtering resolver. Devices can bypass it by enabling DoH, manually setting another DNS server, using a VPN or relying on an application-specific resolver. Even when DNS is obeyed, a DNS filter works at name resolution; it does not block every advertisement, tracker or connection, and it cannot inspect all traffic content.

What to compare in a shortlist

Use the same questions for every candidate. A consistent checklist is more useful than a generic “best router” ranking because support changes with firmware and regional variants.

Criterion What to verify Why it matters
LAN DHCP DNS Can you enter a custom IPv4 DNS address offered to clients? This is the normal path to a separate Pi-hole host.
IPv6 DNS Does the router advertise DNS through IPv6 Router Advertisements or DHCPv6, and can you control it? An uncontrolled IPv6 resolver can bypass the IPv4 filter.
DoH controls Does the firmware detect, prevent or document client auto-DoH behavior? Some clients can ignore DHCP DNS.
DNS interception Can the router redirect or otherwise handle clients that manually choose another DNS server? Interception may improve consistency, but availability and behavior are model-specific.
Filtering location Will you run a separate host, an integrated service, or configurable firmware such as OpenWrt? Each option has different uptime, maintenance and recovery requirements.
Firmware support Are the required settings present in the exact hardware revision and current firmware? Feature names and behavior can change between releases.
Recovery options Can you restore a configuration, disable filtering temporarily and regain DHCP if the filter is offline? A failed DNS host should not strand the entire LAN.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the filtering scope. Decide whether you need ordinary domain blocking for home clients, encrypted upstream DNS, stronger bypass resistance, or an on-router installation.
  2. Choose the hosting model. Select a separate compatible host when you want Pi-hole’s established network-wide pattern and independent router replacement. Select router-hosted software only when the firmware and package support are documented for your exact device.
  3. Read the LAN manual before buying. Confirm the path to custom DHCP DNS and whether the interface allows separate IPv4 and IPv6 values.
  4. Check bypass behavior. Look for documented DoH controls, DNS interception or firewall policies. Treat “supports custom DNS” alone as insufficient.
  5. Confirm firmware and region. Record the hardware revision, firmware version and regional software branch. Verify that required features are available in that combination.
  6. Plan failure handling. Decide how clients will behave if the filtering host is down, and keep a way to restore router DHCP or change DNS temporarily.
  7. Test after installation. Renew leases, inspect the DNS address on representative clients, test both IPv4 and IPv6, and review the filter’s query log.

Exact setup and validation checklist

Before changing anything

  • Write down the router’s LAN address, DHCP range, Wi-Fi credentials and existing reservations.
  • Assign or reserve a stable address for the filtering host.
  • Update the router and filtering software through supported, documented procedures.
  • Choose upstream DNS servers in the filtering application and decide whether DoT is required.

After changing DHCP DNS

  1. Save the LAN DHCP configuration and wait for the router to restart its DHCP service if required.
  2. Renew the lease on each test device or disconnect and reconnect it. Existing leases can retain the old DNS value until renewal; Pi-hole’s Fritz!Box guidance specifically calls out lease renewal after changes.
  3. Inspect the client’s network details and confirm that the DNS address is the filter’s LAN address, not the router, an ISP resolver or an unexpected IPv6 address.
  4. Generate a normal DNS request and verify that it appears in the filtering service’s query log.
  5. Test an intentionally blocked domain from a controlled list and an ordinary allowed domain. Confirm that allowed traffic still resolves.
  6. Repeat the checks on a wired client, a wireless client, an IPv6-capable client and a browser with secure-DNS settings enabled.

Troubleshooting common failures

Clients still show the old DNS server

The DHCP lease has probably not renewed. Renew it manually, reconnect the device or restart its network interface. If the old value persists, inspect the router’s active DHCP scope and verify that the edit was made under LAN DHCP rather than WAN DNS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some devices filter and others do not

Compare the DNS addresses and protocols on a working and failing device. An IPv6 resolver, manually configured DNS, VPN or browser DoH may be taking precedence. Correct the IPv6 advertisement where possible and review the client’s secure-DNS setting.

Pi-hole has no queries

Check that the host’s address is stable, the service is running and it is listening on the LAN interface. Confirm that the router is advertising that address and that firewall rules permit LAN clients to reach DNS on the required protocol and port. A client that still uses the router as DNS will not appear as a direct Pi-hole requester.

Internet access stops after enabling Pi-hole DHCP

Two DHCP servers may be active, or the Pi-hole DHCP scope may have the wrong gateway. Disable router DHCP completely, then verify that Pi-hole supplies the router’s LAN address as the default gateway and uses a non-overlapping address range.

Router-hosted filtering conflicts with dnsmasq

On configurable firmware, the filtering service and dnsmasq may compete for DNS ports or advertise different addresses. Follow the release-specific integration instructions, check which process owns the DNS port, and inspect the DHCP option delivered to a test client. Do not assume that a successful package installation changed client DNS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When replacing the router is unnecessary

If the current router can reserve a stable host address and advertise a custom DNS server through LAN DHCP, it may already meet the core requirement. You do not need a new router merely because it lacks a built-in filtering product. A separate Pi-hole host can provide the filtering policy while the existing router continues to route traffic and provide Wi-Fi.

Replacement becomes more compelling when the router cannot set LAN DHCP DNS, cannot control unwanted IPv6 advertisements, lacks the firmware features needed for your chosen on-router service, or offers no practical way to manage bypasses important to your household. Confirm those limitations in the exact model’s manual before spending money.

Limits you should state clearly

  • Network-wide means devices that receive and follow the router’s DNS configuration; it is not a promise that every application obeys it.
  • DoH can bypass preferred DNS servers, and the effectiveness of any router control is conditional on the documented mode and firmware.
  • DoT encrypts DNS transport but does not itself block domains.
  • DNS filtering acts on name resolution, not all advertising, tracking or traffic content.
  • Router capabilities vary by model, hardware revision, region and software version. A feature documented for one ASUS device is not evidence that every ASUS device or another vendor supports it.
  • No single router can be called universally best without a model-by-model compatibility test.

Decision summary

For most households adding Pi-hole, prioritize a router with editable LAN DHCP DNS, reliable address reservations and documented IPv6 behavior. Keep filtering on a separate compatible host when you want an uncomplicated, portable design. Use Pi-hole’s DHCP service only when the router cannot distribute a custom DNS address, and disable router DHCP first. Choose router-hosted filtering on OpenWrt or similar firmware only when you are prepared to manage package, port and DHCP interactions.

Validate the result on real clients rather than trusting the configuration screen: renew leases, inspect IPv4 and IPv6 DNS addresses, check the filter’s query log and test for DoH bypasses. That process tells you whether the router is actually directing the network to the filter.
