Choose a robot vacuum by matching its mapping and obstacle handling, floor-cleaning system, and dock chores to your home—not by picking the biggest suction number. Check how it handles rugs when mopping, what its saved maps let you control, and which maintenance jobs you will still do by hand. Manufacturer specifications can explain features, but they do not establish which model cleans best.
Start with your home’s layout and floor mix
Before comparing models, note how many floors the robot must clean, whether rooms have rugs or carpet, and what objects commonly end up on the floor. These details determine which features matter: multiple saved maps for a multi-level home, obstacle recognition for clutter, and a clear carpet strategy for a vacuum-and-mop combo.

- Layout: Count the levels you want mapped and consider whether room-by-room cleaning and restricted areas would be useful.
- Flooring: Identify where the robot will encounter hard floors, rugs, and carpet, especially if it has a mop.
- Obstacles: Consider the objects that matter in your home, such as cables, toys, or pet waste. Look for obstacle avoidance specifically, not just a mapping feature.
- Upkeep: Decide which manual chores you are willing to do, including emptying dust, handling water tanks, and cleaning pads.
What mapping and navigation features tell you
Mapping lets a robot build a representation of rooms for route planning and map-based controls. Navigation technologies such as LiDAR or laser sensing can support mapping, but the label alone does not tell you how the robot will recognize small objects, pass under low furniture, or cope with clutter.

For example, TP-Link lists LiDAR, gyroscope path planning, and obstacle avoidance on its RV30 Plus product page (TP-Link RV30 Plus). Philips describes 360-degree laser navigation on the XU3110/02 (Philips XU3110/02 specifications). These are manufacturer descriptions, not comparative tests of navigation accuracy.

- A DEEPER CLEAN—EVEN WHERE DIRT LOVES TO HIDE. With advanced DualClean Mop Pads and PerfectEdge technology the Roomba Plus 505X reaches deeper into corners and along walls, covering 18% more floor area* so spills, crumbs, and sticky spots don’t get left behind. * Compared to standard vacuum & mop mode on coffee and grime.
- THE DOCK THAT HANDLES THE DIRTY WORK. The AutoWash Dock empties debris for up to 75 days and washes, refreshes, and heat‑dries mop pads—so you enjoy up to 4 weeks of hands‑free mopping* with consistently fresh results.
- POWERFUL ENOUGH FOR REAL‑LIFE MESSES. From scattered cereal to muddy pawprints, enjoy confident cleaning with up to 70× stronger suction* paired with dual mop pads, a multi‑surface rubber brush, and edge‑sweeping brush. * As compared to Roomba 600 series robots.
- AVOIDS CORDS, SOCKS—EVEN PET ACCIDENTS. PrecisionVision AI instantly recognizes common household obstacles and steers around them. It also detects wet and dry messes ahead and automatically makes extra passes for a noticeably cleaner result.
- SMARTER NAVIGATION, FEWER WORRIES. ClearView Pro LiDAR maps your home precisely and cleans efficiently day or night, while built‑in cliff sensors help prevent falls near stairs and ledges.
For multi-floor homes
Check the exact model’s map capacity and app behavior: how many maps it can save, how it handles rooms and restricted areas, and whether it identifies the current floor or needs help. Philips lists support for up to five maps for the XU3110/02; that figure applies to that model, not to robot vacuums generally.
For homes with floor clutter
Mapping and obstacle recognition answer different questions. If cables, toys, or pet waste are a concern, seek independent tests that cover the specific objects and conditions in your home. A product page’s general obstacle-avoidance claim does not show how reliably a model handles every object type.
How to interpret suction numbers
Advertised suction figures can help describe models within a product line, but a maximum in pascals (Pa) is not a dependable cross-brand score unless the test methods and results are comparable. A larger advertised number does not by itself establish better pickup on your floors.

Roborock says the Q7 Max Series maximum suction figure is based on manufacturer internal testing under IEC 62885-2:2016 / 5.8, in Max+ mode with a full battery (Roborock Q7 Max Series). That disclosure explains the basis of this manufacturer’s claim; it is not an independent comparison with other brands.
Also compare brush design, hair handling, floor type, cleaning modes, and independent pickup tests. The cited product information does not provide a controlled, comparable performance ranking across the example models.
Check what “mopping” means for carpets
Robot mops use different hardware and workflows. iRobot describes spinning DualClean mop pads and SmartScrub on the Roomba Plus 405; Roborock says the Q7 Max can vacuum and mop at the same time (iRobot Roomba Plus 405; Roborock Q7 Max Series). Those descriptions identify features, not a universal winner for stain removal or floor coverage.

In a mixed-floor home, find out exactly what happens when the robot reaches a rug or carpet while mopping. Does it lift or detach the mop, avoid carpet in mop mode, or require you to mark no-mop areas? Check the model’s instructions for cleaning-solution restrictions and whether pads need manual cleaning. The product descriptions cited here do not establish comparative results for stain removal, edge coverage, carpet protection, or pad wear.

Compare dock tasks, not “self-cleaning” labels
A dock may charge the robot, empty dust, refill water, wash or dry mop pads, or clean a washboard. Those are separate functions; a dock described as automated may still leave regular hands-on work.
For example, iRobot says the Roomba Plus 405 returns to its AutoWash dock to auto-empty debris and wash pads as needed during mopping, then washes and dries the pads after cleaning. This is a product-page feature description, not evidence that the system needs no maintenance.

Before choosing, check which jobs the dock actually automates and account for the space and access it needs. Consider clean- and dirty-water tank handling, dust-bag replacement, noise, and consumables. Consistent comparative figures for dock dimensions, running costs, noise, and reliability are not established by the cited product information.
Check supplies and care instructions for the exact model
Filters, brushes, mop pads, and dust bags are model-specific. Use the owner’s manual for the precise model and market to confirm compatible parts, care instructions, cleaning-solution rules, and replacement guidance.
